how to tame a wild tongue

\
Broadly Defined Theme: La Frontera/The Border, as Witnessed in Three Genres: poem; essay/prose-poem; film. Key phrases to think about: borders to cross, inter- culturally (between cultures) and/or intra-culturally (within a culture); border between authority and subjection; border between a dream and reality.
Choose one of more of these three sources for your topic: (1) Essay/poem: Gloria Anzaldua, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” (in W.O.R.); (2) Poem: Martin Espada, “The New bathroom Policy at English High School”/”Nueva Norma para el bano en la English High School” (in Rebelion es el giro del manos del amante/Rebellion is the Circle of a Loverʼs Hands (Curbstone Books, publ. 1990) Note: *There is an excellent source for Martin Espada on Wikipedia. (3) Film: Maria, Llena de Gracia/Maria, Full of Grace, 2004, written/directed by Joshua Marston.
Requirements are similar to the requirements for paper #1: Accurate MLA style documentation/formatting; five (5) typed double-spaced pages of your text; quote(s) cited; your own unique title; peer draft, approx. 3 pp. due in class Wed., Nov. 4; Work(s) Cited page.
Conferences: Monday, Nov. 2, all classes (priority to those who have not met with me) Suggestions for Approaching Paper #2:
“How to Tame a Wild Tongue”
[1] Source: p. 35, Q. #2, Questions for a Second Reading: Judging by your responses, many of you have an excellent grasp on the concept of “…Wild Tongue” – the duality Anzaldua discusses; the tug-of-war regarding a mix of languages and dialects; the border between oneʼs true self, and the identity perceived by others, for example, those in the role of authority. So you may expand on your responses re: How you read this “crazy dance”; when, where, how you worked through your frustrations as a reader to find, perhaps, some commonality with the choice to cast an untraditional text such as Anzalduaʼs.
[2] Source: p. 35, Q. #3, Questions for a Second Reading: Refer to the assignment sheet [hard copy or scanned on BBOARD]: How Anzaldua works through her unconventional text as an argument. This question focuses on stages in her argument; possibly speculating on where her argument follows a logical development, or tends more toward an argument justifying her struggle for identity.
[3] Source: pp. 38, 39, Making Connections, Q. #2: This question would appeal to students who feel they have more to say when faced with a “compare/contrast” paper. The questions basically asks you to “…reread Brian Doyleʼs ʻJoyas Voladorasʼ, looking for [metaphorical] moments that can be discussed with/against Anzalduaʼs moments of metaphor – the “tongue” being the most obvious, regarding restraint, language

“prohibition” – and the “wild tongue” identity Anzaldua embraces, as Doyle embraces the heart.
Maria Llena de Gracia/Maria Full of Grace:
[1] Again, keeping “la frontera” in the back of your mind, think about the “borders” Maria is confronted with crossing: A young girlʼs dreams for a better life versus the reality of ingesting pellets of heroin in order to cross over to her ideal world.
[2] You could do a relatively short research paper on a focused aspect of the “mule” as occupation – looking at aspects such as “profiling” [is there an “ideal mule”, in terms of the business authoritiesʼ needs, who is “recruited”?]; statistics: how many return to Colombia [in this case] safely? How many disappear , or are arrested – and what, if any, is a potential solution to diminishing the corruption around this business?
[3] In Ways of Reading: Panopticism, Michel Foucault, p. 185: “They are like so many cages, so many small theaters, in which each actor is alone, perfectly individualized and constantly visible…visibility is a trap.” — Here is a starter passage to get you thinking about the authorities [police, heroin dealers] – and how the “actors” (Maria, Blanca, Lucy, ) are being scrutinized as human machines void of emotional consideration: Ultimately, their behavior is governed by those who pay their salaries.
The New Bathroom Policy at English High School:
[1] Compare/contrast: In “…Wild Tongue” and “…Bathroom Policy” there is a language issue, and each author implies that there is a political, social, gender “border” to consider in remedying the language barrier. Both Anzaldua and Espada are the speakers, observing personal situations. Anzaldua considers male/female and the “dominant” language; Espada speaks on the authority between the male students and the [male Principal and the decisions those in authority are entitled to make.
[2] in Panopticism, Ways of Reading
# Each individual, in his place, is securely confined to a cell for which he is seen
# from the front by the supervisor; but the side walls prevent him from coming in
# contact with his companions. He is seen, but he does not see; he is the object of
# information, never a subject of communication. (185 – 186)
For this one, youʼd want to look at the photos in “Panopticism” to get an idea of the Panoptic concept of the prison. Then, speculate on how the poem recalls a metaphoric “scenario” similar to the Panoptic structure. Consider: From the boysʼ point of view, what comes up around the issues of communication, language, or otherwise? – being “seen”? being “objects”? OR from the Principalsʼʼ mind set: What comes up that recalls Panoptic surveillance/supervision, authoritarian decisions based on communication (or lack thereof)? Also to think about: Whether the roles of authority can overlap or be interchanged, based on who you perceive to be in the passive role or the aggressive role: the boys, or the Principal?

