8.What recommendations would you make to the management of the SkyWest,Inc. to strengthen the company’s competitive position and improve its financial performance…..

Answer:

A number of external factors have affected the US regional airline industry. Most of these factors are detrimental. The prevailing economic times are hard, forcing major stakeholders in the industry to look for better strategies to cope. One major issue is the increased and the fluctuating cost of fueling the jets. This forms a bulk of the expenses of the regional airlines. According to Platzer (2009), there has been a rapid decline in the number of planes ordered by regional airlines (p. 6) owing to the cost of acquiring funds to purchase new and more effective jets. Most regional airlines are still recovering from the economic recession that was with us a few years ago. New regulations have been put in place which require the airlines to comply with, further increasing costs incurred. Enhanced security has become a priority following terror attacks. This has resulted in long checks for customers, a bother which has made a lot of clients reluctant to travel because of the hustle involved. The entrance of new manufacturers of jets into the market could turn out to be beneficial to the industry. We might have better planes at a lower cost.

These economic factors have not spared the national and international airlines, with most of them having to drop some of their flights. New collaborations with regional airlines have become necessary.

A five forces analysis of the industry indicates that most of the factors are relatively stable. The strongest forces are the supplier and buyer powers. Though SkyWest has reliable suppliers for its jets, factors such as the cost of fuel and maintenance costs are key concerns, especially for the older jets. SkyWest faces stiff competition from the existing airlines such as Southwest, Frontier and Midwest airlines. New players and substitute problems are the least likely forces to affect the industry. It is very hard for new entrants in the market to prosper. Customers do not prefer to use rail, road and water transport as substitutes to air travel due to the many inconveniences. Air travel is convenient, fast, safe and quite affordable.

A variety of factors are responsible for the changes being experienced in the regional airline industry. One such force is the difficult economic times. Major national airlines have been forced to abandon some flights, thus creating more room for growth of the regional airlines as they attempt to cope with the expanding market. In a bid to cut down on costs, national and global airlines have entered into agreements with regional airlines. The political climate has also changed how the industry conducts business. According to “USA today” (2009), “aviation industry experts said the changing conditions reflect the broad restructuring of the industry after Sept. 11, 2001, when air travel dropped sharply and major airlines began pairing with regional ones.” (para 4)This reflects how terrorist activities affected the industry. These changes have impacted strongly on individual airlines, with some having to close done operations while creating opportunities for others to team up with global airlines. Most had to find coping strategies, as the impact was apparent across the whole industry.

The key factors that determine the success of companies in the regional industry include the ability to utilize economies of scale, capacity to enter into agreements that benefit both parties, the capability to adapt promptly to adverse outcomes and investing on strategies to fight off the stiff competition. Strategic and contingency plans are essential for success.

SkyWest’s strategy is to increase its customer coverage base by entering into partnerships with other major airlines while acquiring new operations. It has contractual agreements with United Airlines, Delta Airlines and US Airways. It also recently acquired ExpressJet Airline. The strategy is to cut down on costs while bridging the regional gap. Having contracts with large couriers diversifies its risk. It does not have to depend on one big client. Rather, it has many reliable customers. Its strategy is meant to establish the company as the number one regional airline in the United States. Its customers can go to more destinations at reasonably fair prices.

SkyWest greatest capability is its attractiveness to global airways. Its capacity to maintain a variety of well maintained and constantly upgraded aircrafts enabled it to be the choice of major airlines seeking partnerships. Its pilots work on a non union contract since its inception, a fact which gives the company a strong advantage. Its major weakness is its history with flight cancellation, delays and bad luggage handling. The delays could be attributed to large aircrafts being given priority in landing as opposed to the small airplanes. Contracts with global airlines undermine the independence that regional airlines would desire. Flight schedules and landing privileges are also affected. Its market opportunities are enhanced. Threats, especially in form of competitors, are rife.

