Writer’s choice of one of the questions

Choose ONE question from the list below. Essays should be 2500 words in length. DO NOT write significantly more or less than 2500 words. Use contemporary examples to support your argument.
1-To what extent do media have effects? Discuss with reference to different behaviourist perspectives on the media-audience relationship.

2-‘The medium is the message’ (McLuhan 1964). Explain McLuhan’s statement in relation to modernity and evaluate its usefulness for understanding TWO media technologies.

3-Assess the strengths and weaknesses of different structuralist theories in their capacity to shed light on media production and consumption?

4-To what extent has the rise of communications media affected patterns of social interaction? Consider at least THREE interactionist perspectives in your answer.

5-Discuss the ways in which feminist theories have informed a contemporary understanding of media and gender. Consider at least TWO feminist perspectives in your answer.

6-“The Orient that appears in Orientalism is a system of representations framed by a whole set of forces that brought the Orient into Western learning, Western consciousness, and later, Western empire” (Said 1995: 202-203). In what ways might Orientalism still persist in today’s political economy of global media?

7-‘Today’s media-saturated, information society is best theorised in terms of postmodernity.’ Critically respond to this statement by evaluating and comparing at least TWO postmodernist perspectives.

8-“Popular culture is made by the people, not produced by the culture industry” (Fiske 1989: 24). Critically explore different arguments concerning the power of media consumerism.

9-Critically evaluate whether media technologies make consumers ‘redundant as producers’ (Adorno and Horkheimer 1973) or enable consumer empowerment given their mass reproducibility (Benjamin 1973).

The Argument Essay

Formal Writing Assignment #: The Argument Essay

The argument essay is the most common type of writing assignment that college students will encounter throughout their academic careers. While there are different variations of the argument essay, the overall foundation is always the same: the writer is tasked with investigating an issue, taking a stand on the issue, and finding and incorporating a multitude of evidence in a logical manner to support the overall claim.
The argument must be specific, reasoned, detailed, and supported with a variety of evidence. Furthermore, a well-written and researched argument essay focuses on what is the right side of a particular issue. In short, an argument essay must be logical from beginning to end.

This assignment contains two parts:

how to tame a wild tongue

\
Broadly Defined Theme: La Frontera/The Border, as Witnessed in Three Genres: poem; essay/prose-poem; film. Key phrases to think about: borders to cross, inter- culturally (between cultures) and/or intra-culturally (within a culture); border between authority and subjection; border between a dream and reality.
Choose one of more of these three sources for your topic: (1) Essay/poem: Gloria Anzaldua, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” (in W.O.R.); (2) Poem: Martin Espada, “The New bathroom Policy at English High School”/”Nueva Norma para el bano en la English High School” (in Rebelion es el giro del manos del amante/Rebellion is the Circle of a Loverʼs Hands (Curbstone Books, publ. 1990) Note: *There is an excellent source for Martin Espada on Wikipedia. (3) Film: Maria, Llena de Gracia/Maria, Full of Grace, 2004, written/directed by Joshua Marston.
Requirements are similar to the requirements for paper #1: Accurate MLA style documentation/formatting; five (5) typed double-spaced pages of your text; quote(s) cited; your own unique title; peer draft, approx. 3 pp. due in class Wed., Nov. 4; Work(s) Cited page.
Conferences: Monday, Nov. 2, all classes (priority to those who have not met with me) Suggestions for Approaching Paper #2:
“How to Tame a Wild Tongue”
[1] Source: p. 35, Q. #2, Questions for a Second Reading: Judging by your responses, many of you have an excellent grasp on the concept of “…Wild Tongue” – the duality Anzaldua discusses; the tug-of-war regarding a mix of languages and dialects; the border between oneʼs true self, and the identity perceived by others, for example, those in the role of authority. So you may expand on your responses re: How you read this “crazy dance”; when, where, how you worked through your frustrations as a reader to find, perhaps, some commonality with the choice to cast an untraditional text such as Anzalduaʼs.
[2] Source: p. 35, Q. #3, Questions for a Second Reading: Refer to the assignment sheet [hard copy or scanned on BBOARD]: How Anzaldua works through her unconventional text as an argument. This question focuses on stages in her argument; possibly speculating on where her argument follows a logical development, or tends more toward an argument justifying her struggle for identity.
[3] Source: pp. 38, 39, Making Connections, Q. #2: This question would appeal to students who feel they have more to say when faced with a “compare/contrast” paper. The questions basically asks you to “…reread Brian Doyleʼs ʻJoyas Voladorasʼ, looking for [metaphorical] moments that can be discussed with/against Anzalduaʼs moments of metaphor – the “tongue” being the most obvious, regarding restraint, language

