Project A Case study

Project A: Using Probabilities to Make Decisions (Unit 2)

♥ Heart Scenario: Good economy

Data

A financial planning firm has a decision to make.  The company can buy more stocks (B) now, not buy and not sell stock (N) now, or it can sell its stock (S) now.

The following is from the Google Dictionary:

Bear Market:  a market in which prices are falling, encouraging selling.

Bull Market: a market in which share prices are rising, encouraging buying.

The future market will be either Bear (E) or Bull (U).

The following is a payoff table, in thousands of dollars, of profit or loss for this firm based on the decision the firm makes now and the future market.

E U
B 44 -29
N 24 -11
S 18 4

The statisticians of the company, using their standard budget, predict the following probabilities:

P(E) = 0.5                                             P(U) = Complement

The statisticians report that if the company is charged and additional $5,000 above the standard fee, they can do more accurate research to obtain sample information that will either be Favorable (F) or Unfavorable (X) with the following probabilities:

P(F) = 0.5                                             P(X) = Complement

If the research is favorable, the revised probabilities are:

P(E) = 0.85                                           P(U) =  Complement

If the research is unfavorable, the revised probabilities are:

P(E) = 0.22                                P(U) = Complement

Assignment

Do all calculations, including making the decision tree and any algebra, in Excel; organize it and highlight important boxes in colors so that it can be read and understood very easily.  Put question numbers next to the answers. You may want to use multiple sheets, but please use only one file. Write out all answers, including #15 and #21 in Excel. For all algebra, show work [the written steps you went through to find the answer] and type that into Excel.  Do not submit the paper you may have used to solve the algebra, just copy it and put it all in Excel.

Very Important:  Input the data only once.  After that, link all calculations from new cells to previous cells, as illustrated in of the videos.  Answers to questions that have the right number but are not linked will be marked incorrect.  Projects that do not link cells will receive a very low grade.

Please complete the following in Excel, highlighting the answers.

Find the following:          [The number in the brackets is how many points each question is worth.]

  • The decision using the optimistic approach. [2]
  • The decision using the conservative approach. [2]
  • The decision using the minimax regret approach. [2]
  • The decision using the Expected Opportunity Loss (EOL) [2]
  • EV(B) [1]
  • EV(N) [1]
  • EV(S) [1]
  • Best EMV = The decision using EV [1]
  • EVwPI [1]
  • EVPI [1]

For #11 and #12: make three comparisons, EV(B) to EV(N), EV(B) to EV(S), EV(N) to EV(S).  You will have three cutoff points and four test points.

  • The value of probability (p) of E that is the cut off for changing the best decision. [4]
  • Draw a number line for #11. [4] (sensitivity analysis)
  • The value for which the payoff of E of the best decision must be greater than to keep the best decision the same. [4] (sensitivity analysis)
  • The value for which the payoff of U of the best decision must be greater than to keep the best decision the same. [4] (sensitivity analysis)
  • Rank p, payoff of E, and payoff of U from least to most sensitive and explain why. Make sure to rank them and explain why you have chosen your order. [2]
  • The decision tree [6]
  • EVwSI [1]
  • EVSI [1]
  • Efficiency of the Sample Information [2]
  • The Risk Profile [4]
  • Based on the cost of obtaining the sample information and its efficiency, is it worth obtaining it? Why? Please include ALL the relevant information for this decision and use specific numbers.   Your answer must discuss EVSI, net EVSI (The EVSI minus the cost of the SI), the Efficiency of the Sample Information (abbreviated “E”) and the Risk Profile. This is the most important question in the project, as you are making the decision to purchase the SI using all you have learned.  Answers that do not include all this will not get credit. [4]P(5.u)

Nurse/Patient Empowerment

Nurse/Patient Empowerment
As a nurse, you are the individual who has the ability to empower patients in the decision-making process pertaining to their health care. In addition, you

are in a unique position to empower your nursing colleagues to improve job satisfaction and use performance indicator data from dashboards to effect social

change.

For this Discussion, you will analyze the use of quality improvement data and discuss how this data can help empower both patients and nurses.

Respond to the following:
•What are the best strategies the nurse can employ to empower patients and support patients’ rights to improve quality of care? (Some considerations to

keep in mind may include: providing information on effectiveness, risks, and benefits of alternative treatments.)
•In what ways can NDNQI data from dashboards or quality improvement data be used to support nurse empowerment in practice?
•How has your institution empowered the nursing staff through the use of quality improvement data?
•Provide an example of how you have personally empowered either a patient or a fellow nurse.

Essay guideline

  1. The discussion should be supported by relevant literature (peer reviewed) and health statistics.
  2. essay should have an introduction and a conclusion.
  3. NOT to use Wikipedia to support the discussion. Essays that do not just rely on the statistics presented in the Literature will attract higher marks.

What is a peered reviewed reference?

Peer–reviewed articles/ references have been evaluated/edited by several researchers or subject specialist in the academic community prior to accepting it for publication. Also known as scholarly or refereed. Verify that a journal is peer reviewed (refereed) by looking up the journal title in Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory

You must ONLY use edited or peered reviewed sources.