An analysis of the company’s financial reports shows that the recent acquisition of ExpressJet Airline has brought significant changes in its operations. According to “SkyWest Inc News Release” (2011),”during the quarter ended September 30, 2011, SkyWest experienced a reduction of approximately $41.4 million in pretax earnings compared to the same period the previous year.” (para. 2) This reduction in profit was largely attributable to its acquisition of ExpressJet Airline, a move which increased its operating costs. The company had to bear a loss from the new acquisition. Given the circumstances, this is not good, but it is not too shabby either.

My recommendation is that the company should prepare for future acquisitions more vigorously. I believe the company did not fully consider the implications of the action. This has resulted in a big blow, which might be difficult to recover from. Reaching out to other airlines and creating more contractual agreements will strengthen its position as a regional airway.

1.0 Introduction

The chapter analyses the methodology to be used in the study of Thai beer consumption in theUK. It starts by justifying the research design before discussing relevant theories for this research. SWOT analysis and marketing mix are the main theories being used by the two companies in theUKmarkets. Both primary and secondary data will be obtained from Thai beer consumers and beer ads. The findings are expected to benefits beer takers, government and beer producing companies in their efforts to explore theUKmarkets and grow their business.

2.0 I Research Design and justification

This is a descriptive research designed to determine factors behind the success of Singha and Chang beer in theUK. The choice of this research design is appropriate for qualitative and quantitative primary and secondary data that will be collected from consumers and beer producing companies, (Choice of Research. n.d). These beers are manufactured inThailandand have recently gained popularity in theUKmarket which prompted this research.

This research is necessary because it attempts to explain reasons for the increased consumption of Thai beers in theUK. The research findings will be relevant to the public, for they know their consumption rate of beers, for the government for it will help in making laws and policies that are needed to regulate beer consumption in the country, to beer exporting companies, this research will provide them with information to make necessary adjustments towards improving their performances.

3.0 Theory and approaches

Different theories of marketing beer products have been documented which will form the basis for this research. The swot analysis will be used to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats being faced by the two beer exporting companies in theUKmarkets. The strengths of producing company will be analyzed which includes, strong financial position through increased revenues generated over time, established brand name in the UK and the world through its associations with popular football clubs in the world which has helped build sign value for the two beers, use of technological methods in marketing process, quality of staff and distribution chain for the products used by the two beers in the UK, (Webb, 2002).

Comparison of company weaknesses in terms of the number of branches, ability to compete with each other, company structure and bureaucracy in decision making in the parent company among others. The paper also analyses the available opportunities for the products by evaluating market availability in the UK, legal and political condition, technological availability in new territories, sporting events which can be used to develop sign value and availability and use of social media network in the country.

The study evaluates threats being experienced by the two companies such as poor economic condition due to global recession, harsh policies and regulations on beer consumption in theUK, high taxation rates on products from outside European Union markets among others threats being experienced by the two exporting companies.

Marketing Mix theories will be analyzed to determine the ability of two companies to effectively respond to the marketing needs in ofUK. Pricing strategies will be analyzed to determine whether the two companies can easily respond to pricing needs of the market at any particular time. However, the companies are unlikely to engage in pricing because it is presumed that people consume beer to gain status.

Promotional strategy will be evaluated to determine how the two firms are building brand name in theUKto sign value. Different promotional strategies are employed including the use of social network, sponsoring soccer clubs and print media campaigns. Product strategies such as product innovations and differentiation will be evaluated to analyze how the two companies are using them in theUKmarket and how it contributes to beer consumption. Place strategy, the researcher will examine the distribution chain used by the companies to get their goods and services to consumers.

The impact of sign value on beer consumption in theUK. Research will use primary data which will be collected using both open and closed ended questions specifically designed to statistical information necessary for this study. These will be administered to the respondents by the researcher together with his assistants to various consumers of the two brands of beers in theUK. A sample of respondents will be randomly selected from different bars and consuming joints using probabilistic sampling.

