Case Study 1: Vicky returns to exercise and sport
Vicky is a 40-year-old teacher. She is married and has two young children.
At a routine health check, the GP informed Vicky that she has high blood pressure and suggested that she is a little overweight. When she was younger, Vicky played badminton and she wants to play again.
The GP suggested that Vicky should start a fitness and weight loss programme. Vicky joined a local gym and planned to go there three times a week. At the beginning, she would go straight to the gym after work. She liked the buzz of the gym, but ached from the new exercises and was getting home late in the evenings. Then, in the fourth week, after a few nights of working late, she was feeling so tired that she stopped going to the gym.
Vicky’s husband is worried about her poor health and is making healthier meals at home and encouraging Vicky to get back to her fitness programme. Vicky’s work colleagues have organised a friendly badminton league and are pushing Vicky to join. The club will start in three months’ time and Vicky is keen to get her fitness level up and her weight down in order to get back into the sport that she loves.
Vicky goes back to the gym and enrols on a six-week ‘fitness start-up’ programme with a personal trainer who helps her to set fitness goals and designs a progressive exercise programme for her. Vicky’s personal trainer works with her once a week at the gym, guiding her through her programme and setting her exercises to work through on a twice-a-week basis. This time, Vicky enjoys her experience at the gym more. She attends all six sessions with the personal trainer, but struggles to maintain the other twice-a-week sessions. To replace these, she walks to work and back twice a week instead of driving (the walk is 25 minutes each way). In addition to this, at weekends she has started going out on her bike with her sons and husband.
By the eighth week Vicky is feeling more energetic. Her husband and her colleagues at work have commented that she seems to have lost weight and looks better.
Questions
a. Identify three barriers that may affect Vicky’s ability to ‘adhere’ to sport and fitness activities. (50 words/6 marks)
b. Describe why models of behaviour change may be useful to sport and fitness practitioners. (100 words/8 marks)
c. Apply the transtheoretical model of behaviour change to explain how Vicky was moving between the stages. (350 words/16 marks)
d.By the eighth week, Vicky appears to be in the action stage of the transtheoretical model. What psychological techniques could be used to help her to move into the maintenance stage? (500 words/25 marks)

Case Problem ‘Bicycle Shop’

Jerry Smith is thinking about opening a bicycle shop in his hometown. Jerry loves to take his own bike on 50-mile trip with his friends, but he believes that any small business should be started only if there is a good chance of making a profit. Jerry can open a small shop, a large shop, or no shop at all. The profits will depend on the size of the shop and whether the market is favorable or unfavorable for his products. Because there will be a 5-year lease on the building that Jerry is thinking about using, he wants to make sure that he makes the correct decision. Jerry is also thinking about hiring his old marketing professor to conduct a marketing research study. If the study is conducted, the study could be favorable (i.e., producing a favorable market) or unfavorable (i.e., producing an unfavorable market).
Jerry Smith has done some analysis about the profitability of the bicycle shop. If Jerry build the large bicycle shop, he will earn $60,000 if the market is favorable, but he will lose $40,000 if the market is unfavorable. The small shop will return a $30,000 profit in a favorable market and a $10,000 loss in an unfavorable market. At the present time, he believes that there is 50-50 chance that the market will be favorable. His old marketing professor will charge $5,000 for the marketing researching. It is estimated that there is a 0.6 probability that the survey will be favorable. Furthermore, there is a 0.9 probability that the market will be favorable given a favorable outcome from the study. However, the marketing professor has warned Jerry that there is only a probability of 0.12 of a favorable market if the marketing research results are not favorable.
Prepare a Managerial Report structured as follows:
2.1 Structure and present your paper in the form of a Managerial Report, with a cover page, table of content, executive summary, main body, appendixes.
2.2 Prepare a payoff table and develop a decision tree.
2.3 Based on the calculated EMVs for all decision alternatives, answer the question: ‘Should Jerry conduct and use the marketing research?’
2.4 Jerry is unsure the 0.6 probability of a favorable marketing research study is correct. How sensitive is Jerry’s decision to this probability value? How far can this probability value deviate from 0.6 without causing Jerry to change his decision?
2.5 Using the results from the sensitivity analysis (task 4), prepare a sensitivity diagram.
2.6 Apply software tools for the decision tree (recommended tool: MS Excel Add-Ins TreePlan)

Port authorities

I have included an abstract to be used as a template for this paper.

