Assessment 2 Further Guidance

Report
• The cover page, executive summary and table of contents are NOT included in the word count, but MUST be included in the report.
• It is recommended that your report include a short introductory paragraph which introduces the topic and outlines the report structure.
• It is recommended that you critically discuss ONE opportunity and ONE challenge in relation to your chosen topic. (n.b., you will have developed an understanding of the opportunities and challenges through participation in class time during the “leaders and teams” activity).
• It is REQUIRED that you refer to TWO theoretical approaches to leadership, at least ONE of which MUST be drawn from the four topics covered in TB2 TW2 & TW3. The OTHER approach may be chosen from among ALL leadership topics covered throughout the academic year.
• It is recommended that you briefly integrate and cite ideas appropriately from the guest change and decision making lectures (TB2 TW1 & TW4).
• It is recommended that the conclusion (i.e., the action plan) proposes TWO distinct and feasible actions which clearly derive from your discussion and which are discussed in detail.
• It is recommended that you cite a minimum of EIGHT appropriate and different academic sources in the body of the text (n.b., cited references should be listed in a reference list at the end of the report).
• The reference list is NOT included in the word count, but the in-text citations ARE included in the word count.
• There should be ONE joint reference list for the report and reflective essay combined.
• It is recommended that you use headings appropriately to structure the work and guide the reader. Headings ARE included in the word count.

Reflective Essay

• It is recommended that you discuss in detail ONE area of strength and ONE area for development. It is recommended that you briefly note others.
• It is REQUIRED that you limit your discussion to the area of your chosen topic only. The choice of topics, noted in the brief above, is, once again:
i. Encourage creativity and innovation in a team you belong to; OR
ii. Support new strategic imperatives such as equality, diversity and inclusion or sustainability; OR
iii. Rework organisational design for VUCA environments.
• It is recommended that you cite a minimum of TWO appropriate and different academic sources in the body of the text (n.b., cited references should be listed in a reference list at the end of the report).
• Label the reflective essay “Appendix 1”. Further headings are NOT required, nor are they useful in this instance.
• The reference list is NOT included in the word count, but the in-text citations ARE included in the word count.
• There should be ONE joint reference list for the report and reflective essay combined.
Assessment 2 Grading Guidance

When considered together, the report including the reflective essay, will be awarded grades as follow:

To gain a Distinction, ALL elements of the brief must be included and MOST will be addressed to at least a very good standard. (n.b. Marks between 75-85% will similarly be awarded to work which is at least excellent. Likewise marks between 85- 100% will be awarded to work which is at least outstanding). It will include a strong critical discussion.

Distinction level work is focused and clearly organised, and it shows depth of development including strong critical discussion. The language is precise and shows syntactic variety, and ideas are clearly communicated to the reader.

leadership for public and community services

2.A 2000 word written individual assignment which will be awarded a grade 1-20 (see below for details) and weighted as 80% towards the individual’s overall grade. The assignment for this module assesses the application of leadership theory and modules for the potential application to your own practice. This will involve you in undertaking a particular review of the different tools introduced during the module in order to examine and analyse the different leadership styles and processes and secondly; to reflect on your own potential to develop, consolidate or improve your leadership style.

The assignment therefore has three components:
a) The selection and application of one or more of the tools referred to in the module and an active review how the tool/s can be used to review, examine and assess your own personal leadership style and your effectiveness as leader.
b) Building on this analysis, write a reflective commentary on what leadership models and theories have to offer your own potential to be a leader and to work more effectively with others. You should explicitly discuss how the tool/s you have used can influence or have influenced your own professional practice.
c) Identify and discuss a couple of recommendations from 1) & 2) above which could be made to in order improve the experiences of those you work with or have worked with. It would be worth identifying who else would be involved in the recommendations made and how you could evaluate their effectiveness by involving others.

Please note that there will be a specific session on assignment preparation during the module where you will be encouraged to develop and support your ideas more fully and you will be given further written guidance at this stage.