“prohibition” – and the “wild tongue” identity Anzaldua embraces, as Doyle embraces the heart.
Maria Llena de Gracia/Maria Full of Grace:
[1] Again, keeping “la frontera” in the back of your mind, think about the “borders” Maria is confronted with crossing: A young girlʼs dreams for a better life versus the reality of ingesting pellets of heroin in order to cross over to her ideal world.
[2] You could do a relatively short research paper on a focused aspect of the “mule” as occupation – looking at aspects such as “profiling” [is there an “ideal mule”, in terms of the business authoritiesʼ needs, who is “recruited”?]; statistics: how many return to Colombia [in this case] safely? How many disappear , or are arrested – and what, if any, is a potential solution to diminishing the corruption around this business?
[3] In Ways of Reading: Panopticism, Michel Foucault, p. 185: “They are like so many cages, so many small theaters, in which each actor is alone, perfectly individualized and constantly visible…visibility is a trap.” — Here is a starter passage to get you thinking about the authorities [police, heroin dealers] – and how the “actors” (Maria, Blanca, Lucy, ) are being scrutinized as human machines void of emotional consideration: Ultimately, their behavior is governed by those who pay their salaries.
The New Bathroom Policy at English High School:
[1] Compare/contrast: In “…Wild Tongue” and “…Bathroom Policy” there is a language issue, and each author implies that there is a political, social, gender “border” to consider in remedying the language barrier. Both Anzaldua and Espada are the speakers, observing personal situations. Anzaldua considers male/female and the “dominant” language; Espada speaks on the authority between the male students and the [male Principal and the decisions those in authority are entitled to make.
[2] in Panopticism, Ways of Reading
# Each individual, in his place, is securely confined to a cell for which he is seen
# from the front by the supervisor; but the side walls prevent him from coming in
# contact with his companions. He is seen, but he does not see; he is the object of
# information, never a subject of communication. (185 – 186)
For this one, youʼd want to look at the photos in “Panopticism” to get an idea of the Panoptic concept of the prison. Then, speculate on how the poem recalls a metaphoric “scenario” similar to the Panoptic structure. Consider: From the boysʼ point of view, what comes up around the issues of communication, language, or otherwise? – being “seen”? being “objects”? OR from the Principalsʼʼ mind set: What comes up that recalls Panoptic surveillance/supervision, authoritarian decisions based on communication (or lack thereof)? Also to think about: Whether the roles of authority can overlap or be interchanged, based on who you perceive to be in the passive role or the aggressive role: the boys, or the Principal?

English Literature

Write a paper with a clear and unified compelling literary argument about Charlotte Perkins Gilman‘s The Yellow Wallpaper (1892). For this paper, the main goal is to exercise close reading as evidence for an overall argument about the novel. Must use textual evidence to support the argument.

Formulate your own argument. Make sure that the paper has a singular focused argument, that answers what, how, and why. What is the argument, how is the manner by which the text is supporting this argument, and why is the importance of the argument.
Please write as deep as possible and develop as much as possible. Don’t just provide several points and move on to next. Rather than merely an account of various interesting things in the text, let your paper focus in on a primary argument. Avoid needless summary or book report style papers.