Research hypothesis of this study will be to evaluate variables to be analyzed by the researcher. The first hypothesis determines the influence of Brand recognition through sign value to the consumption of Singha and Chang beer in theUK. Under this, we examine various ways the two Beer producing Companies have used to establish their brand in theUKmarket by examining their promotional strategy. The companies are engaged in ads and sponsoring ofUKpremier league teams as away of building the sign value of the beers inUK. The sign values framework is developed from jean Baudrilland which argues that people consume goods and services to differentiate themselves from others and gain status represented by the goods they consume.

The research aims to prove this hypothesis that people consume beer too gain status attached to the products and services using famous brands of beer produced in Thai, which have recently gained popularity in the UK. It also analyses different status attached to these two beers and how these status are attached. The second hypothesis determines reasons behind general consumption of beer in theUKusing Singha and Chang beer. The research findings are intended to answer the predetermined research questions of the study.

4.0. II Data collection and sources

This research is a case survey of two Thai beers and uses both primary and secondary data. Primary data will be collected by observation, studying of beer advertisements and by the use of questionnaires. The focus will be on two brands of beer, Chang and Singha. This data will be collected at places of beer consumption such as restaurants, bars and supermarkets selling the two brands of Thai beer, Singha and Chang where observations and interviews will be conducted to obtain views on reasons for increased consumption of the two brands. Samples of study will be chosen using probabilistic random sampling of places of consumption and the sampling of respondents.

In an effort to capture sign value behind consumption of these products in theUK, various advertisements from magazines, newspapers and internet will be sampled to obtain information on how they contribute towards enhancing product sign value. The study will finalize by investigating different factors influencing consumption of two brands of Thai beer in theUK. The questionnaires will be structured to capture all the elements of study using both open and closed ended questions. Likert point rating will be used to rate the respondents perception of factors contributing to Thai beer consumption in theUK.

Sampling of respondents will be done in two stages. First, stratified sampling technique will be employed to arrive at the venues of beer consumption. After identifying the sampling venues, random sampling of beer consumers will be conducted and questionnaires will be administered to the sampled respondents who will be required to answer the questions. Quality of measurement instrument for the research is checked during initial analysis of data and should follow the one in the literature and reliability test of measurement instrument are conducted before final analysis of collected data.

The research sample will constitute people of all ages, gender and geographic locations of theUK. Secondary data will be obtained from reliable sources and should constitute the subject matter of this research, which is sign value of the two Thai beers which has gained popularity in theUKmarket. Information on pricing will be used to assess whether price variations of two Thai beers inUKresulted in changes in consumption. A clear examination of advertising trends of the two products and customers’ response will be examined to asses the impact of advertisement on beer consumption in theUK, (Kruma, 2010).

Finally an evaluation of changes in product quality, packaging and tastes for two types of Thai beers with their corresponding impact on sales volume will be used to asses whether changes in tastes have any significant impact on beer consumption in theUKmarket. However, data collection exercise may be hampered by lack of cooperation from respondents since they may be drunk and give out false information which may compromise the results.

Collection of data in bars and restaurants may require permission and escort from law enforcers because of the likely dangers one encounters when dealing with drunkards. One may also need to be psychological prepared to encounter resistance and other forms of abuse while dealing with such kind of respondents.

5.0 III. Data analysis and presentation

This paper analyzes factors influencing high consumption of Thai beer inUK, by analyzing the contributions of sign value, price and taste of beers. It uses both primary and secondary information obtained from beer consumers and beer advertisements. The information obtained will be analyzed using the statistical program for social sciences. Data results will also be presented in form of graphs, percentages, mean, mode and other forms of statistical presentation.

Data cleaning will involve inspection of questionnaires during data entry stage to determine the response rate. Initial analysis will be conducted before data cleaning to establish data quality using different statistical methods such as frequency counts, air tables, descriptive statistics, normality and associations’ methods of statistical analysis whose results will be compared with the results of final data analysis. However the method of analysis during cleaning process will be the same method to be used in the final analysis of this research. This helps to determine whether the cleaning process did interfere with crucial information for the research.