Occasionally there may be a situation where students are not able to participate in the group presentation. Student should provide evidence as to a valid reason for this in line with assessment regulations so that alternative arrangements are made for them to provide evidence at a later date to meet the learning outcomes for the outstanding 20% of their overall grade.

There is no automatic deferral permitted on this module. You should consult your programme handbook for the requirements for assessment and for details of what to do if you are having problems which may prevent you from submitting your assessment.

Personal reflection
Being an introvert, which means I am not very comfortable with sharing my ideas and thoughts with others. In the past, I lacked confidence when I was asked for my opinion or ideas fearing judgment from others. Through this module I have learned to determine how climate plays a crucial role as well as how to overcome my weaknesses. During the facilitator and client session, I learned that a facilitator who understands how to deal with each person makes you more comfortable and confident in sharing your ideas and thoughts with others and reaching a common goal. Having a leader that does not discriminate the opinions of the team members, and urges the team to give their opinions about certain project problems gave us freedom to be creative and more expressive.
Having experienced the 2:1 group, I felt it worked well because it gave me the opportunity to work independently while also being able to work with other members in the group. Having a leader that challenges your opinions by asking questions that could trigger creative discussions and using brainstorming made me realize my behavioral barriers that could hinder the progress of the team’s development strategy. This mechanism actually made me more comfortable and more creative; I was able to come up with more creative ideas without feeling judged or afraid.
Additionally, a leader that is able to add a factor of fun to the project can engage the team members and peak their interest in the said project. This leadership style gave me the freedom to exercise my preferred problem-solving ideas.

I am more of a developer than an explorer, I’m very shy and i like to follow not lead. during the course i learned about the characteristics of successful leaders as well as importance of climate change. i worked in an organization ( Dubai electricity and water authority) and it was so negative that it made me not want to work, i became so demotivated that i quit my job. the climate was horrible. My manager was horrible, he was never there and never taught me anything, i was teaching my self everything.

If this is not sufficient information, i will be happy to provide more.
Please feel free to contact me if needed.

Week 11 Assignment 1

Assignment Introduction and Context:

In your course project, you will apply all five of the leadership challenge practices to your leadership setting with careful attention paid to your style or SHAPE profile. You must also include how you as a leader fit in this system. You may incorporate a revised version (based upon instructor’s feedback) of W8 Assignment 2 “The Content of the Leader’s Heart.”

Tasks:

Write a personal engagement and a reaction paper of 2,500–3,000 words:
Briefly define the five practices of the leadership challenge model and apply a comprehensive plan of how you will utilize each core activity in your church or leadership context.
As you apply these five practices (also factor in your SHAPE profile), offer some ideas on how your strengths best emerge in leadership.
Ensure this paper also reflects the areas where you need complimentary gifts from others to create a healthy organization.
This should become your “leadership manifesto” going forward.
Your final product will be in a Microsoft Word document. Utilize at least six sources from professional and academic literature in your research.

Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and formatted in Turabian style.

Each team must select a sample of 30 UK listed companies from Morningstar Company Intelligence (available under Learning Centre, electronic databases). For each of the companies, you are asked to collate data for the following variables (year 2014 or 2015 if available) and input these into SPSS:
1)Company size: Turnover, number of employees,
2)Company performance: ROCE, EPS, degree of internationalisation (% turnover derived from non-UK activities – from company facts report)
3)Board data: size of board, proportion of non-executive directors, proportion of women directors, average age of board, number of interlocking directorships
You are then asked to write a report on the relationship between corporate governance characteristics and firm performance which should include:
a)An introduction to your report and your selected companies (including an explanation of your sampling procedures).
b)A summary of descriptive statistics for key variables in your sample (min & max values, mean, standard deviation), and necessary variable transformations
c)The results from statistical tests about the relationship between board variables and firm performance, controlling for firm size
d)A discussion of your results. Here, you should discuss which organisational theories best explain your empirical observations and what other explanations there may be for your results.
e)A concluding summary in which you put forward recommendations on corporate governance that can influence companies’ performance, including internationalisation.