Public Health

We will complete TWO matrices this semester.  One 10 EPHS Matrix will be completed while watching “The Most Dangerous Woman in America” and used in class during discussion of the video.  Here is a link to the video on YouTube:

. What does it mean to see like an economist, both for Smith and for Becker

This reading review is positioned along two axes and pushes you to consider two disciplines distinctly as well as together. please address the following questions:

Both Smith and Becker present the general notions of what it means to look at society as an economist. What does it mean to see like an economist, both for Smith and for Becker? Make sure to attenuate to where they overlap and where they differ.
Alongside this, the readings by Weber and Schmitt present the idea of what politics, the state, and doing politics are. How do they present the political? Make sure to note convergence and divergence.
Finally, what, if any, connects do you find between an economic and a political view of the world?

strategies and interventions

Read the following scenario:
Imagine that, for about a year, your nursing unit has been involved in an intensive campaign to improve patient satisfaction scores with pain

management. You are getting good data from your patients, as the length of stay on this inpatient geriatric medical nursing unit is only about

6 days. Your hospital does 100% survey to inpatients, and the response rate is about 25%, which is higher than it has been. This

notwithstanding, the percent of “patient very satisfied” (top box), with a score of 5, has been in the low 70s. The national benchmark for

medical surgical units like yours is about 85% very satisfied. Of all the units in your hospital, your unit is the lowest scoring on this

HCAPHS survey. But as your unit is the only geriatric medical nursing unit in the hospital, you’d always thought it was the nature of the

patient population.
You have been the day shift representative to the QI team, and the scores on your unit are posted monthly. Here are the numerous strategies

that have been tried on your unit and the timeframes.
Document: Strategies and Interventions (PDF)
For this Discussion, examine the strategies and interventions tried in your unit and consider the following questions: a) Were the strategies

effective in creating a sustainable change on your nursing unit, and b) To what extent can your nurse manager and CNO count on your unit

exceeding the national benchmark in the next quarter, the next year? That is, does this run chart have some predictive ability? Does the run

chart support the nursing unit’s decision to celebrate? To what extent can the leadership be confident that the trend will continue?

Based on the scenario, explain what was done successfully and where improvement was needed in the quality improvement process. Identify the

performance improvement tools, and explain how they contributed to the outcome.
Support your response with references from the Learning Resources and professional nursing literature. Your posts need to be written at the

capstone level (see checklist).
Notes Initial Post: This should be a 3-paragraph (at least 250–350 words) response.
Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old).

Technical efficiency of insurance companies in saudi arabia

(4. Methodological Frameworks
4.1. Measurement of Technical, Pure Technical, and Scale Efficiencies: CCR and BCC DEA models
As noted above, we intend to apply the technique of DEA for computing the measures of technical, pure technical, and scale efficiencies for individual PSBs. In general, DEA is referred to as a linear programming technique that converts multiple incommensurable inputs and outputs of each decision making unit (DMU) into a scalar measure of operational efficiency, relative to its competing DMUs. DEA identifies ‘peer’ DMUs for an individual DMU and then estimates the efficiency of the DMU by comparing its performance with that of the best practice DMUs chosen from its peers. Note that the idea here of best practice is not some theoretical and possibly unattainable concept, but the DMU(s) performing best amongst its (their) peers, which is assigned an efficiency score of 1. These units constitute the referrals ‘standards’ and ‘envelop’ the other units and, thus, form the efficient frontier. DEA involves solving a linear programming problem for each DMU. The solution to the linear programming problem consists of information about the peers of the DMU and the efficiency of the DMU relative to its peer group.
In DEA, technical efficiency (TE) can be viewed from two perspectives. First, input- oriented TE focuses on the possibility of reducing inputs to produce given output levels. Second, output-oriented TE considers the possible expansion in outputs for a given set of input quantities. A measure of TE for a DMU o can be defined as
Page | 42 EJBE 2008, 1(2)
An Examination of Technical, Pure Technical, and Scale Efficiencies in Indian …..
θ output = Actual output / Maximum possible output in output-oriented context, ooo
or θ input = Minimum possible input / Actual input in input-oriented context. To ooo
quantify a measure of TE, we need to find out the divergence between actual production and production on the boundary of the feasible production set. This set summarizes all technological possibilities of transforming inputs into outputs that are available to the organization. A DMU is technically inefficient if production occurs within the interior of this production set. A measure of scale efficiency (SE) can be obtained by comparing TE measures derived under the assumptions of constant returns-to-scale (CRS) and variable returns-to-scale (VRS). As noted above, the TE measure corresponding to CRS assumption represents overall technical efficiency (OTE) which measures inefficiencies due to the input/output configuration and as well as the size of operations. The efficiency measure corresponding to VRS assumption represents pure technical efficiency (PTE) which measures inefficiencies due to only managerial underperformance. The relationship SE = OTE / PTE provides a measure of scale efficiency. For the one- output and one-input case, the derivation of the concepts of technical, pure technical, and scale efficiency under DEA approach is illustrated in Figure 2.
