Cost of Health Care

health, or the absence of such, can be very expensive. Many vulnerable populations simply do not have private funds available to pay for their care. Relating your research to individuals with mental conditions, select a mental illness of your choice and discuss your response to the following questions:

• What public financing resources are available to individuals with this particular mental condition?
• What are the eligibility requirements and restrictions to receive these funds?
• What happens if eligibility standards/requirements are not met by those with this illness?
• Research and discuss two methods of alternative funding for care for this group. What are the benefits and limitations of the methods you discussed?

Your initial contribution should be 250 to 300 words in length. Your research and claims must be supported by a minimum of two scholarly sources beyond your course text. Use proper APA formatting for in-text citations and references

Individual essay, 1500 words. Due October 16th, 12:00pm (35%)
Essay topic: Compare and contrast the impact of social determinants of health on one vulnerable group in two different countries of the world. Discuss how society has changed in these countries since the emergence of HIV/AIDS and what the impact has been on the chosen vulnerable group.
Choose one vulnerable group:
• Women
• Men who have sex with men (MSM)
• Sex workers
• Injecting drug users
Choose two countries from within the regions of the world:( Please note that is one country from one region and one from the other region, e.g. Swaziland and New Zealand or China and Australia)
• Sub-Saharan Africa
• Asia
• North Africa and the Middle East
• Latin America and the Caribbean
• North America, Western Europe, and Oceania (Pacific)
• Eastern Europe and Central Asia
Choose 2 – 3 social determinants to consider (you won’t be able to cover all of these, however many of these are interrelated):
• Discrimination and stigma
• Social justice
• Economics
• Living environment
• Health care system
The essay should build an argument that demonstrates original thinking and analysis as well as an understanding of different and diverse social and cultural perspectives. The essay MUST have an introduction, body and conclusion.
Do NOT use subheadings in the essay.

Referencing:
In text citations must be used and must conform to APA6 referencing conventions. A reference list must follow the essay. Its entries must be in alphabetical order, must use APA6 referencing style, and must be complete. Appropriate reference material must be used. Consumer sources, like the Better Health Channel, are not appropriate. School (VCE) material may not be used. Textbooks should be used as background material only. The references for the essay should consist of evidence-based, peer reviewed material similar to the sample references provided. Media and internet news/information sources may be used ONLY to document current social and cultural attitudes, if relevant.

Structure of the essay
Introduction:
• Briefly summarise the nature of HIV in the two chosen countries with reference to the patterns of transmission (You should NOT discuss the physiological mechanism of disease).
• Provide an overview of the impact of the social determinants of health in the context of HIV/AIDS in relation to one vulnerable group in the two countries.
• Indicate the changes that have occurred in these two countries in relation to the chosen vulnerable group.
• Include definitions of key terms to be used in the body of the essay and provide an outline of the key points to be discussed, clearly setting up the structure for the body of the essay.
Body:
Impact of social determinants:
Should cover your understanding of the impact of the social determinants of health in the context of HIV/AIDS in relation to the chosen vulnerable group in the two countries.
How society has changed:
Illustrate how society has changed and thus adapted in response to the presence of HIV/AIDS in relation to the chosen vulnerable group and the two countries you have identified.
Conclusion:
Should briefly summarise the main points in the essay and draw conclusions about the impact of social determinants of health in the context of HIV/AIDS and how society has changed in response to the presence of HIV/AIDS. No new information should be brought up in the conclusion.

Additional Information:
It is important when evaluating the countries or regions to discuss for this essay that the data is consistent for all countries in that region, For example, “do all the countries in the UK experience the same access to health care, education, infrastructure and resources”? if so then go ahead and use the UK as one of your countries, if not then re-evaluate. not all countries within a regions are the same and have the aforementioned resources, this could make it difficult to compare and contrast with another country.

Culture has a big impact on the countries ,but you can look at it under discrimination and stigma because the discrimination experienced in this location is largely blamed on the beliefs of the people in that country. You could equally look at it under social justice because many laws/legal systems have a foundation in religious teachings and the ideas of fairness, compassion etc. It’s important to make sure you focus on the issues relating to the countries and the determinants that are impacting on the spread of disease

Anemia

In clinical settings, advanced practice nurses often encounter patients with blood disorders such as anemia. Consider the case of a 17-year-old girl who is rushed to the emergency room after suddenly fainting. The girl’s mother reports that her daughter has had difficulty concentrating for the past week, frequently becomes dizzy, and has not been eating normally due to digestion problems. The mother also informs the nurse that their family has a history of anemia. With the family history of anemia, it appears that this is the likely diagnosis. However, in order to properly diagnose and treat the patient, not only must her symptoms and family history be considered, but also factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, and behavior. This poses the question: How do patient factors impact the incidence and prevalence of different types of anemia?

To prepare:
•Review Chapter 20 in the Huether and McCance text. Reflect on the pathophysiological mechanisms of iron deficiency anemia.
•Select one of the following types of anemia: pernicious anemia, folate deficiency anemia, sideroblastic anemia, chronic inflammation anemia, or post-hemorrhagic anemia. Identify the pathophysiological mechanisms of the anemia you selected.
•Consider the similarities and differences between iron deficiency anemia and the type of anemia you selected.
•Reflect on how patient factors such as genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, and behavior might impact these anemic disorders.

Post on or before Day 3 an explanation of the pathophysiological mechanisms of iron deficiency anemia and the anemia you selected. Compare these two types of anemia, as well as their potential causes. Finally, explain how genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, and behavior might impact the anemic disorders you selected.

Exploring Health Education Discussion week 7

of Effective Health Educators
What does it mean to be an effective health educator?
Educational attainment, credentialing, and work experience contribute to attributes of health educators in practice. However, might health educators possess additional unique attributes that make them strategically positioned to be more effective? As individuals, we all possess unique attributes and talent that contribute to success in specific areas of day-to-day life. Considering the attributes that you believe health educators should have may help you to identify those attributes that you already possess as well as identify potential areas to develop.
For this Discussion, reflect on those attributes you believe effective educators should possess. Then consider how you might incorporate those attributes into your current or future role as a health educator.
Post by Day 3 a description of three attributes that you believe effective educators should possess and explain why. Then explain how you would incorporate these attributes to become an effective provider of health education and why. Be specific and provide examples.

peers responses

Question 1: How do you feel about this patient? I feel sorry and compassion for this patient. It looks like he is buried under all of that machinery and it is also hard to make eye contact. It must be a lonely existence there with all the machines sounding off and nurses and doctors in and out.
Question 2: Now, how do you feel about your patient? This patient, after realizing that the cancer was not in remission lived his every day like it was his last. I really liked his spirit and attitude. I liked his statements about denial and how it can play havoc with our minds. We, as human beings, always think this won’t happen to me. I always liked how he said we must learn to accept our weaknesses and they are not going to go away. Every time a patient of mine passes expires I reflect on how he/she was before they came to that final resting place.
Question 3: “nurses caught up in the technological aspects of care may not recognize the person in amongst all the machinery, tubes, and monitoring devices”(p.790). Do you support this notion? Why or why not? What is the point of this assignment?
