Media Journal

-The American Government.
Students will locate and summarize 10 media reports (published between
January 13 and April
14) focusing on a theme from a textbook chapter, or more specifically,
a key term from a specific
chapter. For example, “redistricting” will be a major topic in 2011
and a student could find a recent
report on the topic during the week we read about Congress or
elections. For each report, students
should identify the article title, source (publication name or
website), author, and date. Reports should
come primarily from newspapers, magazines, political websites, cable
news reports (online video),
and political podcasts (if applicable). For those unfamiliar with
political news sources, Google News
may be a useful tool—or the list of sources on the instructor’s website under
NEWS/POLITICS/GOV’T. The summaries for each report should be a
one-paragraph description of
the article—there should be no analytical writing or personal
reflection in this portion of the
assignment, only a description of the article. At the end of the 10
summaries, students will write two
pages analyzing the media coverage. The analysis should discuss the
overall character of the media
reports using course concepts from the chapter on media and politics
for the basis of the analysis.
Students may also consider whether or not media reports were
informative, if the student detected
any bias, whether coverage was overly focused on politics/elections
(rather than policy or educating
the public), the student’s own biases in relation to the coverage, and
any other important
characteristics the student notices.

-each media report has to be about one of these chapters or key terms
1: Perspectives on American Government .
2: The Founding and the Constitution.
3: Federalism.
4: Civil Liberties.
5: Congress.
6: The Presidency.
7: The Federal Bureaucracy.
8: Voting and Participation.
9: Campaign and Elections.
10: The Media and Politics.

Innovation

A former colleague calls you, and he sounds very frustrated. Once
again, senior leadership has proclaimed itself the followers of the
latest management fad and expects the entire organization to
immediately shift direction. You shake your head. You know that
organizations in today’s global marketplace are faced with a constant
need to understand the forces affecting them and adapt accordingly.
Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write up to 3
paragraphs that respond to the following questions with your thoughts,
ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future
discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use
examples to reinforce your ideas:
Reflect on the following statement:
Organizations need to adapt to innovative techniques while avoiding
the pitfall of adopting unproven methods and/or fads that may not fit
with the culture of the organizations.
• What would you say to your former colleague?
• Are these two forces mutually exclusive, or do you perceive a
balance that can be struck between change and stability? Provide a
detailed example that will support your position.
• What examples can you give of preparing and managing potential
conflicts that result from change?
• How does organizational structure impact an organization’s ability
to innovate successfully?

Innovation (phase 2 DB 2) org

Scenario:
You are the newly promoted Manufacturing Coordinator, reporting
directly to the Director of Operations at Universal Products,
International (UPI) a medium sized manufacturer of high-end consumer
electronics components. You have several years of increasing
responsibility in UPI, working your way up from a production team
member to this new position with supervisory responsibilities. You
have spent several years as a member of an Organizational Culture (OC)
team that has reviewed organizational issues. This is a team composed
of volunteers from across the company. This group makes
recommendations for improvements that address employee morale and
safety. Membership on the OC is for two years. Your term expired last
year and you have been looking for ways to continue to contribute to
improving the organizational culture.
You have been taking courses at CTU for the past few years and are
nearing your degree completion. You have studied leadership, finance,
accounting and other business administration courses that provide you
with a working understanding of UPI structure and the core business
competencies of the company. You applied for your new position and
were promoted to help move the organization toward a more
collaborative and participative culture. Your new supervisor is
responsible for all manufacturing related departments. He reports to
the VP of Operations and her area of responsibility is all company
operations. Her peers are the Vice Presidents of Finance, IT, HR,
Marketing, and Supply Chain Management. They all report to the company
President.
The company has grown from 50 employees to over 300 hundred in the
past four years. You have been part of this dramatic growth and have
watched the company struggle with changes in reporting relationships,
additions of new layers of management and adding several new product
lines. UPI is poised for another large growth with the development of
a new electronic component that will make portable video players more
efficient.
The company is anticipating adding another 150 employees and opening a
new production facility across town on a parcel of land that UPI
recently purchased. This will mean that your department will have
employees in two locations for the first time.
In addition to your regular tasks, your supervisor has asked you to
serve on a project staff team that was formed to work out the changes
that will be necessary as the new plant comes online. Other project
staff will include your peers in other departments. This project team
must be up and ready to make recommendations on changes within the
next 90 days in preparation for how the two plant facilities will
interact. In addition, this team can expect that the directors will
routinely delegate other new projects and initiatives to discuss and
submit recommendations.
You also will maintain your new responsibilities for a staff of 8
employees who coordinate production scheduling and coordinate with the
two HR generalists that are physically located in the operations
department but report to the HR department.
To be successful in this new assignment, you will need to apply what
you know about organizations, their structures, change management, and
how individuals work within organizations.

Company knowledge Assessment Report Intel

Research challenge: Investigate the knowledge capabilities of your allocated company, describe their strengths and propose strategic (knowledge based) initiatives to improve their performance.
Your Collaborative Learning Network (CLN), is to act as a consulting organisation asked to improve the performance of the company through the improvement of how knowledge is developed and applied in the organisation. This assignment requires this group to write a 2500 word (+/- 10%) business proposal highlighting 3-5 recommendations for enhancing the knowledge initiatives currently in place by the organisation, explain how these recommendations will generate a return on investment and enhance business performance (including both tangible and intangible benefits). Although written in business report format, this intention of this exercise is to link theory to practice, so standard referencing is required in Harvard format to enhance the robustness and credibility of the proposal.

