Digital Divides

Minimum Word Count: 700 words
Maximum Word Count: 800 words
1) Define, compare, and discuss the terms “Digital Native” and Digital Immigrant”. What are the benefits and the pitfalls of this adversarial and oppositional standpoint of internet users and/or generations.
• The ‘tone’ of this question is academic and more ‘formal’.
2) Discuss and articulate your own experience (or perhaps that of your family or a friend) of the ‘Digital Divide’ or ‘Digital Inequality’. Give one example/experience and: name the type of digital divide and offer some explanation and description; give some insight into the experience/what happened; address the socio-cultural significance and implication of this digital divide experience individually and broadly. (Some hints to guide you: why does this discussion matter? why is this experience important? what does this experience show us about how the digital divide plays out in people’s lives? what does this example demonstrate about people’s relationship with the internet? etc. The key is to move beyond descriptive and grapple with the impact and role of this example in your life – and how it reflects and connects to larger societal issues.)
• The ‘tone’ of this question combines academic and casual tone.
Notes:
• You must answer/address both questions.
• You are required to stay within the minimum and maximum word count.
• Please pay attention to your writing style – grammar and punctuation matter. Have someone proofread your work.
• Question 1 & 2 must include direct references to one or more of the assigned readings.
• Properly cite any readings that you use. Reference list is not included in the word count.
• Use APA format for citing the readings and for your reference list – no need for title pages, or other formatting for this assignment.
• Do not use any direct quotes in your module submissions. Instead, rephrase and cite properly.

The History and the Impacts of the Technology Used by the Deaf People to Make their Lives Easier

As man celebrated the invention of telephone in the late eighteenth century, there was a group of people that did not celebrate; that is the people with hearing disabilities (Ladner, 15). People who are deaf depend on the hearing family members, neighbours, friends and people of good will to help them communicate with others. In 1960s however, Robert Weitbrecht, a deaf scientist invented a teletypewriter (TTY) for the deaf (Ladner, 15). The invention enabled people with hearing disabilities to call each other directly using the devices that were fixed with acoustic couplers. Today, there are even more technological developments to aid persons with hearing disabilities to communicate more effectively.
With more technological inventions, it remains to determine how technology has impacted hearing and effective communication for persons with hearing disabilities. The proposed study delves into the history of the technology used by the deaf people to make their lives easier, and how this technology impacts on the lives of the deaf people. The topic is relevant as it highlights how the technology has been used to make life easier for persons with hearing impairments over the years. In addition, the exposition of the current topic highlights the achievements that persons with disabilities can attain if their lives are made easier via utilization of the technology.

Impact of 3D animation on all forms of animation.

Please note that while this is a research paper and needs to meet the goals and expectations of graduate level writing, I also do not want it to be written in verbiage or tome that may be considered overly “high brow”. That’s not who I am, not how I would write. I also work in the industry I’m referencing (3D Animation) so, I will want it to have the feeling of someone who is both knowledgable and engaged in the subject matter.

The paper is to address, clearly communicate and provide reference supporting the following…

“Despite the seemingly negative impact CGI has had on “traditional” forms of animation, it’s rise is ultimately responsible for the continual success of all forms of animation.”

Other information for the paper is as follows…

It’s a research paper, so you must state supported facts from a reliable source like IMDB.com, cartoonbrew.com or awn.com or the books Of Mice and Magic or any from the book list on the Reference section of the class home page (or any other book). If your information is from the internet double check by finding another source that supports the facts. Since there’s no editor, anyone can post misinformation.

There should be support information in books, magazines, DVD extras and the internet.

You must have at least one [THIS STATES ONLY ONE IS REQUIRED, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE AT LEAST 2-3, IF POSSIBLE] non-electronic print source, like a book or magazine (in the past I’ve gotten almost nothing but web sites for sources).
Also you must come to some conclusion, and use your research information and examples from films to support your conclusion.

The paper must be at least 1500 words and no more than 2,500 words.

Keep track of where your information comes from, and write down the sources in a bibliography at the end of your paper.

I’m happy to provide more information or context if needed.

Social Computing

In this activity we want you to choose one of the social networks below and investigate the technologies that are needed to make it work. Then we want you to find software components that could be assembled together to build a similar service. These could be Open Source or commercial software.. Find at least 3 tools and spend some time deciding which one would be most useful to a brand.

The whole activity should take around 2 hours.

1. Which service have you chosen for this activity?
• Facebook
• Twitter
• Quora
• Instagram
• Tinder

2. List 10 specific pieces of functionality that are delivered by the service. Focus on breaking the service down into functional components such as profiles, search, galleries etc.

3. List 8-10 different technologies that are used to deliver this service adding a brief description of what this does for the service.
Think about the software technologies that make up the service such as web servers, databases, search, pattern matching etc. This is harder than it looks but essential to part 5.

4. Discuss the technical challenges of building a similar service yourself based on hosting technologies you have explored in previous activities. What pieces of the jigsaw are missing? List 3 different specific technical issues you can see.

5. List the open source or commercial software components (including URLs) that you have found that would allow you to recreate the core functionality of your chosen network.

6. List at least 3 free monitoring/analytics tools that you would recommend to a company to help them manage their social media activities. Find
3 more and decide which of them you would recommend to a company to get maximum value out of their social channels.

7. Which of the above measurement tools you would recommend and why?

IT & Leadership

Syllabus:

Paper: Why is it critical to have effective leadership in the information technology arena? The correlation between the information technology career field and leadership needs to be effectively introduced and explained (It is not acceptable to simply discuss effective leadership in general without the information technology linkage. Find references that talk about this!).

At the graduate level I expect you to go beyond the “bare bones minimum.” When appropriate, you should include references from outside authors (“A” level papers include references that go beyond the required textbooks or materials).

Your papers should provide evidence of graduate level reflection and not simple regurgitation. When you seek alternative references, make sure that these are integrated into the text rather than simply cut and pasted. Look for themes as you read the literature – common categories shared by multiple authors. Consider the implications of your findings. Always include a thoughtful ‘so what’ conclusion.

Your writing style and the application of grammatical and APA rules should be APA style, 6th edition. I will also consider the structure of your papers. Are they easy to read? Do you subdivide the topics into reasonable themes? Do you use subheadings where appropriate? You are in a graduate level program. I will reject undergraduate level work.
