Assessment briefing:
The proposal is a critical part of the assessment that must be submitted in order for you to pass the module. In the proposal, you will declare the area of interest you intend to explore in the final dissertation, and outline how you intend to go about it. Research questions, methodologies, and time management should feature in the proposal, as well as any other considerations that you feel are relevant.We will think about issues relating to your proposal throughout our time together in semester 1, giving you time to reflect upon and refine your ideas before assessment 2 is submitted. The module leader will read and mark your proposal on the basis of the technical assessment criteria outlined below. Once you have submitted the proposal, you will be expected to stick to the broad title and the general topic when you come to write the dissertation itself.

The proposal is particularly important, because it is the basis upon which your dissertation supervisor will be assigned. Your supervisor, chosen for having in-depth insight relevant to your chosen subject, may advise you to finesse or modify your ideas somewhat, even if the module leader has already approved them. This may be because your supervisor has a more developed understanding of the issues that you wish to explore. Your supervisor may guide you through a number of documented discussions to arrive at a submission that satisfies your interests and our need for academic rigour. Despite any possible tweaks and changes, however, it is expected that you will not deviate radically or entirely from the topic suggested in your proposal.

The proposal must be approximately one side of A4 paper and should include the following:

1. The proposed title of your dissertation;

2. A brief outline of the areas that you intend to cover in the dissertation, including the key research questions you wish to address;

3. A note on your proposed methodology and its suitability for your project;

4. An indication (where relevant) of the primary sources (magazines, television programmes, films, CDs etc) that you intend to use

5. A schedule of work – what you propose to do and the date by which you will have completed it

Assessment criteria:
The proposal will be marked on:
• Evidence of independent preparatory research;
• Ability to articulate an appropriate research question or set of research questions;
• Knowledge and understanding of which methodological approachesmay be appropriate for the chosen topic;
• The clear presentation of your work, together with evidence of careful editing and proofing (including accurate and consistent referencing).

Business Information system assignment

Aim:
In the first assignment you created a SwimLane diagram to show the As-Is business processes for Zucchero Pty. Ltd
and an Excel spreadsheet with graphs to show their statistics for 2014. Your role was to gather information, analyse
the information and portray this information in a business report for the General Manager (Ms Franka Spencer) to help
her understand the company’s current processes and recent statistics.
In this assignment (assignment two), you will take on a more strategic role for Zucchero. You are expected to
demonstrate skills in analysing and forecasting growth or decline in an Excel spreadsheet created by you for this
purpose. You will also be expected to demonstrate research and written skills in responding to specific queries raised
by the General Manager and finally, you will be asked to make recommendations combining an analysis of your
spreadsheet and your research.
NOTE: you do not need to have successfully completed assignment one in order to undertake assignment two.
Like all units you study, incomplete assessments often result in a steeper learning curve for later assessments.
Therefore any requests for a solution to assignment one is not necessary and will not be granted.
ZUCCHERO PTY LTD – Fictitious case study scenario
Background
Recap: Zucchero Pty. Ltd. was founded in 1959 in Grafton, New South Wales by Luigi Dolce, a former Cane Sugar
farmer. He moved away from farming when he started a mill and refinery to process the sugar from local cane sugar
farmers. His business flourished over the years and has grown into a multi-million dollar company with a strong
penetration in the Australian market, and a developing export business. Not only does Zucchero produce a large range
of sugar products such as raw sugar, white sugar, brown sugar, icing sugar etc, but also golden syrup and treacle.
The operational information required to run the company, such as sales trends, distributor information, promotional
information and so on, are not always documented well with some key information known only to a few senior
employees. Although the company has a website it only includes basic information such as contact details and product
types so it is unclear whether this website generates any new business. In fact, Zucchero uses very little marketing and
the new General Manager, Franka Spencer, believes more can be done in this area.
In order to maintain a competitive edge and see Zucchero flourish, Franka needs to make strategic decisions based on
future projections. She has asked you to provide the following information in the form of a business report (with
academic references):
– responses to queries which investigates contemporary issues in technology and business (refer Task B)

A career that interests you as a potential career choice for yourself
A career in which you are deeply interested, even though you do not intend to pursue it as your own vocation
for example, a student whose family has a strong history in law enforcement or the military might choose that topic even if the student did not personally intend to enter the military or pursue a career in law enforcement
An area of intellectual inquiry and engagement that interests you deeply, perhaps an area to pursue in graduate study rather than a “career,” per se
for example, a specialization in psychology or a research area in physics
An artistic pursuit or skill area that interests you significantly as a hobby and that you wish to explore in depth through reading and research

Your research paper in this class will address a topic of personal interest and significance to you. Your first task is to brainstorm ideas for topics and for possible angles on one or more topics.
To reiterate, one requirement—and a key to a successful paper—is that
the topic you explore must relate to you personally in a significant way.
Another key to a successful paper:
The topic you explore must be one you wish to learn more about.
If you are not open to new ideas about your topic, or if you are convinced that you know enough to write as an authority on the topic without exploring new ideas, then your paper is guaranteed to run into trouble.