Please follow the instructions and comments on the paper. Then Add 2 more pages of part #3. Last time you only wrote part 2 and didnt even include part 1!!! i need all papers to be included in part #3. You can not change subjects now you can onlt try to blend them all together. Im going to send you part 1 and 2 again to adjust and blend together. THEN ADD PART #3. In part #3 Explain how the pathway impacts the health condition in a high income country and a low income country. Compare and contrast the countries. Show data verifying the HIC and LIC status of each country. Tables and graphs might be useful to compare patterns in the two countries. Critically discuss how the pathway affects the population levels of the health condition. Explain reasons why the patterns/effects exist in the two countries. Tell us why you chose these two countries to compare. (2-4 pages)

……………………… Those are the paper format please follow: Please apply those on all parts of the assignment!! Organization and Format of the Paper The numbers of pages per part are suggestions, but the paper should be about 6-10 pages excluding references. There should be at least 10 references, mainly from professional peer-reviewed journals. Limit references to websites to less than 1/4 of all references, and include the name and date of the web site you accessed. Pages must be 1.5 spaced with paragraphs indented but no lines skipped between paragraphs. The final copy of your paper will be accompanied by your “Turn It In” report (an app on Canvas) detailing the percentage of your paper that copies other people’s work. Instructions will be given to you about how to use this program. You will have the ability to submit your paper to “Turn It In” as part of your own drafting and revising process. The instructor needs to see the report of your final complete version, the one you submit for grading. Put your name in the document not just in the file name, that way you are showing me that you take responsibility for your work. Put the date of submission in the document. Put your last name (family name) in the filename of the document you submit, preferably something like Lastname-part1, Lastname-part 2, etc. Please use section headings that clearly indicate the 4 parts of your paper. Include page numbers in the document. Submit each part electronically to Canvas at the place set up by the TA to receive them. Provide a professionally prepared list of references for your paper. Referencing Guidelines for Global Health Overview Pathways Paper Scientific reports often assume that “the scientist knows nothing” and must reference each fact as it appears in the paper. Other scientists want to know where you got your information, so they can check it for authenticity and see if they accept the facts you present. The following example shows unclear and incomplete referencing for stated facts: “Recent rates of breastfeeding (ever) are 73.9% in the United States and 90.3% in Canada, compared to 97.1% in Kenya and 98.5% in Peru (data from the CDC and WHO).” Which reference belongs to which rate? Each fact/number needs its own reference: for example, “73.9% in the United States (reference A) and 90.3% in Canada (reference B)”. 8 GHO-task-guidelines-2015, bjs, aje, 9/14/2015 4:15 PM Accurate information means referencing where the facts you use came from. Statements like “Studies show…” or “1 billion people in the world are undernourished” need references. If a whole paragraph of information is derived from the same source, please put the reference at the start of the paragraph with a sentence like: “The following information comes from Jones et al. (2015).” The style of having the reference for an entire paragraph of data at the end is not acceptable. If information comes from different sources in the paragraph, then put each reference in place for each piece of information. Anything obtained from a web site needs the accessed Internet address and the date when the accessing occurred, not just the date of the source document. Writing Style Avoid journalistic (subjective) writing using words like “tremendous”, “horrible”, “large”, “many”, and provide data instead with comparisons to show how big a difference there is between some standard reference (or what is considered “optimal”) and the “non-normative”. For example, “exclusive breastfeeding rates for the first 6 months of life are 4 times higher in Peru than in the USA (reference C).” For a scientific paper – you need references for subjective thoughts, and if you are quoting, then use quotation marks, or use data to make the case along with proper citation for the data. For scientific writing we are advocating that students use a style where the “point” or “bottom line” is the first sentence in the paragraph, and the sentences in the rest of the paragraph provide information in support of the assertion. I want to read the main point, and then fact, fact, fact, in support of that point…each with its own reference at the point of stating the facts (if they each come from a different source). Here’s a good example: “Typically the problem of domestic violence is more pronounced for women, but it is a problem for both men and women. According to the CDC, about 24.3% of women and 13.8% of men “have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner…at some point in their lifetime” (“Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence”, 2013). Furthermore, “9.4% of women have been raped by an intimate partner” and about twice as many women (16.9%) than men (8.0%) have experienced some other form of sexual violence (“Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence”, 2013). Finally, one third of “female homicide victims [are] murdered by their current or former partner (“Domestic Violence: Statistics & Facts”, 2015).” I will attach some chapters and powerpoints to guide you through the paperless

PLEASE FIX PART 1 and 2 based on the comments and then blend together, THEN START part#3. MAKE sure you refer to the documents i attached in the past order as well. VERY IMPORTANT!