English Literature

Write a paper with a clear and unified compelling literary argument about Charlotte Perkins Gilman‘s The Yellow Wallpaper (1892). For this paper, the main goal is to exercise close reading as evidence for an overall argument about the novel. Must use textual evidence to support the argument.

Formulate your own argument. Make sure that the paper has a singular focused argument, that answers what, how, and why. What is the argument, how is the manner by which the text is supporting this argument, and why is the importance of the argument.
Please write as deep as possible and develop as much as possible. Don’t just provide several points and move on to next. Rather than merely an account of various interesting things in the text, let your paper focus in on a primary argument. Avoid needless summary or book report style papers.

Literature review

A review of the literature is a paper that is intended to provide evidence of knowledge in a given area of study. The review of the literature for this course will incorporate the literature you included in your Annotated Bibliography earlier this semester. Your review of the literature will include a description of your view of nursing knowledge and how you view nursing science and practice (your philosophy based on what you learned from this course and from your practice). How does this personal philosophy inform how you view the two concepts you selected for your annotated bibliography? How do your views fit within the metaparadigm of nursing? Your review of the literature is expected to describe fully the two concepts you selected by discussing relevant works, by drawing logical connections between and among findings in the literature, the concepts themselves, your selected theory, and your own thinking as it develops in relation to these concepts.
An introduction: At least one paragraph that introduces the topic of your review. The introduction should capture the reader’s attention and peak the reader’s interest. You must include a thesis statement in your introduction.

Background information: The background section provides an important foundation that helps to argue the importance of conducting your review. Here you include the theoretical foundation for your review, which includes your personal philosophy based on the evidence and your own practice. Provide a definition of the concepts. You will also introduce and describe your selected theory to which you apply your selected concepts.
Results: Your results should include a synthesis of the literature making clear connections between the literature and the two concepts you selected. How do your concepts fit with the theory you selected and how does the literature support these connections? You must also demonstrate evidence of critiquing the literature to identify strengths and weaknesses in the literature included. Identify any gaps in the literature that indicate that additional research is needed.
Implications for nursing practice: You must include pertinent and relevant implications derived from your review that would be useful to nurses in advanced practice.
Conclusion: Provide a concise, but thorough summary of the important findings from your review of the literature; include highlights from the implications and suggest possible areas for future research in this area.
Your paper must be in APA format, which requires both a title and a reference page.

Parable paper: analysea a narrative or visual cliché in advertising

parable paper assignment:

Drawing on Roland Marchand’s text “The Great Parables,” you are to identify a narrative or visual cliché in advertising from a single decade between 1900-1990, and to analyze it as a ‘parable’ along the lines established by Marchand. You need to go beyond simply identifying the parable or narrative; you are expected to analyse its larger meaning in relation to its historical period.

