CULTURES IN CONFLICT PAPERS (Anthropology)

 
The paper is more like four essay questions. You don’t need an overarching thesis, no introduction, no bibliography. Use the citation format provided in the “Student Guide to Writing the Final Paper” that I will upload it to you. You answer each question separately and then move on. I stated in the Final Paper Assignment from the papers I will proved you “Take the authors and their works one by one and explain why they would respond one way or the other…” I don’t expect you to spend time on authors that aren’t relevant to your answer. If you want, you could begin each answer by saying something like “I think that humans are natural born killers and I will support my position by citing evidence from Bodley 1, Ehrenreich 2, 3 and Ferguson 1. The other articles are not relevant in this case.”

That way you have mentioned the works that are relevant and left aside those that aren’t, something like that. It’s just a suggestion.

A question came up about #4 “Are they more intense today than in the past?” The “they” being referred to are violent conflicts.

Some comments also revolved around the relationship of the questions. Questions 2, 3, and 4 are indeed related. Question 2 is asking for causes of conflicts; question 3 is asking if they are becoming more common; and question 4 is asking if they are becoming more intense, meaning more destructive and more deadly. Keep them separate in your answers, but be aware that the same sources may have things to say that relate to all three questions. I know you will figure it out.

RUBRIC (also to be found in the Final Paper materials module on Canvas)

Some of you have asked for more rubric-like guidelines to the final paper. I am expecting you to write at least a bit more than a page per question. You may of course write more or less than that on any given question, but it should all add up to 4-6 pages. Here is a rubric that if you follow it, you will do just fine on the paper:

Your answers to the questions are clear (Maximum 12 pts)
Your answers are based on evidence taken only from the 6 sources (max 12pts)
You cite from all of the sources that pertain to your answers to the questions (max 20 pts)
The sources of evidence are cited correctly (max 12 pts)
You provide your own position on the questions at the end (max 12 pts)
Your sentences are grammatical and you use correct spelling (max 12 pts)
Total = 80 points

So if you competently perform those six steps as you are writing your paper and checking it over, then you will get a good score. If you do just an adequate job, then you will receive fewer points. Leaving one of the criterion out will cost you more points, and so on.

From previous assignments: Rhetorical Analysis (will upload), you identified different rhetorical devices and strategies employed by authors in 3 different types of sources – a journal article, an online source and a newspaper article. Using this assignment compose a new paragraph in the style of an actual non-academic publication of your choice. Use one of the non-academic publications that were selected in the Rhetorical Analysis assignment.
Your new paragraph will be based on the ideas in your paragraph for the paragraph composition and the paragraph revision assignment (will upload) and will incorporate the research used in those paragraphs.

Include:
-an outline of your new rhetorical situation and context
-The new paragraph
-a brief rhetorical analysis of the selected publication
-a brief discussion of your rhetorical decisions, in light of your new rhetorical situation and context (make comparisons to Paragraph composition/paragraph revision assignments where appropriate)
-Reflection from the point of view of yourself as an expert writer to your novice writer self by considering what you have learnt and how you have evolved as a writer.

“Michael Lynch, The Body Politic, and Queer Activism in Canada, 1970s-1990s”