Secondary information from media and internet advertisement will be analyzed using qualitative methods of analysis from which researcher’s judgment will be used to determine the extend of sign value contained in advertisements for the two brands of Thai beer. Stability tests will be carried out to determine the reliability of data results. The research equation will consists of beer consumption as the independent variable and sign values, beer price and beer tastes as the dependent variables. The interdependency between the dependent variables will be analyzed using t- statistics.

Operation Plan
Discuss the importance of Medicheck…………………

Business location
While the team gathered information about the usage of Medicheck, through out the country, it was noted that the customers wanted a central place or specific places they could gain access to the products faster. Furthermore, it became clear that the business had to be set in a major city where most people were in need of constant reminders to take their medicine due to the nature of their demanding jobs. Additionally, since the device could be accessed via their smart phones, the distributor outlets will be located in areas where most of the populations have smart phones in order to capitalize on profits. With the company having its headquarters near its business outlets, customers will have the ease of walking into the company to offer suggestions or critic the product at their own convenience. This way, adjustments proposed and problems noted by customers will be dealt with swiftly and expeditiously.
Being a new product the location of the business meets the criteria of the company because the company needs to keep customer relation close to ensure any problems are dealt with. Additionally the location of the company will allow the company to have plenty of space to handle more customers. Furthermore, the company’s location will enhance easier marketing and also allow the company to construct unique business hours so that all the customers can be served. The company will also cut down on its advertising costs.
Information Technology
MediCheck services will rely significantly on technology as technology has proved to be vital in today’s businesses (William, 1998). The primary technology will be the Smartphone which can be equated to a personal digital assistant in the current generation. Recently it has been found that most people own a Smartphone, the futures of a Smartphone enable people program their daily activities and hence form an essential part of the strategy of the company in marketing MediCheck (McNaughton, 2011). The software in Smartphones is open source and the company’s technicians can help in making adjustments to programs according to a customers needs.
The company too, will have to invest in the latest technology to be able to keep in track with the requirements of customers. Therefore the key department of the company will be the ecommerce and the IT infrastructure.
The company will employ the use of a website to serve as marketing, sales, information, communication and collaboration tool (Frank, 1997). This way the customers can request for additional information and even request more services or order for services online (Importance of Websites in Modern Business, n.d). The company will also create an online payment mechanism as it has been noted currently that most of technology’s business generates most of its revenue from online sells (Paunov &Vickery, 2004). Therefore a business website will form an integral part of the company’s business model. Furthermore availability of a website boosts the credibility of a company, while at the same time increasing efficiency in service delivery.
Manufacturing
The Company sources most of its manufacturing product domestically as well as China (most of the products come from China). This is to minimize costs and therefore allow production flexibility and eradicating long shipping times.
A proper audit has been carried out on the Chinese products and they have been verified as capable and of best quality to manufacture the products associated with MediCheck. The company has had to verify the quality of the Chinese products because currently the company is using ISO 9002 factory approved assure consistency. The company chosen in China has got all near Hong Kong port and therefore this makes exportation convenient.
A prototype of the equipment to be used has already been sent to China to assure us of accuracy in production and also help in prize estimation and also help in determining pricing, tooling time, shipping and production.
The product however, doesn’t need fresh tooling to create other custom moulds. The company has signed a contract with the Chinese company and it is clear that our company owns all the rights, interest and title to the moulds thereof, and the moulds are to be used specifically for our company’s products and orders and that we reserve revocation orders on the moulds at any given period as the company deems fit.

1.0 Social Welfare in the 20th Century and Beyond

1.1 Introduction
This review will address the social change and will also look at how the social change has affected the economic and political system with time. It will show the importance of studying social change because it will help us understand many topics which will explain the success rate and the rate of failure in globalization, in the political systems, development and economic growth and democratisation. The ideas behind these concepts are all rooted in the idea of social change.