**Your parable must NOT be one of those discussed by Marchand: you are expected to identify and develop your own parable***

In choosing your 2-3 examples of ads, you will likely want to consult the book series All-American Ads (Taschen books), on reserve at the OCAD library. These include a wide range of print advertisements, and are helpfully separated by decade.*You must indicate a source for your ad examples (where you found them); if you are including a tv/online clip in your examples, please provide a URL so that I can access the ad.

In an essay of approximately 5-6 double-spaced typed pages, you will:

Identify and describe your chosen ‘parable’ or ‘visual cliché’;
Analyse 2-3 ads from your chosen decade in terms of how they express this parable;
Give some historical context/background through which we can understand the power of this parable at the time;
Briefly discuss the significance and contemporary life of this parable. Is it still with us? Does it take a different form today? Why?
Your project should be accompanied by reproductions (black and white photocopies are okay) of your chosen advertisements (these are not included in page length).

You must properly reference any sources quoted, paraphrased or otherwise utilised in your writing.

Making up by writer according to the answer For your coursework, you asked to finish a essay in following areas,

a brief contextualization of the topic from the literature (e.g., marketing ethics, consumer behaviour, marketing entry strategies, etc.),
a critical discussion of the different positions based on the contextualization, and
a concluding statement and outlook derived from your discussion
The task is:
The suggestion that organizations should focus on the needs and wants of their customers – and of consumers more generally – may be thought of as one of marketing’s more prominent achievements. Critically discuss this notion by making particular reference to some of the strategic challenges potentially arising from an organization (a) not focusing sufficiently on consumer needs, or (b) placing a strong emphasis on the current needs of consumers.

Whichever approach you take, you must focus appropriately and with enough detail to show you understand the context (and the relevant literature) properly.

You must explain why you are addressing the question you way you are answering it to make yourself clear.

self portraits of/by Rembradt and Vincent van Gogh

Compare and contrast the self portraits of/by Rembradt and Vincent van Gogh, discussing in depth similarities and differences between two works of art ( or more)by each artist. Examine their similarities and difference in the content of their time period, country, and culture.

Write a response paper about “Into the woods(1987)”

Your essay must with following format: Paragraph 1: Introduction and Thesis Statement – This paragraph should tell me what your paper is about, what arguments you’re going to make, and how you’re going to make them. The Introduction must also include: the title of the musical (this need to be underlined or italicized), who wrote the music, who wrote lyrics, who wrote the libretto. Your thesis statement, in which you succinctly map-out your entire argument, should be the last sentence of this paragraph. If your paper is missing a clear thesis statement, then it is impossible for your reader to clearly follow the rest of the paper. Your thesis statement MUST do TWO things: 1) Choose a significant/central theme that you saw in this musical 2) Make a claim about that theme, which you will prove through the duration of your paper. What is this musical saying about that theme? For example, “love” is not a sufficient theme/thesis statement, but a stronger theme/thesis will make a claim that your paper will prove such as “XYZ musical represents that love does /does not conquer all obstacles.”
Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4: These paragraphs must begin with a clear topic sentence that guides the central idea/argument and connects back to the thesis statement. The body of the paragraph should include clear and specific examples that will prove your thesis statement. For each paragraph, choose a specific song, scene or moment that illustrates the theme you have chosen. Be as specific and detailed as possible in your examples to help prove your argument. Use quotes from song lyrics or dialogue to help bolster your argument. **Do not simply retell the plot (your reader already knows the plot). To avoid plot recap, make sure the details and the way you present the details are followed by analysis and always reconnect back to your thesis.
Paragraph 5: Conclusion – In your final paragraph, synthesize, without restating, the argument you have been working on throughout the paper in order to answer the question, “Is this theme still relevant today?” Consider other questions such as why do we care about this musical? Why is it an important part of the history of American Musical Theatre? Ultimately, you must answer the question “Is this theme still relevant today?” and support that claim with specific evidence