 
We are living through a period in which LGBTQ
activism is nearly dormant. Apart perhaps from the struggle over same-sex marriage, the queer
movement in North America has been lulled to sleep by the extension of human rights, at least to
certain segments of the community, and by the pacification of queer people in the embrace of
consumer capitalism. This stands in marked contrast to the 1970s through to the mid-1990s when
LGBTQ people, along with feminists, people of colour, and anti-imperialists, were at the
forefront in the struggle for progressive social change. While this was only a few decades ago,
popular memory of what was initially called the gay liberation movement has faded from view.
This assignment is designed to bring the heady days of liberation back to life.
There are two parts to the assignment. The first part is a book critique of AIDS Activist: Michael
Lynch and the Politics of Community (BTL, 2003). The book is essentially a history of gay
liberation in Toronto through the life story of Michael Lynch, one of Canada’s prominent gay
activists, as pieced together by journalist Ann Silversides, using Lynch’s diaries and other
sources. As you know from reading the book, Lynch was the
founder of and/or involved in a wide range of sexual politics
organizations through the 1970s-1990s. Your critique should
address the over-arching themes of the text, such as the differences
between human-rights and liberation approaches to LGBTQ politics,
the potentials and pitfalls of the notion of ‘community,’ ‘identity’
etc. You should also zero in on a specific theme of the book that
interests you the most, such as AIDS activism, movement
journalism, queer parenting, issues of race or gender, etc.; the theme
you select will be crucial for part two of the assignment.
The second part of the assignment involves doing some primary
research in The Body Politic. The Body Politic was Canada’s
premier gay liberation journal. It published from 1971 to 1987, and
Michael Lynch was one of its many frequent
contributors. With your chosen theme in mind, read
through The Body Politic and locate at least three
substantial articles (as opposed to short new items) that
relate to your topic. Incorporate them into your paper by
discussing the ways they support, challenge, or
otherwise modify the topic as presented by
Lynch/Silversides. As a historian, you’ll also want to
include some reflection on the nature of your sources, in
this case, a community- or movement-based journal.
What difference does this make?

Tips:
 The assignment can be completed using just
AIDS Activist and The Body Politic. Of course,
there are secondary sources out there, including
articles on The Body Politic itself, which you are
free to also incorporate in your paper.
 Avoid organizing your paper around the two main parts of the assignment – book critique
followed by discussion of The Body Politic sources. As we’ve discussed before, it’s
always better to aim for a more complex structure in which you integrate the two
different parts throughout your paper and organize it around your own theme/argument.

Closing the Gap in health equality between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians is an agreed national priority.
The nation wants continued focus and action in order to close the unacceptable health and life expectancy gap.
All political parties have committed to end the health equality gap by 2030, supported by almost 200,000 Australians who made the pledge.
Over the five-year period (2005-2007 to 2010-2012), life expectancy is estimated to have increased by 1.6 years for males and by 0.6 of a year for females. But a life expectancy gap of around ten years remains for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people when compared with non-Indigenous people.

The goal of inclusive practice is to be aware of, and responsive to, the needs of all people (De Chesnay, 2005, p. 18), and to provide health care based on the principles of social justice (Royal College of Nursing [RCN], 2008). In this context it means that as health professionals we also work to understand and break down barriers of inequality in access to health care. Our goal is to improve the health of all people, irrespective of their background, culture or beliefs.

1. First collect two current on-line or print news articles on Closing the Gap, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health. Critique each article and discuss how it relates to inclusive practice and equity in health care.

2. Then you are to then critically examine, and provide evidence of the impact of Australian health policy and healthcare practices on health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Specifically you are choose three of the Close the Gap targets and strategies that have been put into place to achieve these targets.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS
When addressing the assignment topic you will need to use contemporary literature (mostly <5 years) to support your discussion.
It is expected that you will write in the third person, read widely around the topic and correctly reference your paper using the APA 6th edition referencing style.
Please note: referencing constitutes 15% of the overall grade for this assessment.

A 2000 word limit has been set for this assignment. A 10% leeway on either side of the word limit will be accepted. Word count will be measured from the first word of the introduction to the last word of the conclusion and include in-text referencing. Not included in the word count are the contents page and reference list.

To help scaffold your assessment you should allow approximately 10% (150-200 words) each for the introduction and conclusion, 200 words each for the news articles, which leaves 1200 words for the body.

Both news articles must be attached as appendices to your assignment.

Democracy and democratization: The relationships between political institutions and other social phenomena

 
Research question:
Political institutions are key factors which distinguish varieties of political regimes (democracies and non-democracies) as well as subvarieties of democratic and nondemocratic regimes. These regime varieties (and their transformations) are both affected by and have consequences for other political, socio-economic, international and cultural phenomena. Discuss a variety of key relationships between political institutions and these other social phenomena, both with respect to institutions as the dependent variable as well as with respect to institutions as the independent variable. In addition to course literature which emphasizes theory, a wide variety of course readings which present single- as well as comparative-country case studies must be utilized. The latter can provide real-world illustrations as well as serve as sources of historical and numerical data.
