Write a two page paper regarding a project, either real or fictitious, where one is able to discuss how risks were identified, ranked, and monitored. The student is also welcome to write about a major purchase or major decision in his or her life, such as buying a new car, buying a new home, or even the decision to return to school to earn a degree. All of these are considered projects or procurement’s that require some form of formal or informal risk review.

Remember to cite and reference any sources that were used in the project or in the decision-making process.

Part I: Background Presentation for the Op Ed
The Presentation should discuss the underlying issues/problems that shape the policy issue you have chosen to
address. Your presentation slides should include the following subtitles/pages:
• Describe your topic and why this topic is of policy concern
• Identify population affected by the topic
• Discuss impacts that this policy has on particular sub-populations
• Discuss how your topic has been dealt with in US Social Policy history – any milestone cases?
• Identify the value choices and ideology that shape the policy responses regarding your topic
• Discuss the debate about the future directions regarding the topic. Here you should understand the
point of view of those with whom you disagree
• Discuss alternative policy options that have been proposed to address your topic
• Discuss briefly budget issues related to the policy
• APA style reference list on the last page
This is not an opinion piece but a research presentation. The presentation will explore the issue from many
angles. From your presentation, the audience should not know the point of view of the presenter. The
presenter is demonstrating that he/she has an understanding of the issue which will later be addressed in the
written Op Ed (Part II). This presentation should be about 10-15 minutes. The presenter must include
appropriate in-text citations and references whenever needed.
Part II: Final draft of Op Ed
The writer will take a position on a topic related to the course and argue it in a concise and convincing way. For
the Op Ed, it is important that the writer has a point of view, that the point of view be defended by appropriate
data and research, and that the writer have a clear idea as to the audience that is to be addressed. The Op Ed
will be no more than 750 words. The student should read letters and Op Ed articles in a major national
newspaper such as the New York Times, the Washington Post or the Wall Street Journal. References to recent
research very much strengthen the writing. In order to improve that writing and to develop a sense of audience,
each piece should be edited by at least two readers prior to submitting the final version.

American Diversity

In Kozol, page 133 (roughly – this will change with different printings), a principal discusses the racial difference in schools and justice. For this paper, please interpret and discuss this quote as it relates to the different types of diversity we have discussed so far.
“The United States now has, in many black administrators of the public schools, precisely the defeated overseers it needs to justify this terrible immiseration. It is a tradition that goes back at least 300 years. A few of us are favored. They invite us to a White House ceremony and award us something – a ‘certificate of excellence’ – for our achievement. – Dee Loit is a tax consultant for three different clients, A, B, and C, all of whom are NZ residents. He asks you to look into the income tax

implications for each of these three clients.

Client A (an individual) holds shares with a cost price of $30,000 in an overseas company (not in Australia; market value is $40,000 on 31 March 2016

and $50,000 on 31 March 2017).

Client B (a company) holds shares with a cost price of $40,000 in an overseas company (not in Australia; market value is $50,000 on 31 March 2016 and

$60,000 on 31 March 2017). During the year ended 31 March 2017, Client B sold 2,000 shares of the overseas company for $4,000. Apart from this sale,

there were no other sales or purchases made.

Client C is a complying trust (set up by Chuck in 2010 for the benefit of his children), which has a portfolio of shares costing $100,000, comprising

$55,000 in Australian listed company shares (market value on 31 March 2016 is $63,000 and on 31 March 2017 is $64,000), and $45,000 in two UK listed

companies’ shares, Axee PLC and Baxee PLC.

Additional information about Axee PLC and Baxee PLC are as follows:

• Axee PLC: market value on 31 March 2016 is $60,000 and on 31 March 2017 is $65,000. C bought another 500 shares for $4,000 on 24 June 2016.

• Baxee PLC: market value on 31 March 2016 is $38,000 and on 31 March 2017 is $27,000. C sold 2,000 shares for $8,000 which originally cost $3,000 two

years ago.

All three clients have no other investments apart from these shareholdings and all shares were bought in 2010 (apart from the additional 500 Axee PLC

shares as detailed above). Their respective shareholdings in the foreign companies are all less than 10%.

4.1 Behavioral Trauma Transmission; The Social Learning Theory; And Resilience
A great debate looms concerning“nature vs nurture.”And such as it is, it becomes ever apparent in the understanding of the effects of ‘trauma from generations before.’ There’s no easy answer, but we can all agree that both nature (genetics) and (nurture) play a pivotal role in transgenerational trauma.
Adults with a history of trauma have certain behaviors, symptoms, and interactions that clearly differ from those who may not have that same history. For example, someone with a trauma history may stay up very late at night because of insomnia. They cower when someone raises their hand (even when not to hit). People with sexual trauma histories may be more-crass, and educate their children differently about sex. Survivors of trauma may also be highly protective of their children while others may be very aloof.
Let’s take an example of a woman who has survived sexual trauma growing up. It’s time for her child’s first birthday party sleep over. She may refuse to let her child go to the party. She may call her child several times during the party to assure that they are ok. Maybe, she will come early to pick the child up. In this situation what does the child learn? We can project that the child will be wary of new places and experiences, less likely to be adventurous or spontaneous, and might avoid friendships in order to avoid the anxiety of being invited to go somewhere. The child learns this all without the mother even mentioning her history of sexual trauma.
