Weber’s Predictions

1. What evidence can you find in everyday life to support Weber’s

Korean War

The paper should also have thesis statement, main claim, sub claims and evidences that back it up.

Questions:

Do South Korean films depict North Koreans as enemy? Mainstream films in the U.S. where North Korea is figured like the Bond films, demonized North Korea as barbaric which is very different from South Korean films portray them. Why is this? Is it possible that South Korean films argue that North Korea is in fact the antinomies relationship artificial, fabricated, and perpetuated because we are beholden to geopolitics or is it somehow the last stand of the Cold War?

Global Urbanization and Development

1. First look over the data provided in the selected Tables from the World Development Report to get a
feel for which countries and regions have the highest levels of urbanization, and which ones will see
this grow the fastest to 2015. Then, select a set of 33 countries (do not choose any countries that are
missing the key data needed to complete 1a through 1f below). Your country set should be
representative of the globe (that is, you should have countries from all regions of the globe as well as
the different income levels, etc). Of these 32 countries, six must be: Canada, The United Kingdom,
Rep. of Korea, China, Pakistan, and Tanzania. Then, to illustrate the possible relationships between
urbanization and development, plot on standard graph paper:
a) the level of urbanization in 2005 (3rd column in Table A2) on the vertical (Y) axis against i)
the level of economic development as represented by PPP GNI$/per capita for 2007 (8th
column in Table 1), and in a separate graph, ii) Gross Domestic Product per capita % Growth
(9th column of Table 1). Place the latter variables on the horizontal (x) axis. Draw a (curved)
best fit line (by eye) for both. Label these graphs Figure 1 and Figure 2, and provide
appropriate titles etc.
b) the level of urbanization in 2005 on the vertical (Y) axis, against two measures of social
development on the horizontal (X) axis: i) female life expectancy at birth in 2006 (11th column
in Table 1), and ii) the Under 5 mortality rate per 1,000 in 2006 (9th column in Table 2). Draw
a best fit line for each (by eye). Label appropriately (Figures 3 and 4).
c) the level of urbanization in 2005 on the vertical (y) axis, against the value added as % of
GDP of i) agriculture, ii) industry, and iii) services (columns 5, 6 and 7 of Table 3). Draw a

Price Gouging

Technical Parameters: No more than two page faces, no smaller than 12 point font, single-spacing is fine, approximately 1-inch margins.
Assignment: Analyze market effects and discuss the economic arguments for and against price gouging laws. To be concrete, consider a law restricting firms from raising the price of such goods as milk, gasoline, water, or generators immediately before, during, and soon after a natural disaster such as a hurricane.
You must discuss (1) how the market will behave with and without such a price gouging law during a natural disaster and (2) the economic arguments for and against such a law. For (1) you will likely want to consider shifts in supply and/or demand curves, efficiency and equity effects, how consumer and producer surplus changes, how resources are ultimately allocated, incentives of consumers and firms, and the effect on firm revenues. It will be important to use correct economic terminology in your essay. Keep in mind:
1. This is not an explanation of what price gouging is, the moral issues involved, or the history of price gouging laws.
2. You must cite any sources (except your textbook). While you may find it helpful to read on the subject, this is not a research project. It is by no means necessary that you bring other sources into your essay in fact you probably will be better off not doing so. Your thoughts about the issue are sufficient.
3. You may discuss the essay with classmates but everyone must turn in their own work.
4. This is NOT a persuasive essay. The point is for you to present how price gouging laws will affect a market and discuss both sides of the issue from an economic point of view.
5. Graphs may be very helpful as you prepare your essay, but do not include any graphs with you essay.
6. Your essay must be a coherent presentation of the question at hand and issues involved. Simply a list or table of pros and cons, for example, is unacceptable..
7. Style, spelling, and grammar matters. You will need to be clear and concise.

You will be graded based on:
1. The quality and correctness of your economic analysis.
2. Correct use of economic terms.
3. Quality of presentation, including spelling and grammar (as a secondary criteria)

Poverty and Early Childhood development

Describe, in detail, the effects that Poverty has on Early Child hood development, using a multi-dimensional perspective.

A. Research the social problem in at least 4 sources (texts, scholarly articles, preferably no more than 8 years old) that include non-required and required readings, and provide both a historical perspective of the problem and a detailed overview of the problem from a macro perspective.
B. Provide a detailed description of the chosen life stage, utilizing information from required readings and demonstrating a solid understanding of what the different perspectives and theories have to say about the particular stage. (What ages are covered in this stage? What are the tasks, etc.?)
C. Demonstrate how the social problem can and does impact development during the particular stage in question. Consider all aspects of development (cognitive, moral, biological, etc.), and how this problem may impact on the individual and the systems that they are a part of (for instance, if you chose alcoholism and middle childhood, it is likely that the alcoholic is not the child, but a parent. Write about how alcoholism in the family impacts on that child’s development. Then, write about how that child’s developmental response to the problem may impact the systems they are a part of, such as friendships, the school system, the community, etc.).
D. Discuss resiliency and its relevance to what you’ve been writing about. Identify developmental risk and protective factors as they relate to the individual’s level of resilience during the particular life stage. Using the theory of resiliency, how might social work interventions (from both macro and micro perspectives) positively impact someone in the chosen life stage? What interventions (macro/micro) might be constructed to deal with this problem at this particular life stage? Are there best practices already being employed with this problem and life stage? What challenges to these interventions exist? This is an extremely important part of your paper.

N.B

Be sure to include how issues of gender, class, geography, culture, oppression, economic climate, and other macro issues have impact on what you’ve been discussing.

Expectations:

You should not be self-referential in this paper, refer to APA format for point of view (use the third person point of view the study showed instead of I studied). You must use all required texts for this paper (Hutchison, Carter and McGoldrick, Herman, Greene), in addition to references from required and suggested journal articles. There should be multiple references from each required text. References should support your arguments, and demonstrate an integration of thought and understanding, not merely statements plucked from text. APA format will be used.
