Essay #1: Rhetorical Analysis

Essay #1: Rhetorical Analysis
Formal Requirements
For this assignment, you are asked to write a critical analysis essay that addresses the following requirements:
• Must contain at least 700 words in AT LEAST five well-developed paragraphs.
• Must be composed in an exam book.
• Must provide a clear thesis statement that indicates the overall effectiveness of the author’s rhetorical strategies (pathos, ethos, logos).
• Must provide clearly written, fully developed analysis of the article in support of your thesis.
• Must be organized into proper essay structure (intro, at least three body paragraphs, and conclusion)
• Body paragraphs must be fully developed. (If you were typing, a body paragraph would contain 8-16 lines of typed text. Typing your draft will

help you gauge the development of your body paragraphs. Using PIE–Point, Illustrate, Explain–as a guide may help you to see where your body paragraphs

need more development.
• Must provide an appropriate introduction (providing all necessary background information) and conclusion (summing up the points of your

analysis) paragraph.
• Mustquote from the source in each body paragraph (******do NOT quote in the introduction OR the conclusion******), and provide correctly

executed in-text citations. Note: paraphrases with correctly executed in-text citations are acceptable, but not in lieu of quotes. Quoting from your

source provides specific evidence for your analysis directly from the author’s article, and in preparation for your research paper, I’m looking to help

you increase your confidence with using and responding to sources properly.
• Must provide proper in-text citations for quotes and paraphrases.
• Must provide a correctly formatted MLA Works Cited page.
• Must demonstrate effective analysis, college-level reading comprehension, and proper grammar and syntax.
Topic: For this essay, you will choose to critically analyze and evaluate one (only one!) of the articles from Chapter 21 of Practical Arguments.
Before you begin to write, consider the following in addition to the requirements listed above:
• You must read the articles carefully and critically to gain a deep understanding of the arguments the author presents and to help you evaluate

their effectiveness.
• Your thesis will indicate the effectiveness of the article and you will support your thesis with your analysis of the author’s rhetorical

strategies from the reading.
• Before writing: consider the article’s original publication: what is the article’s purpose? What is the primary argument made in the article?

What claims (besides the primary argument) are made? What evidence does the author provide to substantiate his or her claims? Is the evidence effective?

How and why? Are evidence and claims free of logical fallacy? What are the most important aspects of the analysis that demonstrate the article’s

effectiveness (or lack of effectiveness?)
• Consider, the author’s appeals to pathos (emotion), ethos (authority, credibility), and logos (logic). Are these effective? Why or why not?

Argument Standardisation and Analysis

Unprotected Sex Among Teens

Project statement:

According to survey, sexual transmitted diseases (STD’s) have increased among teenage boys and girls over the years due to unprotected sexual activities.

The survey has shown an increase of 52 percent of teenagers in the United States (Chapman, 2017). According to center of disease of control 34 percent of

teens reported having unprotected sex (CDC 2008). Teenagers frequently like to experience sexual intercourse during their adolescence. Oftentimes, they

don’t have the proper knowledge on how to protect themselves. As a result, this can lead to engaging in unprotected sex which has consequences which

include contracting STD’s and unwanted pregnancies. Unprotected sex is common among the youth due to lack of proper teaching regarding sexual intercourse.

1 out of 5 girls admit they want to be moms as a teen (Fuzzell, et al. 2017). Boys, on the other hand, are driven to engage in unsafe sex due to the

influence of drugs and peer influences, which is also applicable to some teenage girls. As nurses, it is our job is to gain the patients’ trust, teach

them, care for them without judging them, and be their advocate. Having professionals available in schools and local clinics to educate them, and make free

condoms available to them will combat the epidemic of STD’s. According to a study carried out by Kirby (2012), an estimated economic burden of about $15.9

lies on the cases of sexually transmitted diseases among teens, this is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention while teen pregnancies

amounts to $9billion of taxpayers’ money annually. The estimated rate of teen births among females of between 15-19 years is about 20.3 in every 1000 girls

in Broward County, Florida (Watson, 2016). Proper measures need to be put in place not only in schools but also at home in order to minimize the rates of

unprotected sex among teenagers. Some of the measure include proper parenting where parents need to educate their teens on the dangers associated with

unprotected sex. Secondly, schools and the community as a whole need to implement programs that offer sex education to teenagers with an example of such a

program already existing in Broward County where about 5300 teenagers go through sex education classes annually and consequently are saving the government

an estimated figure of $1.25 million annual cost on teenage pregnancies.

Plan: Evidence of completion teaching method of PowerPoint presentation and a poster

Goal: Upon completion of this lesson teens will practice safe sex as evidence by the rate of STD’s will decrease to 20% in Broward County within 6 months

after completing this lesson.

