Artificial Intelligence

In an article, The Theory of Successful Intelligence, Robert Sternberg (1999) contends that, “Some people are intelligent and creative, but foolish. That is, they are smart but not wise.”

How does this comment fit with what Sternberg (2009) has to say in Chapter 11: Human and Artificial Intelligence, especially in reference to his own triarchic theory?

Negotiation, Bargaining, and Conflict Resolution

The video clip you will view (see below) is a scene from American
Samoa: Paradise Lost? This classic description from the 1960s is
typical of Samoan society and its traditional political leadership
system. Note the chief was related to the people he governed. The
economic exchanges in the Samoan village all were supervised by the
chief. In turn, the village chief was responsible for the welfare of
his villagers. Displays of economic distribution, such as the feast
illustrated in the video clip, were important means for demonstrating
the benevolent power of the chief. When the American government sent
leaders to oversee this island nation, there were conflict between the
traditional village system of distribution and reciprocity and the
Western notions of how the government should operate.

Assignment:
Write a 1- page case analysis in which you respond to the following questions.

How did the traditional system of chiefly power reinforce the close
knit social system of village life?

How do the values of achievement and ascription operate in opposition
in some leadership situations?

What are the implications of this case for economic and political

Domestic Violence

Domestic violence against women and children is an outcry in today’s society which should not been ignored. Women and children emerge from domestic violence with negative health effects like HIV/AIDS, malnutrition and other diseases including increased risks of infant deaths. This research seeks to address the extent of domestic violence against women and children and the above mentioned implications.

Ackerson, L.K, & Subramanian, S.V. (2008). Domestic Violence and Chronic Malnutrition among Women and Children in India. American Journal of Epidemiology, (167)10, 1188-1196.
Ackerson and Subramanian in this research article set out to establish whether there is a connection between domestic violence and the effect of malnutrition on women and children. In doing so, the authors embarked on a qualitative research study where they utilized data from the 1998-1999 Indian National Family Study. Variables used to measure malnutrition were anemia and underweight while self reported cases of domestic violence represented the exposure variable. Findings from the research study indicated that 19% of women reported domestic violence and 19.8% of the children’s mothers did the same. High levels of malnutrition were observed in women with half suffering from anemia and a third of them were underweight. Children suffered a similar fate with 70% having severe anemia, 36% were severely stunted, 17.3 were stunted and 5% were underweight. The connection between malnutrition and domestic violence arises in that domestic violence perpetrators often withhold food from their victims. The authors indicate the need to eliminate domestic violence and its direct influence to curbing malnutrition. Suggestions are also made by the authors for future research to examine other health outcomes of domestic violence against women and children.

Asling-Monemi, K., Ellsberg, M.C., Pena, R., & Persson, L.K. (2003). Violence Against Women Increases the Risk of Infant and Child Mortality: A Case-Referent Study in Nicaragua. Bull World Health Organ, (81)1, 10-16.
Unlike other impacts of domestic violence which have been widely investigated, there is little research carried out on the effects of violence against women on their offspring’s survival. The authors as such endeavor to close this gap in research by investigating this subject in a study in Nicaragua. Data used for this research emanated from a demographic database with statistics of a sample collected in rural and urban households in Leon. The potentially adverse perceptions of personality tests by applicants and their effects on the validity of the test results are discussed.