SOURCES OF INFORMATION
You will use information from at least SEVEN different sources in your paper. The seven sources must include at least one scholarly journal article, one book, one Web source, and one non-scholarly periodical article (newspaper or magazine); you must also conduct one personal (face-to face, telephone, postal mail, or email) interview.
Use at least ONE scholarly journal article. Older journal articles are often just fine, depending on the topic. If you are considering the use of an older article and are not sure of its viability, just ask. Scholarly journal articles may be in print or electronic form. If in doubt whether a source is scholarly, ask me, a librarian, or a consultant at the Writing Center.
Use at least ONE book. E-books count as books. So do printed books. So do book chapters. (No, you need not locate an entire book devoted to your topic.) You may find a book about water recreation, one chapter of which is devoted to kayak fishing in the Keys. If you are writing about saltwater sportfishing and you find useful information in the book chapter about kayak fishing in the Keys, you may count the source as your book.
Use at least ONE source found online via the Web (e.g., through a Google search). This source need not be scholarly, but it must be credible. Do not cite Wikipedia. Do not use any source for which you cannot identify the publisher/sponsor.
Use at least ONE non-scholarly periodical article—that is, an article from a newspaper or magazine. You may use a printed copy or may use an article found online at a magazine or newspaper website. This must be a dated article.
You must conduct at least ONE personal interview with someone who is an authority on your topic; that authority may be established through formal education, through experience in the field, or through some combination of those and other factors. You may conduct this interview in person, by telephone, or by email.
In addition to the above five sources, you must use an additional two sources in your paper. The type of source you choose for these two citations is up to you—a book, a DVD, a pamphlet, or a radio broadcast, for example.
If you are not sure what kind of source material you have found, show it to me or to a librarian. We will tell you how to classify the source.
To review, your paper will cite at least seven sources total, including
at least one scholarly source

at least one Web-based source
at least one non-scholarly periodical article

LENGTH
Your research paper will be 1000-2500 words. Aim for about 3-6 pages. (Note: This assignment sheet is about 1650 words.) Type the Word Count at the end of your paper’s text (before the Works Cited page). The Word Count will include all the TEXT of your paper—NOT your heading, NOT your title, NOT the Works Cited page.
You may NOT fall short of the minimum number of words; if so, you will earn a failing grade regardless of the merit of your paper’s content or the beauty of its style. If you exceed the maximum number of words, your paper should show evidence of being tightly woven and carefully reviewed. In other words, you’d better need the extra space in order to bring your absolutely brilliant paper to its natural conclusion.
In addition to the required 1000-2500 words, you will include a Works Cited page. Your Works Cited page is NOT included in the word count.
Do not include a title page. Secure the pages by stapling them in the upper left-hand corner. Format your document according to MLA style, using a 12-point font with serifs (like Times New Roman or Cambria), 1” margins, etc. Please note directions below for submitting the final copy.
Cite quoted material and information that you gather from outside sources and include in your paper. With very few exceptions, you should limit the length of quoted passages to fewer than three lines. Why? With rare exceptions, this paper is too short for block quotes.
You may use headings in addition to your title, but use them wisely. Headings do not take the place of solid organization. You may use graphics including photos, charts, cartoons, and the like. These items will NOT count toward your total 1000-2500 words.

From the choices provided below, select a jazz musician for your paper of 600 to 800 words. You will be writing about the historic jazz style represented by this musician, as well as his or her individual performance style. An abundance of choices will allow you to write with genuine enthusiasm about one of your favorites. (Please note that we have excluded Miles Davis and John Coltrane from the list–they are simply too popular to include on the list.)

For the musician:

discuss the general characteristics of the historic jazz style;
describe the individual stylistic characteristics for which the performer is known;
select one piece that features a notable performance and provide your observations from listening to the piece;
provide a conclusion that offers insight into the artistry and significance of the piece and performer you have selected.
This assignment is an extension of the work you have been doing on the discussion boards. Topics questions can serve to guide your own investigation of the piece you have selected.

The one caveat is to make sure that you select a recording that is not assigned listening–be it recordings on the lesson pages, the discussion boards, or on the Unit listening lists. As far as that goes, there are several more lessons before the end of the semester. Security is not absolute, lets start there. In spite of security’s best intentions, sometimes bad things happen. I have been the security advisor for the Newtown CT. BOE since the tragedy of 12/14/12. This comment is one I repeat as often as possible to parents and faculty when visiting