Your CLN team will complete the report on the company page in the wiki. Assess how the organization approaches knowledge management and what strategies they have for the creation, capture, transfer and reuse of knowledge to drive competitive advantage, innovation, improvement and sustainability. Students should note that the introduction brief provided is NOT in sufficient detail to complete this assignment to a professional standard. There is sufficient other information available through public sources to make beneficial recommendations.

Your assignment is to be prepared as a research based “Business Proposal” aimed at influencing business stakeholders to take specific actions based on your recommendations. The content of this research will also be used in Assignment 3 where the same CLN group will present their findings to the lecturer (acting as the CEO) and the rest of the class (role playing as the company’s board of management).

The final wiki content must be posted into TurnItIn no later than the assignment deadline. A cover page signed by all group members must be given to the lecturer on or before the due date.

Note: Executives read Executive Summaries to decide if they should read more. If interested, they will look at Recommendations and Conclusions (for more details on value-at-stake and ROI) and Introduction (for background). Proposals which have not impressed executives by scanning there sections don’t get read or funded. It is important to ensure your proposals are impressive throughout, but recommendations, conclusions and Executive Summary are critical!

Considerations for the report:
• Focus on the recommendations (the board know who they are, they do not need a long history of the organisation, expect where the details are directly relevant to the recommendations)
• Be clear about the order of the recommendations (all at once, some before others, timeframes and ROI)
• The extent to which the presentation reflects an innovative way of sharing knowledge for the organisation and the size/difficulty of the change
• Quality of the analysis for the client company, does it touch base on all potential areas. Is it focused on areas with biggest impact?
• Risk, limitations, timeframes and return on investment (approximate)
• Synergies between the recommendations – are the interdependent or independent initiatives? Order of application?
• Creativity, plausibility and appropriateness of the recommendations

Responsibilities of Non-profit Healthcare Organizations

In 2006, 59% of the hospitals in the US were nonprofit. As you learned
in the GAO report on nonprofit hospitals, to maintain this tax-exempt
status, a hospital must provide benefit to the community, but there is
some latitude by the IRS and other governmental agencies about what
qualifies as community benefit.

In this Discussion, you will analyze the extent to which a nonprofit
hospital is legally and ethically responsible to provide community
benefit, using the ACHE decision-making model to guide your analysis
of the following scenario:

The management team of Memorial Medical Center must make a decision
regarding the continuation of one of its outpatient clinics. To
provide better community service, MMC developed three outpatient
clinics throughout a large metropolitan area. Over the past several
years, one of the clinics has consistently been a financial loser. The
losses have grown even as the costs of maintaining the clinic have
increased. A primary reason for the negative financial performance is
the high amount of non-reimbursed healthcare services—the clinic
provides needed health care to a low-income part of the metropolitan
area. Several members of the executive management team believe MMC has
no alternative other than closing the clinic. One member of the
management team, however, believes that the situation raises ethical
concerns, and that the executive team seeks an ethics-grounded
response to the problem. (Nelson, p. 9)

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the GAO report (http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d08880.pdf),
paying particular attention to its discussion about criteria for
nonprofit status.

Review the article “An Organizational Ethics Decision-Making Process,”
and apply the steps of the decision-making model to this scenario,
going into more detailed analysis than is already provided in the
article. What options does this hospital have? Clarify your ethical
reasoning for each option.(Article: Nelson, W. A. (2005). An
organizational ethics decision-making process. Healthcare Executive,
20(4), 8–14. Retrieved from
http://ezp.waldenulibrary.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=buh&AN=17407169&site=ehost-live&scope=site)

If you were an administrator at MMC, what decision would you make?

Post by Day 3 a response to the following:

Are the clinics helping MMC maintain its tax-exempt status? In what respect?

What are some of the options for MMC in this scenario? Which option do
you think MMC should choose? What is the ethical reasoning that leads
you to this conclusion?

Discuss the ethical obligations of nonprofit hospitals, in general, to
benefit the community. Is it acceptable, do you think, for a hospital
to do the bare minimum to maintain its tax-exempt status? Explain your
reasoning.

The controversial Nature of the Rosenberg Case

Explain the controversial nature of the Rosenberg Case using the
perspectives of Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Mohandas Gandhi, Simone de
Beauvoir, and W.E.B. DuBois. How and why did Beauvoir and DuBois
object to the Rosenberg indictments and executions? What positions
would Marx, Freud, and Gandhi have taken?

Please use exact page numbers, quotes, and phrases of the sources that
you will use for the essay, and especially, I want you to use Karl
Marx’s Communist Manifesto, and Freud’s Civilization and Its
Discontents, and Dubois and Beuvoirs’ works that have relationship to
the Rosenberg Case. Please use all books listed above, and if needed,
you can use some sources from internet.

Lastly, I want you to change the topic of the essay based on the
content, not necessarily “The controversial nature of the Rosenberg
Case.”
