The purpose of completing an advanced course of study is not for you to tackle and change the entire world, but to begin your professional journey by focusing on a meaningful and targeted problem within the scope and the time frame available.
As you can see from the inverted triangle, topics are broad, issues are subcomponents of topics, and problems are specific, narrowly focused statements for investigation. As you collect more information and begin to critically analyze the topic and the issues, you must begin to synthesize information to refine your target issue to a manageable size—the problem statement. This will demand that you begin to work on the skills of synthesis and advanced academic writing.
Submit by Day 7 (of Module 1) a 2- to 3-page paper that includes the following:
• A description of the experiences and motivations that have led you to pursue an advanced graduate degree.
• An explanation of how the three topics you addressed in the Discussion relate to issues in education.
• A description of a problem related to each issue—a problem you would want to help solve.
• At least two goals you hope to accomplish as a result of obtaining your degree.
An explanation of how your pursuit of the topics you identified can enable you to become an agent of positive change. Provide specific example

1. Think of an issue that is important to you or an issue that has been in the news in Texas. I am including a list of possible topics that can be used for your assignment. Some of the ideas come from issues that I have seen in the news or are topics that are covered in the Discussion Board. Remember, these are just some examples – you may use one of these or you may use something completely different. Your topic needs to be a state issue, not a federal issue. I would rather see you cover one issue in depth then three or four issues very generally. To view news articles on Texas, click on the Texas news articles link on the left.
•Voting – ways to increase turnout; voter id
•Education – suggestions for improving the system; school funding; standardized testing; funding
•Regulation – should there be more regulation on businesses that store hazardous chemicals or on food safety

•Justice system – death penalty; reforms on sentencing; equality in the system; public defenders
•Health care – ways to improve access in Texas
•Water issues – municipalities and farmers fighting over access to water during drought; actions the state can take to ensure adequate water supply
•Revenue – ways the state or city can collect revenue; how should a budget surplus be used; should the state change the way it collects revenue

•Social issues — gay marriage, abortion, guns, etc.

2. Once you pick a topic, you need to prepare a background analysis of the issue. You will need three or more comprehensive, full-length articles from mainstream newspapers or news magazine publications. Your articles should discuss the substance of the issue, provide recent information and should consider various viewpoints. Avoid strict opinion pieces that provide a one-sided analysis of the issue. Your background analysis should include the people/groups involved in the debate, description of the conflicting viewpoints of the people/groups involved, including economic or ideological positions, and the various policy outcomes that are desired by the different participants in the debate. Including statistics or data that help explain your issue will make your analysis stronger. To help find articles, you can use the Newspaper Source available on the list of databases through the Central Texas College Library at www.ctcd.edu/academics/library or other online searches available to you. The online news source the Texas Tribune is also a good place to start.
3. The background analysis should be two to three pages (double spaced). In addition to the information from the articles, you need to draw on relevant information in the textbook to show you understand how the issue relates to topics covered in the course. Make sure you cite all the articles used and include the URL for the article.

4. Once you have completed your background analysis, you need to identify a state, county or city government official in Texas that can address your issue. Hint: US Senators and members of Congress are not state level officials. Using formal correspondence style, prepare a three-fourths to one page (single spaced) letter informing the official of your concern and offering a solution or making a request for action. Yours may be an emotional issue, but your argument must be based on reason, not just emotion. Support your position and refute opposing positions with factual information, data and well-reasoned arguments. When writing your letter, you will use information from your background analysis, but you should not just cut and paste the information from your background analysis into the letter.

5. Save the letter and background analysis as one document and submit the file through the link below.

6. This assignment is worth 100 points. The background analysis is worth 70% of the grade and the letter is worth 30%.
7. Be careful when writing your background analysis and letter that you put the information in your own words. Simply cutting and pasting information from websites is unacceptable and will result in grade of zero for the writing assignment.

In conducting this study the author conformed to the ethical rules established by Birkbeck College University of London. Specifically to not “cause any damage” (Gray, 2009:190) to companies and employees involved, the retailers analysed within this case were made anonymous and referred as Company A and Company B. For the employees, no names were used in the performance data that is collected and presented in the Appendices. Both firms in the study were informed about the aims and goals of the research and their right to refuse to be involved, ask about the projects development, obtain a copy of the paper. The firm, specifically the HR department, was also informed of their right to ask the author to interrupt the study should they wish to (Gray, 2009).

Company A: a small boutique shop, part of privately held company which offers Men and women clothing ,Shoes and accessory’s , the store received 200-300 customers daily across 500 square feet of selling space and employ 7 sales assistant and 2 managers, their yearly income is around 520,000 pouds.

Egbert lost control of the car he was driving and collided with a group of people waiting in a bus queue on Oakdale High Street.. There are a number of psychiatric injury claims which have resulted from this incident. Anna had just said goodbye to her husband Charles as he crossed the road to join the bus queue; Anna was around the corner when she heard the noise resulting from the collision. She rushed back to find Charles on the ground injured. Ismail was queuing to pick up a take away coffee further down the road and saw the car collide into the queue clearly injuring his sister Sheela. Ismail also saw his work colleague Frank injured; Frank died at the scene. Ruby was stood at the back of the queue and just managed to fling herself out of the way, narrowly avoiding injury. Anthea worked as a primary school teacher earning £40,000 a year gross but she cannot return to work; she also needs to employ house keeping assistance as she has mobility problems and is in chronic pain. Godfrey, their 5 year old son died at the scene of the accident. Their 22 year old daughter Kylie was one month away from taking her final nursing examinations and had secured a post working in a local hospital. Kylie suffered paralysis as a result of the accident and now requires constant nursing care at home and is unable to work. John’s elderly mother Ena, who had lived with the family for 6 years, was at home at the time of the accident.

Advise the family about the methodology and calculation of compensatory damages for the above losses would be approached.

Last week the tank that Bryn maintained which collected the animal manure exploded as a result of the gases which had developed leaving manure all over the conservatory and garden furniture at the back of Jason’s house.