Please include a pre and post 9/11 discussion on port authority security.

and a discussion that includes the maritime security act of 2002.

Port Authority
“ It is one of the most heavily-guarded checkpoints on the border between Israel and the Gaza strip. Security is so tight at Karni that goods are transferred from trucks parked back-to-back to prevent smuggling. But despite those precautions, a truck carrying two suicide bombers left the border crossing into Israel at about 2 o’clock in the afternoon of March 14 headed for the deepwater port of Ashdod, about 40 kilometers south of Tel Aviv. By 3:30 pm, the truck had arrived at the port, one of Israel’s busiest. About an hour later, the terrorists detonated their explosive devices, killing ten and wounding 18.”(Schoen, MSNBC)
The excerpt above is from an article written by John Schoen of MSNBC in which he describes how ports are attractive targets for terrorism. In the article, he provides a very detailed account of how a heavily guarded port in Israel, one of the safest ports in the world, was compromised by two suicide bombers. With this paper, I intend to discuss the purpose of ports, daily port operations, port security, and ports areas of vulnerability. Next, I intend to show the financial impact if a port is shut down. I found this topic intriguing because if a terrorist act could be successfully launched at a heavily guarded port in Israel, then it is imperative that ports around the world use this situation as a learning tool to prevent it from occurring again. While there are over 100 ports within the United States alone, my paper will on how port address security to deter and identify terrorist activity. Finally, the paper will conclude with an assessment of the security of US Ports.

Literature review

A review of the literature is a paper that is intended to provide evidence of knowledge in a given area of study. The review of the literature for this course will incorporate the literature you included in your Annotated Bibliography earlier this semester. Your review of the literature will include a description of your view of nursing knowledge and how you view nursing science and practice (your philosophy based on what you learned from this course and from your practice). How does this personal philosophy inform how you view the two concepts you selected for your annotated bibliography? How do your views fit within the metaparadigm of nursing? Your review of the literature is expected to describe fully the two concepts you selected by discussing relevant works, by drawing logical connections between and among findings in the literature, the concepts themselves, your selected theory, and your own thinking as it develops in relation to these concepts.
An introduction: At least one paragraph that introduces the topic of your review. The introduction should capture the reader’s attention and peak the reader’s interest. You must include a thesis statement in your introduction.

Background information: The background section provides an important foundation that helps to argue the importance of conducting your review. Here you include the theoretical foundation for your review, which includes your personal philosophy based on the evidence and your own practice. Provide a definition of the concepts. You will also introduce and describe your selected theory to which you apply your selected concepts.
Results: Your results should include a synthesis of the literature making clear connections between the literature and the two concepts you selected. How do your concepts fit with the theory you selected and how does the literature support these connections? You must also demonstrate evidence of critiquing the literature to identify strengths and weaknesses in the literature included. Identify any gaps in the literature that indicate that additional research is needed.
Implications for nursing practice: You must include pertinent and relevant implications derived from your review that would be useful to nurses in advanced practice.
Conclusion: Provide a concise, but thorough summary of the important findings from your review of the literature; include highlights from the implications and suggest possible areas for future research in this area.
Your paper must be in APA format, which requires both a title and a reference page.

Assignment

Assignment 5 asks that you analyze what you’ve done so far. So a rubric isn’t a lot of help. Include what you think! You need to tell me here.

a) what you would have done differently in retrospect (what were you thinking when you focused on those hippos?);

b) what you’d have done differently if you were really going to do the research (maybe picked a topic that would carry you through field?);

c) what you think might have been better (and don’t spend a lot of time in this area telling me the assignments are too close together. Pink hippos are a better subject!);

d) what you thought you’d learn in this class, but didn’t.

This class is tough, because many of you have taken a research class, just not a social work one, so you as a sub-group get kind of antsy at its basic-ness. Those who haven’t get antsy at its complexity. So switching your thinking to how social workers think is probably its main purpose.
