Steps
1. Use all available resources to understand the US federal HITECH Act of 2009, including web sites.
2. Consider the following scenario has happened at the hypothetical Central Health Care organization: a nurse complied with a family’s request to send the patient records of their daughter (who is a minor) to another family member who would share those records with another physician to obtain a second opinion about a serious procedure. The email with patient records attached was sent from the organization’s email server to a member of the (minor) patient’s family. This activity was discovered during an internal HIPAA audit of email records some three months after the email was sent.
2. Using a Microsoft Word document, prepare a policy statement that this organization can put in place to avoid this violation in the future. The policy statement should be a single paragraph, typically ranging from 50 to 300 words.
3. In 250 words or more, explain why you drafted the policy statement in this manner, e.g. what you did not include, what you would hope to accomplish with the new policy, etc.