1.2 Research Topic
The single event that has affected the life of most people in UK and the Western civilisation for that matter has got to be the social welfare schemes. The scheme has been important to particularly in elevation of poverty and provision of public education on issues related to the well being of an individual. Additionally it has been used to bridge the gap of poverty that exists in society by making sure that the basic necessities are provided to the public. The topic has been chosen because of the sensitivity surrounding the issue. The social welfare has served the Western countries and has been the subject of envy by third world or developing countries. However, the Western governments are on record expressing their dissatisfaction with the program. In fact they are thinking of eradicating the program altogether. However, should this be the case? To try answering this question, this paper will try by looking at the history of the social welfare and its present in a bid to try speculating its future.
1.3 Documentary sources used
To achieve the objectives of this research paper, documentary sources were used. In particular: I used the book Family, Dependence, and the Origins of the Welfare State by Pederson, and also the book Social Policy in the United States: Future Possibilities in Historical Perspective by Skocpol Theda. The first book is important as it explains the history of the social welfare particularly during the 20th century which is the main period under investigation. The second book is also important as it tries to explain the future or social welfare particularly during a time when the importance of social welfare is under heavy criticism.
Most of the information relied upon for this paper was found from documentary sources. Social researches usually need in-depth interviews and observations. However, documentary sources are also effective (cost-effective) than the actual interviews and analysis (Bailey, 1994). It is used to categorise, interpret, investigate and also used to identify the limitations of the physical sources which have been written most of the times in public or private domain. The documentary sources have been helpful in social research as the social surveys because it can also be adopted as a scientific method that also needs meticulous adherence to research protocol. Furthermore, even scientist have used documentary sources to supplement the information they collect through social surveys and the information gathered during the in depth analysis that they undertake in the course of their research work.

Karl Marx for example made use of documentary sources and also made use of other official reports in his writings. Apart from using legislations he also made use of newspapers and periodicals. Emile Durkheim also made extensive use of documentary sources. Durkheim’s work Suicide is in fact considered as a modern example that brings linkage between use of data by inference and data by methodological perseverance.

1.4 Summary
The success of any economic growth will depend on a number of factors key amongst them including technology, natural and social resources. Very few countries however take full advantage of their resources and technology to realise the change so much sought. Having customs and values that favour accumulation and capital development is essential for a social system compatible for growth. This is a core element for successful resource utilization, because a flexible political and economic system is fundamental for the process.
Change is a very complex process and for to be realised, many aspects have to be factored in. For instance, technology and availability of resources, demography, economics and politics are all important aspects to be considered. Other change aspects are always viewed as predictable and systematic. On the other hand, other changes are considered coincidental and very random.
The modern state of the social welfare can be attributed to three periods in their historical development. The first can be traced to the early and mid- 19th century in Central and Western Europe and in North America. During this period a variety of social insurance schemes were created by some reformers to cater for the needs of the aged and a selected voluntary market based remedies. The organisations also were designed to cater for the mentally ill while promoting public health simultaneously. Moreover they also warded off epidemics and the participated in expansion of public education and improving the state of life of the poor people. These activities were experienced to what was referred to as the democratic idealism and liberal age. The social welfare institution therefore expressed the spirit of these ideas in that particular age.
The second period can be traced back to the 1870s to the 1920’s. Most of the European countries had social insurance schemes which had incorporated in them various groups and therefore reflected some notions of hierarchy and efficiency.
The third phase can be traced to 1930 during America’s Great Depression. As the name suggests it affected most of the American States since they had even established a very extensive Social Security program. Most of the Central and Western Europe were also affected as they had in the wake of the 2nd World War embraced a social welfare state.
Between 1990 and 2000, however, many of the European nations and the United States have criticised the welfare system and suggestions are there proposing a change in the modern social welfare which might see the evolution of social welfare as it is known today.

