listening exercise

TASK 2

You are going to prepare a listening exercise which will firstly train listening for gist, then move on to develop listening for detail.

Because we have already mentioned the importance of using authentic materials, your task is this:

1. Record the news from: (a) the radio OR (b) as a podcast from a website. Ideally you need a 2-3 minute bulletin with at least 8 different news items. Make a written transcript of the broadcast.

2. Set a pre-question for your students, to prepare them for the listening session.

3. Make a list of at least 12 general topic areas, such as ‘politics’,
‘sport’, ‘famous personalities’ etc.

4. Formulate a task for the first listening. At this stage, your students will have to identify which of the12 topics are mentioned and which are not. It is therefore important to have some distractors in your list. To make it more challenging, ask students to number them in the order in which they are mentioned.

5. For the second listening, you could use a range of question types to
focus students on one or two sections of the news to help develop
the skills of listening for detail.

6. Decide on ONE topic in the news recording that you think is
interesting and make a few suggestions on how you might develop it
with a class.

So TASK 2 is:

– record the news and transcribe it
– set a pre-question to arouse interest in the recording
– make a list of 12 general topics and set a task to practice listening for
gist.
– write 2 different types of exercise to practise listening for detail
on one or two sections of the text avoiding very short exercises and
questions that require difficult names or simple numbers as answers.
– suggest one way that you could extend or develop one topic in the
broadcast

NB DO NOT send your recording. You must include a transcript of the news and your exercises, but NOT THE RECORDING.

Expectations
1. Take a critical approach based on journal articles, textbooks and websites;
2. Topics areas should be based on multiple sources to demonstrate in-depth research;
3. Structure the assignment based on the funnel approach. Explain the concept from different perspectives i.e. compare and contrast and the concepts. Then focus on the specifics of the assignment i.e. how these concepts/factors affect advertising;
4. Select a specialist area (e.g. the impact of culture on advertising or the role of internationalisation on advertising) of advertising and discuss this in detail. This section will occupy 1/3 of the assignment. What are the main ideas and concepts in the field? The rest of the assignment should focus on general concepts and factors relating to advertising;
5. Use illustrative examples to reinforce the analysis and the concepts;
6. Clearly link the conclusion/recommendations to the previous analysis.
Assessment
Referencing, structure and general presentation – 10%
Research – use of journal articles, textbooks and websites with more marks for balance between journal articles and textbooks. The more sources used (cited and included in the list of references) the more credible and convincing the research – 20%
Discussion – level of analysis i.e. identify advertising factors and concepts that make advertising effective and explain how these factors and concepts help advertising become effective. Use illustrative examples throughout to help explain how these factors and concepts affect the effectiveness of advertising in practice – 60%
Conclusion – summary of the main findings – 10%
100%

The assignment is scheduled for submission Friday week 7. Individual (theory) report should be no longer than 2,000 words + or – 10% excluding appendices.

Reimagining Formal Concerts to Make Performances more Accessible

A. Begin by thinking about a current problem in the music industry (within the past 10 years). Choose one to focus on. Types of challenges to consider:
• Audience size and demographics for classical / jazz / art music.
• Monetizing music in the age of file sharing (how musicians can be fairly paid).
• Reimagining formal concerts to make performances more accessible.( that’s the topic I choose)

B. Now, find a creative solution and approach to this problem you just identified. Search online to find a creative solution within the past ten years from a credible news outlet such as the following major news outlets and relevant professional music magazines.

We are looking for something that has made substantial impact. Your innovation should have:
• Information detailing how this innovation has changed either the music industry itself or a particular community.
• Details on who or what has been affected by the change and HOW they’ve been affected.
• Evidence of the innovation’s impact from a credible source: include a URL to an article from a trusted major news outlet detailing the innovation and its impact. Examples must come from major newspapers/blogs or professional music magazines—NOT Wikipedia or the company’s or innovator’s own promotional material.

NOTE: We are asking you to identify new innovations and surprise us with what you find! So do NOT use these well-known innovations: The Met Opera Simulcasts, Spotify, and YouTube—think broadly and do research to find other possibilities.

In the News!

Assignment:
Post one news source as a response to this Assignment. Explain briefly (paragraph length) how the news story bears on the discussion topics or the required readings from above.
I’m looking for you to explicitly state what the connection is to this required reading. When you do that, please be very specific — which reading does it relate to? Or which section, chapter, case study, etc. in our DRS text does it relate to?
The choice of media is yours. News should be fairly current, not more than 2 months old.  – move the cursor around the world to find newspapers and the front pages of newspapers.We are looking for you to post articles that relate directly to global BUSINESS news —

How does mainstream media in Australia affect how the public view racial minorities.

Research Question: define your research question. What is the thesis or argument you want to put forward? What is the critical issue you want to address?
Project Rationale: Relate your project to the present state of knowledge in the field. Why is this project important and why now? Contextualise your project’s critical issue historically, culturally, theoretically.
Methodology: What methodology or methodologies are you going to use? You may use any of the methodologies we have studied or you may choose one not covered this semester in consultation with your tutor. Defend its utility for your topic, examine other texts that have dealt with similar subject areas in a similar way (you may like to extend a few entries from your annotated bibliography). Include any practical steps you may need to take (e.g. gaining access to media archives, creating survey questions for ethnographic research, etc).

Social Media Influences the Rise of Eating Disorders

Please include these methods in my research paper and how they relate to the question ” does social media increase the rise of eating disorders’

Research Proposal Methods
Critical Literature Review & Content Analysis: please analyse the annotated bibliography and relate the critical literature review to this.
I will undertake a critical literature review
Surveys: In the proposal it was stated that surveys will be conducted with a sample population of 70 people, to gather information. There will be division of the study population into four groups on basis of the hours each person spends on social networks, their gender and their age. The surveys will include questions on how a person feels about his/her self image, his/her weight and his/her identity and if he/she feels that social media networks affects their perception of himself/herself. Please use these survey findings and come to a consensus of whether social media influences the rise of eating disorders.

Poll taking: The research will also include a poll taking to establish if the individuals agree or disagree that social media contributes to the increase in eating disorders. Please establish poll findings and evaluate whether this leads to social media contributing to the increase in eating disorders.

Also include the following theories and explain how this relates to the topic ( was mentioned in my speech)

Agenda Setting
Cultivating Theory
Concept of Framing

It is also a requirement to also talk about ” the embodied media and the quantified self”

This means that nowadays, media studies has examined representations of bodies in cultural texts such as magazines or movies, and asked how they reproduce dominant myths of gender, beauty, race and so forth. New technologies such as smart phones and self-tracking health apps are radically challenging this approach. They ask us to look at technology as an extension, augmentation or prosthesis of the body.

So make you answer: How can we critically conceptualise the embodied nature of media technologies? ( relating to my question of course)

The biggest thing is answering all these questions but more so… how can we learn from this question? is media influencing the way we think about our bodies? is there a way for change?

But also remembering that the research paper relates to the idea of whether social media contributes to the rise of eating disorders and all theories concepts and research methods should relate to this.

Apple Music Streaming Service

Media Kit

are the PR contact for PROW 210. The class is planning an event. Your job is to promote this event by creating a media kit. You may make up the event and event details. Your media kit must contain a press release, a backgrounder, a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs), and a blog for Blackboard, which is available to all of MacEwan. Be sure to use proper layout, formatting, and content, utilizing the examples provided in class and your textbook.
Some things to consider include:
 What is the purpose of the media kit?
 Who is the target audience?
 Why would my target audience care about this event?
 How should the pieces be formatted?
 What information should be included?
 What ‘hooks’ can I use?
