Essay Assignment #1: Comparing Different News Vehicles
The purpose of this assignment is to compare the impact of news coming from different formats. For one particular day, observe the news on at least
three (3) of the following formats: newspaper, radio broadcast, local television broadcast, network news broadcast, or cable news broadcast, social
media feed, or an internet news site.
Things to note:
• Does there appear to be a difference in the types of stories presented by these different formats?
• Do particular formats appear more suited to presenting particular types of stories?
• Do some formats appear more amenable to sticking to the facts and others to spin or infotainment, or is this more a matter of the disposition
of the reporters and editors for the particular agency?
What to write:
1. A general description of the types of stories covered in each format. This should include:
• the range of topics covered
• techniques for directing attention at particular stories
• indications of bias by the writers
• the overall quality of the information provided – was the organization reasonably easy to follow, was the information presented clearly and
provided in-depth or as “infotainment,” and did the reporting appear credible and balanced?
2. Analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each news format for covering politics. What did each format of news do well, and what was
problematic?

• Minimum 500 words, maximum of 1000 words
• Clarity and organization of writing will be considered in grading. Should have an introduction, body, conclusion, and transitions between them.
• Any sources used should be properly cited using APA style format.
