Global Urbanization and Development

1. First look over the data provided in the selected Tables from the World Development Report to get a
feel for which countries and regions have the highest levels of urbanization, and which ones will see
this grow the fastest to 2015. Then, select a set of 33 countries (do not choose any countries that are
missing the key data needed to complete 1a through 1f below). Your country set should be
representative of the globe (that is, you should have countries from all regions of the globe as well as
the different income levels, etc). Of these 32 countries, six must be: Canada, The United Kingdom,
Rep. of Korea, China, Pakistan, and Tanzania. Then, to illustrate the possible relationships between
urbanization and development, plot on standard graph paper:
a) the level of urbanization in 2005 (3rd column in Table A2) on the vertical (Y) axis against i)
the level of economic development as represented by PPP GNI$/per capita for 2007 (8th
column in Table 1), and in a separate graph, ii) Gross Domestic Product per capita % Growth
(9th column of Table 1). Place the latter variables on the horizontal (x) axis. Draw a (curved)
best fit  line (by eye) for both. Label these graphs Figure 1 and Figure 2, and provide
appropriate titles etc.
b) the level of urbanization in 2005 on the vertical (Y) axis, against two measures of social
development on the horizontal (X) axis: i) female life expectancy at birth in 2006 (11th column
in Table 1), and ii) the Under 5 mortality rate per 1,000 in 2006 (9th column in Table 2). Draw
a best fit line for each (by eye). Label appropriately (Figures 3 and 4).
c) the level of urbanization in 2005 on the vertical (y) axis, against the value added as % of
GDP of i) agriculture, ii) industry, and iii) services (columns 5, 6 and 7 of Table 3). Draw a
best fit line for each (by eye). Label appropriately (Figures 5, 6 and 7).
d) The level of urbanization in 2005 on the vertical (Y) axis, against the Share of Poorest
Quintile in National Consumption or Income (1st column in Table 2) on the horizontal (x) axis.
Draw a best fit line (by eye). Label appropriately (Figure 8).
e) The level of urbanization in 2005 on the vertical (Y) axis, against a measure of gender
equality the Ratio of Girls to Boys education enrollment in 2006 (7th column in Table 2) on
the horizontal axis (x). Draw a best fit line (by eye). Label appropriately.
f) The level of urbanization in 2005 on the vertical (Y) axis, against the Carbon Dioxide
Emissions per capita in 2004 (last column in Table 1) on the horizontal (X) axis. Draw a best
fit line (by eye). Label appropriately……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Social Health Science

QUESTION:

A 14-yr-old boy has come to the clinic. He finds it very difficult to hear especially in a noisy environment. He has been tested earlier and was found to have normal hearing sensitivity on pure tone audiometry (PTA) and reflexes were present ipsilaterally and contralaterally for both ears for 500-2000Hz (normal responses) and otoacoustic emissions were present though were small for 1000-4000Hz. Note: Otoacoustic emissions measure outer hair cell function in the cochlear. Previously when he was tested, he was told that he may have auditory processing disorder (APD) but is not sure what it means or if it is that serious.
TASKS:
1) You need to first explain to the adolescent what APD is. (This will be a bit challenging I think, cause APD is too complex to explain, but try to explain in layman terms to the 14-year-old as best you can. Think of yourself as a clinician explaining APD to this 14-year-old and try to help him best understand what it means)
2) Then plan your test battery to diagnose if he has APD.
3) Lastly create a management plan to help him (this should include some suggestions regarding general communication strategies as well as some suggestions for classroom as well).
Put in headings to ease the read of the essay. Also advisable to concentrate on the three points mentioned and structure the essay that way. So perhaps start with introducing APD and what might be some of the telltale signs, and then another section saying how you would go about explaining APD to the 14-year-old and what you would say APD is to him (imagine talking to the 14-year-old). Then another section perhaps talking about the standard tests you would do. Then another section about the management for children with APD. And a conclusion summarising all those points.

How did the Centennial Exposition represent American Identity

What narratives of American history were on display at the Fair?

In 1876, Americans celebrated 100 years of nationhood. Throughout the United States, there were celebrations and expositions to commemorate this occasion. The largest of these celebrations was the American Centennial Exposition, held in Philadelphia in 1876. It was the first official World’s Fair in the United States and it attracted ten million visitors.

For this paper, I will give you a selection of approximately ten primary sources related to this event. These will include images, a guide to the exhibition, speeches, and other documents. You must examine these sources and then write a 4-5 page paper that answers the following: How did the Centennial Exposition represent American Identity? What narratives of American history were on display at the Fair?

Some things that you might want to consider:

What aspects of American culture and history did the fair highlight? What aspects did it leave out?

How did the fair portray the nation’s future? What narratives did it promote about the U.S.’s past?

How might the historical context of the fair (mid-1870s) have shaped the event?

Who did the fair portray as American?

What kinds of displays and events characterized the Centennial Celebration?

What can each primary source tell us about the fair?

Are there any additional primary sources that you wish you had?

Requirements:

4-5 pages, double-spaced

Analysis of AT LEAST 3 Primary Sources in your paper

Clear Thesis stated on first page

Clear topic sentences and structure

Proper Grammar, punctuation, etc.

Works Cited page if you use outside sources

The Official Language Movement

Resources: Racial and Ethnic Groups, the Internet.

Investigate the official language movement, which is an important Hispanic American cultural interest, described on pp. 243’244 of the text by researching bilingualism in education and politics in the United States.

Find four to six credible websites or articles supporting, opposing, or presenting information about bilingualism in education or politics. Most sources focus exclusively on either topic of education or politics; therefore, try to find at least two sources per topic.
Write one paragraph about each source, summarizing the main points presented.
Provide APA-formatted reference citations.

Women in Asia

Read the book “Women and the Family in Rural Taiwan.” Stanford University Press, 1972 by Margery Wolf.
This course is Asian studies but it specifically relates to how women are treated in Asia. Please use at least 1~2 quotes from the book to support my argument.

What structural conditions shape the experience of girls and women in the village of Peihotien, as described by Margery Wolf in Women and the Family in Rural Taiwan? What forms of social organization and cultural values shape these experiences? Please explain how these factors affect girls and women, not just what affects them. Is there anything in the gender system that Wolf describes that corresponds to something in your own situation?

I am looking for a 4-5 page paper, double spaced, with plausible margins and font size, that demonstrates your understanding of Wolf’s discussion in the book, and shows that you can apply her reasoning to other gender situations. If you quote from the book directly, please include the page number of the quotation.

Please only talk about the issues in the book Margery Wolf is talking about in the Women and the family in rural Taiwan.

Almost like a book report.

Do not put in any personal idea or facts from outside sources.

Please talk mostly about gender system that Wolf describes.

(My own situation can be how Asian women are treated in the United States.)

Mainstream Media portrayal of ongoing attacks in Iraq

This essay will be examining everything from an Arab-centric perspective.
Basically the overarching theme of the essay is outlining the difference between how mainstream media e.g Fox News, CNN cover militant attacks in Iraq when the victim is a random civilian vs a NATO ally or even an Iraqi Christian. We will be arguing that it perpetuates an Us vs them mentality. This is not all the essay is allowed to cover, but it should be broad enough to expand on.
