The Frankenstein Application Essay
Literary works like Frankenstein explore the “human condition” or experiences that humans encounter. Now, you will choose ONE of these topics and explore it using secondary resources to learn more about the novel and its relevant social topics. You might find information about social issues in familiar sources such as magazines, newspapers, or social science journals. Make sure your sources are credible—you do not want a random website or an encyclopedic website such as Wikipedia.
Your sources will preferably be a scholarly ones. Here are some ideas of places where you might find appropriate sources for this assignment:
Your local library
Your thesis statement and paper must address both the literary qualities and the social issues as you evaluate the novel, Frankenstein. However, keep in mind, your essay does not have to answer ALL of the questions listed under each topic. Only answer the questions you feel are the most relevant to the thesis statement you choose. Develop your essay so it has a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ensure that each of your claims is supported with valid evidence from the novel, Frankenstein, and at least three other credible external sources.
You have several options for this assignment:
Option #1: Can science go too far?
There is an ongoing battle between faith or spirituality and science that has been active even before the time of Mary Shelley. What are some of the dilemmas she addresses that are still important today? What are some of the ethical questions she brings up regarding the scientific definition of life and death? What does she illustrate about the power science has to blur the line between life and death? What is a current news item that is similar to this issue?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address ethical the issues of science and/or faith for audiences, regardless of when they read the novel?”
Option #2: Discovery
Both Frankenstein and Walton are trying to discover something important to them. What parts of their real lives drive them to discovery? Does that drive still exist today? While we’ve mapped the globe, are there still geographical places for people to explore? In science, are people still trying to discover the meaning of life, how to save life, and how to defeat death? What methods do they use? Are there better ways to accomplish these goals than others? What are some of today’s motivations for discovery?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address human discovery as a theme?”
Option #3: Personal Perception
It could be argued that the creature did not consider itself a monster and didn’t do awful things until people treated him like a monster. What are some real world instances in which people’s actions could be a reaction to abuse from others? Who do you feel is accountable in these situations? Why?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address the effect of peer perceptions on personal development?”
Option #4: Nature vs. Nurture
The creature argues that had someone properly guided him, he would not have been so wretched. Frankenstein argues that the creature was evil to begin with, so it would have been useless to teach him at all. What are some current debates – especially in education – where these kinds of arguments still arise? How much of behavior do you think is based on nature (how a person IS) and how much is based on nurture (what a person LEARNS or EXPERIENCES)? What examples from the present support your opinion? What do you feel is the truth? Why?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address existing personality traits versus how a person is taught to act?”
This assignment should be at least 750 words.
Underline your thesis statement in the introductory paragraph.

Final: Creative Writing as Rhetoric
For your final major grade assignment, you’ll be writing a scene from either an original short story or personal narrative that demonstrates two or more perspectives (positive and negative) on one or more ideas you’ve encountered in Sophie’s World.
Again, your final draft should be comprised of only one scene or “a sequence of continuous action.” It should demonstrate a complete action cycle (exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution) but doesn’t have to be (shouldn’t be) an entire story. It should be more like a miniature story; you’re not trying to squeeze a novel, a five act play, or a feature length film into six to ten pages. You want to describe a tense or difficult situation and work your characters through it. Use very few adjectives and adverbs. Use figurative language: colorful verbs, metaphors, similes, personification, etc. Use dialogue. Let different characters represent different perspectives or points of view.

Sophie’s world is a book we have been reading this is not necessarily about Sophie’s World but an idea you have encountered from Sophie’s world. This is not technically an essay it is more of a story. Please provide me with some guidance on a topic before you dart the paper.

In the paper we are not citing or quoting from Sophie’s World.This paper does not need any sources.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the two graphic novels read for this course: Johnny Jihad and American Terrorist. Students will choose three (3) course topics and discuss how they are presented, whether similarly or differently, in the graphic novels.

You would devote a section of your paper to each one of these topics. Within these sections you would discuss how each topic is discussed in each graphic novel. If the topic is not specifically utilized in one of the novels (or barely discussed), then you should elaborate upon why you think it was omitted or minimized. How might discussing that topic have changed the story? Conclude your paper by summarizing your main findings and discussing, collectively, what type of picture these graphic novels present of terrorism in the 21st century.

List of course topics you can include in the paper (you must use 3 topics and apply them to both novels)
– How terrorists become radicalized/influenced
– Weapons and tactics they use
– What are their goals/intentions
– Ideology (Anarchist, left-wing, right-wing, enthonationalist or religious)
– Gender of terrorists and their role
– How does media influence terrorism and how it is used
– Impact on society
– Economic aspects of terrorism

Try to select topics that are present in both novels, for example, if both books include Islam as religion, suicide bombings as tactic and the fight against western ideology as the main goal (here you have 3 possible topics by the way) try to compare and contrast the ways each point is developed in each story and what are the main implications. Feel free to find things in common inside the topics above mentioned and develop your paper from that.

A sample research paper outline is as follows (I’m using radicalization, weapons of terrorism, and religious terrorism as reference. If you like these 3 topics, feel free to use them)

1) Introduction (Provide a thesis/statement that summarizes your findings. Introduce which topics you chose and why, name the books you are analyzing and describe how the paper will proceed.)

2) Radicalization (Compare and contrast how radicalization is presented in each text; cite specific examples)

3) Weapons of Terrorism (Compare and contrast how weapons of terrorism are presented in each text; cite specific examples)

4) Religious Terrorism (Compare and contrast how religious terrorism is presented in each text; cite specific examples)

5) Conclusion (Summarize the findings of your research and discuss what these texts say about terrorism in the 21st century. Explain how the two books relate with the topics you chose)

Important info: The only two sources you can formally use for the essay are just the two books, however, you can get as much info as you need from any source (books, internet, etc) to provide a good comparison, a clear analysis and of course demonstrate understanding. Feel free to do research about the topics you decide to develop but make sure to write the paper with your own words. When citing examples from the books, it does not have to be formal, you just have to give the example and explain from what book is the example coming.
