Students will locate and summarize 10 media reports (published between
January 13 and April
14) focusing on a theme from a textbook chapter, or more specifically,
a key term from a specific
chapter. For example, “redistricting” will be a major topic in 2011
and a student could find a recent
report on the topic during the week we read about Congress or
elections. For each report, students
should identify the article title, source (publication name or
website), author, and date. Reports should
come primarily from newspapers, magazines, political websites, cable
news reports (online video),
and political podcasts (if applicable). For those unfamiliar with
political news sources, Google News
may be a useful tool—or the list of sources on the instructor’s website under
NEWS/POLITICS/GOV’T. The summaries for each report should be a
one-paragraph description of
the article—there should be no analytical writing or personal
reflection in this portion of the

summaries, students will write two
pages analyzing the media coverage. The analysis should discuss the
overall character of the media
reports using course concepts from the chapter on media and politics
for the basis of the analysis.
Students may also consider whether or not media reports were
informative, if the student detected
any bias, whether coverage was overly focused on politics/elections
(rather than policy or educating
the public), the student’s own biases in relation to the coverage, and
any other important

Scenario:
You are the newly promoted Manufacturing Coordinator, reporting
directly to the Director of Operations at Universal Products,
International (UPI) a medium sized manufacturer of high-end consumer
electronics components. You have several years of increasing
responsibility in UPI, working your way up from a production team
member to this new position with supervisory responsibilities. You
have spent several years as a member of an Organizational Culture (OC)
team that has reviewed organizational issues. This is a team composed
of volunteers from across the company. This group makes
recommendations for improvements that address employee morale and
safety. Membership on the OC is for two years. Your term expired last

You have been taking courses at CTU for the past few years and are

The company is anticipating adding another 150 employees and opening a
new production facility across town on a parcel of land that UPI

serve on a project staff team that was formed to work out the changes
that will be necessary as the new plant comes online. Other project
staff will include your peers in other departments. This project team
must be up and ready to make recommendations on changes within the
next 90 days in preparation for how the two plant facilities will

Your assignment is to be prepared as a research based “Business Proposal” aimed at influencing business stakeholders to take specific actions based on your recommendations. • Quality of the analysis for the client company, does it touch base on all potential areas. Is it focused on areas with biggest impact?
• Risk, limitations, timeframes and return on investment (approximate)
• Synergies between the recommendations – are the interdependent or independent initiatives? Order of application?
• Creativity, plausibility and appropriateness of the recommendations

In 2006, 59% of the hospitals in the US were nonprofit. As you learned
in the GAO report on nonprofit hospitals, to maintain this tax-exempt
status, a hospital must provide benefit to the community, but there is
some latitude by the IRS and other governmental agencies about what
qualifies as community benefit.

In this Discussion, you will analyze the extent to which a nonprofit
hospital is legally and ethically responsible to provide community
benefit, using the ACHE decision-making model to guide your analysis
of the following scenario:

The management team of Memorial Medical Center must make a decision
regarding the continuation of one of its outpatient clinics. To
provide better community service, MMC developed three outpatient
clinics throughout a large metropolitan area. Over the past several
years, one of the clinics has consistently been a financial loser. The
losses have grown even as the costs of maintaining the clinic have
increased. A primary reason for the negative financial performance is
the high amount of non-reimbursed healthcare services—the clinic