The watchdog for this age was the idea that the private sector and government could work together. During this period, most of Europe was engulfed in war and the Marshall plan was instituted to help rebuild the whole of Europe. The plan had laid the political reform base and it had also provided a platform for a rigorous welfare state. The Labour Party in Britain had assumed parliamentary control and the government for that matter enacted laws which saw the extension of the welfare states by calling for the nationalization of specific industries and it also created the National Health Service in 1948 (Pedersen, 1993). This helped in enrolling doctors into the state’s payroll and it also began to further public education. This allowed most families to have larger families because there was a guarantee of better provision of healthcare systems. The welfare schemes we also important in provision of sanitation and expansion of public health as well as providing other welfare services. All this factors combined helped in population increase especially after the two World Wars that engulfed a greater part of the European continent. Other European countries like Sweden and France used the system to provide family allowances and helped to make sure that poverty was eradicated for the sake of the children. Furthermore, they were involved in provision of day-care centres and provision of free higher education amongst other provisos.

1.5 Future plan for social welfare.
The welfare system has however, in the 21st century been revolted against. It has been considered to be an unnecessary expense particularly to the Underdeveloped countries (Skocpol, 1995). For the developed countries it has been seen as an expensive investment. The reason behind this view especially amongst developed countries is the aging population which is deemed incapable of contributing to the social welfare scheme. The future of social welfare is not very certain. Governments keep changing policies and they have shifted their minds from concentration on health to areas like defence which require a lot of money to implement at the risk of the health systems and the social welfare of a country’s citizens.

1.6 Conclusion
Social welfare from the information gathered has an important role to play in the society. From its onset it has seen that the aging in society receive adequate care. Furthermore, it has helped in the realisation of proper healthcare amongst the poor in society. Abolishing it at a time when the global economy is in shambles would spell doom especially to the unemployed in society. Affording healthcare services amongst the poor and unemployed would be almost impossible. Furthermore it would be unfair to subject the same people who contributed diligently when they had gainful employment to the welfare to a life of difficulties. Doing this would only characterise people as important to the government only if they have gainful employment and contribute to the social welfare. Furthermore, every person has got the right to health amongst other rights. Some realise these rights through the social welfares, therefore abolishing it would be violation of the constitution. The social welfare has not outgrown their usefulness and they should remain put. What should change are the policies.

WAL-MART CHAIN STORE

WAL-MART CHAIN STORE

Research and choose one international corporation to discuss (Wal-Mart). You may use the Fortune Global 500 to help you choose a corporation (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/global500/2009/). The corporation you choose may be headquartered in either the United States or a foreign country.

1. Provide a company overview, and identify the countries in which the corporation operates.

2. Identify the types of market systems and types of legal systems that exist in the countries where the corporation operates. What effect do these have on the company’s operations?

3. Discuss the possible sources of political risk for: (a) the countries in which the company has a presence and (b) the basic nature of their products and operations. If you were a political consultant for the company, how would you suggest the company approach its political risk given trends in international political systems?

4. Identify the stakeholders the company must satisfy. Why is this process more difficult for companies operating internationally?

5. Summarize the company’s code of conduct. State the reasons why it is in the company’s best interest to follow its code of conduct when operating in foreign countries.

6. Does the company have any social programs in the country/countries where it operates? If so, briefly describe one.

7. What are the indicators the company might monitor to guide their investment and actions in the future?

Wal-Mart is a retail store that operates more than four thousand outlets in the world. It is the largest retail store in the United States of America and is largest retail chain in the world as well. It also dominates the retail store market in Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom. Its sales include general merchandise such as household needs, family apparel, electronics, shoes, jewelry and beauty aids. The store also runs a photo processing center, tire and lube express and a department of pharmacy. Wal-Mart operates in twenty eight countries and employs more than two million people globally. In other countries other than the United States, Wal-Mart uses different names. The stores are called Welmex in Mexico, Toda Dia in Brazil, Seiyu in Japan, Asda in the United Kingdom, Supercentre and Discount Store in Canada, Trust-Mart in china, Econo in Chile, Pari in Costa Rica, Dispensa Familiar in Guatemala, Dispensa Familiar in El Salvador, Pali in Nicaragua, Dispensa Familiar in Honduras, Changomas in Argentina and Best Price in India. Most recently, Wal-Mart acquired fifty one percent of Mass-mart stores in South Africa, a retail store with two hundred and eighty eight outlets operating in fourteen countries in the southern Africa region (Pereira, 2002).

