Leadership Credibility
Credibility is essential to effective, transformational leadership: from resolving various critical issues and problems that organizational leaders face to developing a passionate constituency who will follow and be stimulated by a collective vision. A key element of this credibility is integrity, which is rooted in self-knowledge and understanding (and a key tenant of servant and transformational leadership!).
In serving a purpose, leaders strengthen credibility by demonstrating that they are not in it for themselves; instead, they have the interests of the institution, department, or team and its constituents at heart. Being a servant may not be what many leaders had in mind when they choose to take responsibility for the vision and direction of their organization or team, but serving others is the most glorious and rewarding of all leadership tasks. (Kouzes & Posner, 2003, p. 185). How do you, as an emerging leader, develop and engender credibility and a transformational relational approach amongst your constituency?

The first coursework (worth 20% of the total marks for the module) is an INDIVIDUAL piece of work (maximum 2,000 words) excluding final list of references. Please note there is no plus or minus 10% rule on this module), critically appraising some of the theoretical concepts and techniques introduced in the lectures in weeks 1-7.

Write an essay answering the following question:

Critically evaluate how useful the undertaking of a “strategic position” analysis may be for an organisation? Critically discuss the view that the market/environment should be emphasised more than resources when an organisation is undertaking a “strategic position” analysis.

Word count-The only words that do not countin your essay are the front page (on which you put your srn, name of the module, word count, title of the coursework, my name as module leader) and the end of essay list of references (using Harvard system of referencing).You are NOT allowed to have an appendix. Re the WORD COUNT and other issues you must read the section below entitled “Guidance for completing BOTH coursework’s/key information for the module”. That section gives the regulations for this c/w 1 re the word count (eg issues concerning words/numbers in “diagrams” etc.).

Your work will be marked and graded in accordance with the grading and marking criteria for assignment one (see pages 15, 16, 17 below).

Before you begin crafting your discussion response for this week, be sure to read required materials and watch Episode Two of the Designing Healthy Communities PBS miniseries. These episodes are designed to work with the readings to give you a broad understanding of the topics that we discuss in class.

Take a look at the importance of strong leadership and planning in both Charleston and Elgin and answer the following questions:
•Who were the important players, or partners, in these cities?
•How did their leadership succeed?
•How did their leadership fail?
•What were the long-term goals for each city’s revival?
•Describe your thoughts on the successes and failures in both cities.

Now, choose a city other than Charleston and Elgin and discuss how your chosen city might benefit from the lessons learned in Elgin and Charleston.

In your response, be sure to identify: 1) your chosen city, 2) a leadership issue(s) in that city and the time period in which it (they) occurred (can be a current issue, too), 3) the leadership involved in the issue, and 4) how the lessons learned in Elgin and Charleston relate to these issues.

State your chosen city at the beginning of your post. Try to choose a city that is different from that used by your classmates. Post your response by Thursday and comment on at least two other students’ posts by Sunday night.