Effective Leadership

Effective Leadership- Instructions

Overview:

Write an essay detailing a selected individual’s leadership style and approaches in relationship to his or her communication, using and applying

various leadership methods and theories.

• Competency: Analyze business communication situations.
o Analyze a leader’s methods of influence.
Competency: Analyze the interrelationships of communication within organizational systems.
o Apply theories related to leadership styles to describe a leader’s communication.
o Analyze a leader’s communication from a situational leadership perspective.
o Describe a leader’s use of power bases in relationship to a leader’s communication.
Competency: Communicate effectively.
o Consistently apply appropriate APA style and formatting.

Context:
This assessment focuses on the ever evolving topics of organizational leadership and effective communication competencies:
• Who are the truly influential leaders in our organizations and personal lives?
• How do we each individually define leadership and how did we come to our current level of understanding?

Modern thought holds that true leadership versus management occurs when followers willingly choose to follow their leader out of a belief in their

ability to manifest a well communicated mission, goal or outcome. Hamel and Prahalad (1996) write, “The role of leader as forecaster is to

articulate a future so full of exciting possibilities that no one will be able to rest until it is achieved” (p. 186).

According to Farren and Kaye (1996), “Leaders are bridges that connect people to the future. They include others’ visions in their own, building

alliances and partnerships based on shared aspirations” (p. 187). True leadership results in shared realities and a sense of trust!

In addition, it has been suggested that potential followers engage in both conscious and unconscious evaluations of a potential leader, but they

will only follow and strive to perform at their full potential if they believe this leader to be credible. To help support this theory, Bornstein

and Smith (1996) have identified what they consider to be the Six Cs of Leadership Credibility:
• Conviction: The passion and commitment the person demonstrates toward his or her vision.
• Character: Consistent demonstration of integrity, honesty, respect, and trust.
• Care: Demonstration of concern for the personal and professional well-being of others.
• Courage: Willingness to stand up for one’s beliefs, challenge others, admit mistakes, and change one’s behavior when necessary.
• Composure: Consistent display of appropriate emotional reactions, particularly in tough or crisis situations.
• Competence: Proficiency in hard skills, such as technical, functional, and content expertise skills, and soft skills, such as interpersonal,

communication, team, and organizational skills (pp. 283–284).

We all act as both leaders and followers within our families, at work, and in our social lives. Take some time reflect upon our own beliefs and

competencies in regard to leadership and communication.

Narrative essay

Narrative essay

write about an event that impacted your life including the conflict and resolution of your narrative.
Using the first person point of view, develop the story line.
In effective narratives, there is a five point development:

1) Exposition / Prologue -This provides background and sets the stage for your narrative.
2) Rising Action -This develops the conflict of the narrative.
3) Climax or Turning Point-This is the highest point of intensity in your narrative.
4) Falling Action-This recounts events that happen after the climax of your narrative.
5. Resolution -This is different than a conclusion since it conveys how the conflict of the narrative was resolved. For the development of this paper, utilize the five points of narrative writing.

In addition to the five point development of your narrative, utilize key literary elements for communicating your narrative such as plot, setting, theme, and dynamic characterization (for definitions of these terms, click “help files” on the upper right of this module page).
The challenging element of writing a narrative is how to convey in a clear manner the main character’s actions without merely listing a sequencing of facts. The character’s actions should speak and show the underlying feelings and emotions of the situation.

Red Sports Car

After reading the passage below, you must answer the questions that follow. Please make your answers as comprehensive as possible, and document

any sources that you use following APA format.
Chapter 4 Case Study: Red Sports Car

Officer Webster was patrolling downtown Sometown late Saturday night. Primarily, she was on the lookout for drunk drivers after the bars

closed, but violent incidents were on the rise in the area, so she was also looking for suspicious activity. She had just pulled over across

the street from the Sometown Pub when a red sports car went speeding by. Officer Webster turned on her siren and pursued the sports car. The

car pulled over, and Officer Webster approached the vehicle. When she got to the door, she noticed the driver shoving something under the front

seat. She rapped on the window, and the driver, visibly angry, rolled it down.
“What?” he said.
Officer Webster told him to step out of the vehicle. The driver slammed the door and stepped toward Officer Webster. She then ordered him to

turn around and place his hands on the roof of the vehicle. The man swore, but he complied. Officer Webster did a weapons pat-down and did not

find a weapon.
“OK, Sir, now I need to see some identification.” When the man handed over his license, she saw that his name was Herman Knoxville. Before

running his license, she shined her flashlight in the sports car. Sticking out from under the front seat, she saw a revolver. She seized it. In

addition, she also saw a small bag containing a white powdery substance next to the revolver. She seized that as well.
“You should see what’s in the trunk” Knoxville asked menacingly.
Officer Webster just placed Herman Knoxville under arrest.
