Tips and Tricks for Literature Searches

Literature Reviews: Reviewing and Critiquing Research

You have probably seen television programs or movies set in a court of law. Or, perhaps you have served on a jury or have been a plaintiff or defendant yourself. In the legal setting, conclusions are only said to be reached when the rules and constructs related to evidence are followed. Critical thinking and evidentiary rules protect the parties of a case; even if a conclusion seems foregone, it cannot be reached legitimately without a certain degree of evidence and conclusiveness.

Research follows similar practices. Whether a research study is qualitative, quantitative, or uses mixed methodology, it is incumbent upon the critical thinker to assess the assumptions, procedures, and conclusions reached. In the larger view, that critical thinker must examine a given study in light of similar studies or studies on related topics in order to understand the larger field of study and the literature that supports it.

This week, you will examine how researchers use literature reviews, as well as the purpose and development of a concise article abstract.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this week, you will be able to:
•Evaluate the use of literature in a scholarly research article
•Organize theories and concepts derived from literature into a coherent vista
•Evaluate a research article abstract
•Produce a research article abstract that complies with doctoral-level practices
•Apply advanced resource searching techniques
Tips and Tricks for Literature Searches

Time is a precious commodity, and as a doctoral student you are keenly aware of its value. You are expected to be thorough and exhaustive in your search for academic resources. These expectations don’t only exist so you can avoid duplicating existing research; they also empower and prepare you to contribute to the foundations of thinking and practice in your chosen area of interest. One key to meeting these expectations is to develop proficiency in online searching.

Share your tips and suggestions for finding relevant academic literature. These tips may relate to navigating particular electronic databases, applying general searching techniques, constructing search term queries, broadening or narrowing your initial search results, finding monographs and other resources, or other topics.

Annotated Bibliography

Create a list of a minimum of nine references for books, articles, and documents that relate to the topic that you submitted in Unit III for the Research Paper due in Unit VIII. Each reference must be followed by the annotation, a brief descriptive, and an evaluative paragraph.
The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. Annotations are descriptive and critical; they expose the author’s point of view, clarity, appropriateness of expression, and authority. Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research.
 First, locate and record citations to books, periodicals, and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.
 Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article. Include one or more sentences that:
o evaluate the authority or background of the author,
o comment on the intended audience,
o compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, and
o explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic.
 Your annotations should be at least 100 words in length.
Reference each book, article, or document using APA format.

Comparison Matrix Assignment

General Requirements:

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
You are not required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.
Directions:

Empirical research is the foundation to scholarly research and scholarly writing. An empirical article is defined as one that reports actual results of a research study. The article will include a description of the study, an introduction, a research question, an explanation of the study’s methodology, a presentation of the results of the study, and a conclusion that discusses the results and suggests topics for further study. This assignment will help you locate and identify empirical research studies.
The Comparison Matrix contains a table with three columns and six rows. The columns are titled Article 1, Article 2, and Article 3, and the rows are titled Title, Persistent GCU Library Link, Purpose of the Study, Research Question(s), Sample Population(s), and Limitations. You will see that the appropriate information from Article 1 has been included.
Use the Article 2 persistent link as provided above and in the Comparison Matrix to locate and read Article 2.
After reading Article 2, provide the appropriate information in the cells in the Article 2 column of the Comparison Matrix.
Go to the GCU library. Use the “Find Journal Articles” search feature found on the home page of the GCU library to locate an empirical article in your field of interest. Use the Empirical Research Checklist to determine whether a study is empirical. This will be Article 3 in the Comparison Matrix.
After locating and reading the empirical article you found, provide the appropriate information in the cells in the Article 3 column of the Comparison Matrix.

Validity and Test Development

A review paper describes many published research studies on a particular topic. For this project, you will be critiquing an article that is a review paper (Mitchell, 2012) related to external validity of psychological research. External validity refers to the generalizability of results of a study and how well those results will hold up outside a laboratory setting in the real world.
Complete a three- to four-page paper that summarizes the main points and findings. Describe it in a scholarly (using critical thinking) manner, but also in a way that someone from outside the area can understand. Be sure to include the reference of the paper in your submission.

research paper

I should be obliged if you would undertake a critical evaluation of the following statement:

“Structural reforms have the potential to reinvigorate growth in the euro area in both the short and long run”

The material you should use are (i will provide the links here) :
Research paper 1: Promoting structural reforms in the euro area: what for and how? page 10 to page 15 (basically Research paper 2: structural reforms and long-run growth in the euro area page 4 to page 5 (starting from the part which is under the heading Reinforcing Supply capacity until the paragraph ends.

In addition please use one more research paper that you should find and use in this critical evaluation.

I require 2 pages fully referenced with a bibliography.
I specifically require that the first page be a critical evaluation of the two research papers i provide and the second page to be about the third additional research paper you found. ( use 3 references please minimum)
I require you to provide me with a copy of the additional research paper that you will use, otherwise the critical evaluation is of no use to me. This is very important.
