Saddam Husein’s death penalty,

Write about his execution, trial, his cruelty on Iraqi people and how bad he influenced the world. As a result he was executed.

– Please, one source must be this: http://www.orwell.ru/library/articles/hanging/english/e_hanging

I. CASE STUDY:
During the semester we have covered or will cover a broad range of topics with significant practical implications (e.g. the issues of free will, egoism, the justification of the state, freedom of speech, sexual morality, issues of punishment and the death penalty). Reading or discussing some of the texts you might have felt that the text was instrumental to understand some historical, political event or legal case. Or some of the texts might have evoked your curiosity. Choose such a case and analyze it from a philosophical viewpoint. Or, you can use your case to demonstrate the shortcomings of a philosophical theory. You MUST use some of the philosophical texts you have read during the semester! Use your case either to verify or criticize this philosophical viewpoint.

Formal requirements:
?IMPORTANT: What I am really looking forward to in these essays is the use of what you learned in this class. Use one of the theories we discussed for your analysis. Be specific! Find the important details of the case/literary work you are discussing and connect them to specific elements of the philosophical theory/framework you are using!
?Your essay should be about 4-5 double spaced pages, typed with 12 point characters, having 1? margin all about (these are just general guidelines)
?There is no penalty for length per se, but papers exceeding 7 double-spaced pages of text (about 2100 words) will be penalized, if they could have been shortened by careful editing. (Footnotes may appear on a separate page.)
?Give a title to your essay on its first page. Make clear in the heading of your paper the topic you selected.
?I do expect you to consult some SECONDARY SOURCES on your selected case study or the literary work you chose but you should also concentrate on the texts you read for the classes!
?CITE FULLY AND ACCURATELY. Make sure you accurately state the position of any author you discuss. Any time you quote an author or attribute a proposition to an author, the quotation or attribution must be supported by a citation to the text, with page numbers. YOU MAY NOT
?CITE ME AS AN AUTHORITY ON WHAT AN AUTHOR SAYS (only exception: if you explicitly disagree with what I said in class). YOU MUST CITE THE AUTHOR HIMSELF.
Where the reference is to a text in the assigned readings, it is sufficient to provide page references in parentheses immediately after the quotation or attribution. In all other cases, provide a full bibliographic reference in a footnote or endnote. The page limit on the paper applies to the text of the paper only. Footnotes are free.
?TO SHOW THAT YOU UNDERSTAND AN AUTHOR’S POSITION, IT IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO SIMPLY PARROT THE AUTHOR. Where you quote the author, make sure you explain in your own words the significance of the quoted material. It is often helpful to use your own examples to clarify the views of the author you are discussing.
?CAREFULLY DISTINGUISH VIEWS THAT YOU CLAIM AN AUTHOR HOLDS FROM VIEWS THAT YOU CLAIM THE AUTHOR SHOULD HOLD OR IS COMMITTED TO HOLDING. Claims that an author holds a particular view must be supported with cites to the text. But claims that an author should hold or is committed to holding a particular view must be supported with relevant arguments, in addition to cites to the text.
?CRITICAL EVALUATION. In your paper, you must critically evaluate the positions taken by authors you discuss?that is, you must take your own stand on which side is, on balance, the most reasonable position to take, and explain why you think so.

EVALUATION
Evaluating your essay I will consider the followings:
– Your selection of topic, participation at the scheduled conference
– A clear presentation of your position (?central thesis?).
– The arguments you present to support your position/thesis.
– Documentation of your research, your sources and having a proper bibliography
– The insight, originality and the substantiality of your essay (or the lack of them)
– The structure of your essay.
– Style and grammar.

Ethics, Sustainability and Culture

Length: 3000 words
Task
This essay has three parts. Complete all three parts – i.e. Part (a), Part (b), and Part (c).

Part (a)

Read the following case study. Explain why it can be considered to raise ethical issues.