In the United States where Wal-Mart has its greatest presence, the market system is a free market economy under a capitalistic setting. The consumers relate to the economy by seeking the best value at the lowest prices with free political beliefs and protected rights. Wal-Mart is succeeding by appealing and supporting the consumer needs while striving to remain efficient in its business aspects and offering the lowest prices possible (Courser, 2005). In operating in the other countries, Wal-Mart had to adjust in order to remain flexible and adapt by showing local understanding. Being a typical American store it had to change many of its ways in order to reach out to the suspicious German consumers and the British consumers who are seen as being reserved. Generally, consumer tastes and preferences vary in different countries and therefore Wal-Mart was aware of the fact that selling the same products it sold in the United States in the same way would lead to failure. In the Chinese market for instance, Wal-Mart realized the customers had preference for leafy vegetables than anywhere else where it had outlets. Due to the strict government regulation in China, Wal-Mart could only source for some products such as tobacco and alcohol locally (Towers, 2004).

When venturing into Germany, Wal-Mart acquired more than one hundred of two chain stores which were already operating in Germany. It opted to rebrand due to the low levels of customer care and service that had been dominating the German market. Changing the culture of the consumers in Germany was however not easy and some strategies which had worked well in many other countries were received suspiciously in Germany, for instance, the culture of having Wal-Mart greeters at the store entrance was perceived by the customers as being superficial. The success of Wal-Mart in the global market can majorly be attributed to the way it has been implementing its business culture by tailoring it to local tastes, politics and legal frameworks. Wal-Mart also has a culture of obtaining ideas from its staff for example the successful singles shopping nights held on every Friday nights in its outlets in Germany (Towers, 2004). Given its global presence and success, Wal-Mart can succeed in many other places in the global market provided it tailors its operations to fit the local political and legal needs.

Wal-Mart has two categories of stakeholders: market and non-market stakeholders. Among the market stakeholders that Wal-Mart has to satisfy are stockholders who are interested in the market performance and dividends paid thereof, the Wal-Mart executives who are also interested in market performance since their compensation depends on it, the employees who earn their livelihood from Wal-Mart. Good market performance means they can retain their jobs. The other market stakeholders are the community where Wal-Mart operates and the consumers who are interested both in good performance of the store to benefit from employment and low prices respectively and the non-profit organizations which benefit from funding through the Wal-Mart good Works foundation. Another group of market stakeholders are other retailers (Pereira, 2002).

According to Pereira (2002), Wal-Mart must also satisfy a number of non-market stakeholders such as labor unions. Wal-Mart has it that they can take care of their employees and provide good compensation plans and therefore should not join labor unions. However, Wal-Mart was once charged by the national board on labor relations for violating federal laws by not allowing the employees to hold elections and join the United Food and Commercial Workers International union. The other two non-market stakeholders are international retail stores and politicians. Politicians may be for or against new advancements of Wal-Mart into their districts and some depend on Wal-Mart for campaign funding.

Wal-Mart has a code of conduct on which it has established its culture based on the philosophy ‘respect for the individual, service to customers and striving for excellence’. The code of conduct has been instilled and perpetuated through its employees in all its outlets globally. Some aspects of the code are adjusted in order to attain ‘service to customers’ in new market segments (Pereira 2002). Wal-Mart also operates social programs in the countries it operates by funding non-profit organizations in those countries through the Wal-Mart good Works foundation. For example in Chile and El Salvador, the foundation has successfully funded education, children and environmental programs (Zimmerman & Hudson, 2006).

The actions and investment decisions of Wal-Mart in the future are guided by their strong desire to dominate the global retail store market while providing the locally needed goods and services at the lowest market prices possible. The store venture into new market areas based on the customer base and consumer needs it can satisfy (Sobel & Dean, 2007).