Trouble at Mill
Robert is the Human Resources Manager for a mill in a rural town that is a part of a large foreign owned multi-national cereals company. As Human Resources Manager, Robert has been involved in discussions with the corporate senior management. At these meetings he was asked to report on all human resource aspects of the mill?s operations. Subsequent to this meeting, he was advised that the mill would be closed down within a year because it was old and surplus to the company?s needs. In order to avoid industrial action and a community backlash, he was asked not to discuss this possibility with anyone else in the mill – including other managers all of whom believe the mill is in for a period of sustained growth. Finally, he was advised that there was a vacancy for a senior HR professional coming up at the company?s head office. He was strongly encouraged to apply for this position. Shortly after these meetings, the mill store-person resigned. The store-person?s position at the mill is vital to the efficient operation of the company: the job involves checking stores in and out and maintaining a sophisticated inventory system. It is a skilled position that requires someone with long experience in the field. The job has always been full-time and union covered. Following job vacancy advertisements and culling, Robert, along with the Mill Production Manager, interviewed 5 applicants for the job. All had good credentials; however, one (James) had significantly more experience and relevant skills having worked two jobs previously with an identical inventory system. This applicant also came across confidently in the interview and was by far and away the most suitable for the job.
However, at the conclusion of the interview Robert asked the applicant whether he had any questions. James replied:
?Yes thank you. I was retrenched from my last two jobs because of company restructures. In fact, as you would know from my application, I was only in my last job for 6 months before I was retrenched: being one of the last on meant I was one of the first off. I cannot afford to be retrenched anymore. I am looking for a secure and interesting position that allows my wife and I to buy a house and remain in the local area with our children. The job you are offering certainly appears to be interesting, but can you tell me how secure it is? If I take this job is there any risk that I might be retrenched within the next 12 months or so? Are you aware of any plans to close the plant??

Part (b)
Using the material in the text, notes, readings and other sources;
(i) Describe the main characteristics of Ethical Egoism and Utilitarianism,
(ii) Critically discuss how each of these approaches could be applied to the case referred to in Part (a).

Part (c)
Indicate which of the above two theoretical approaches you would use in the circumstances of the case referred to in Part (a) and give your reasons for preferring this approach over the other. Do not describe what actually happened in the case. Focus on what you think would be the most appropriate approach in the light of your studies of the ethical theories. Indicate your chosen approach clearly at the beginning of this section and then argue your case for it.

Rationale
Assesment Item 1 has been designed to test your understanding of two ethical theories and your ability to criticaly apply them to an ethical issue.

A-FRAUD?
This is a problem. Are baseball players using steroids? I can’t believe it. Well, yes I can. I watched a skinny kid like Mark McGwire turn into this major buff guy. Maybe he just worked out a lot? I don’t know. But one thing is sure, baseball is a business. It is big business. Players are employees. The safety of the employees is an issue. Marketing is a problem and public relations. How does this affect the game?
Unlike other drug problems, this is not a public safety issue. Or is it? Are players role models? You know kids; they see they do.
Let’s take this now to the specific level.
Should Alex Rodriquiez be banned from playing Major Leauge Baseball?

Abstract (Summary)
— On secretly doing steroids: “I knew we weren’t taking Tic Tacs. I knew it potentially could be something that perhaps was wrong, but I really didn’t get into the investigation perhaps like I would’ve. But again, when you’re curious and you’re ignorant, there’s a lot of things you don’t tell a lot of people, not just that and that was one of those things I decided not to share with anyone.” That’s understandable. Bank robbers don’t sit around and talk about their boosts, do they, well outside of “The Usual Suspects” movie?
— On if he considers himself a cheater: “That’s not for me to determine.” Uh, yes, it is, if you read the question again. He continued: “I’m here to say I’m sorry, I wish went to college and had the opportunity to grow up at my own pace. If you’re young and stupid, you’re young and stupid. I’m guilty of both of those.” If he went to college, would it be a pharmaceutical one?
— On if the home-run record would be tainted if he conquers it: “I’m trying to get by the day today. It’s been a difficult week, been very painful for me and my family. I’m trying to take my medicine.” Wait, isn’t the record already tainted? Oh, that’s right, Barry Bonds said upon breaking it that it was not tainted. At all. Period.

EXPECTATIONS:

Make sure to show how your position is for the greatest good (utility) and respects basic rights (deontology)
