Course Project Phase I and Description

Course Project Phase I and Description

The course project will focus on (A) researching a company and the operations & supply chain management techniques they deploy, (B) application and utilization of the tools learned in the course.

Preliminary activities for the course project:

Select an organization to analyze (this can be a team member’s employer, local business, a publically traded company, etc.)
Begin searching for articles, datasets, etc. for this company
Determine which tools from the course you will use for the project by carefully reviewing and considering topics listed in the course syllabus.
The expectation is that you will use a minimum of four tools from class
g., SWOT analysis, QFD House of Quality, SPC Control Charts, Location Strategy tools, Service Blueprint, etc.
Develop a schedule in MS Project which you will submit containing a minimum of the following items:
List the tasks, predecessor relationships, allocate resources (i.e., your time) by naming who is responsible for each portion, etc.
First day should be 4/6 and last day should be 5/5
I would recommend making use of the class time if and when made to work with your team and ask questions about the project
Phase I / Project Proposal
The company you have selected to analyze with a one page write-up of why you selected the company and your plan for the rest of the semester
The tools you plan to use this semester for your analysis
NOTE THAT YOU CAN CHANGE THE TOOLS PRIOR TO FINAL PROJECT SUBMISSION
MS Project file that contains, at a minimum, the items listed above
Final project deliverables (due at the end of the course by Monday 9/28) include:
One final written report to management which should include:
An executive summary
An explanation of all the tools used for the project
No minimum of maximum length (typical range of 5 to 20 pages).
All supporting files used (MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Visio, MS Project, etc.)
g., SPC Control Chart in MS Excel, QFD House of Quality in MS Excel or MS PowerPoint, Flowchart in MS Visio, etc.
Note the following important details from the syllabus regarding the project:

Presentations: There will be some class time provided for you to develop team presentations. You will develop some presentations during class time and you will do a group presentation on a company and an operations topic of your choice based on your team project detailed below. You can pick any organization and topics related to operations, supply chain, or logistics management at the organization. Try to narrow down the topic so that in-depth analysis is possible.

General guidelines for presentations: You should start with a description of the organization and/or topics explaining their importance to business and operations. Next, present the key findings related to the topic that exists in the literature. Then, discuss the challenges and unanswered questions associated with this topic. Finally, offer your recommendations for dealing with the challenges. I expect your presentations to spend more time on the challenges and recommendations than anything else. You can bring in examples of companies from various industries to present your arguments.

You will have varying time to present depending on the assignment and the presentation will be followed by a brief Q&A session. Professional PowerPoint presentations are expected unless your instructor advises otherwise. You need to provide me with electronic copies of all slides on the day of the presentations via e-mail.

Team Project: All students enrolled in the course will have a course project that will be completed in teams which will be assigned by the instructor early in the semester.  The project is very open-ended and is typically done by completing a project for a local or multinational company using the tools from class in teams of 3 to 4 students.  There will be a peer evaluation as well to ensure individual contributions are adequate for credit.  We will discuss the requirements and project throughout the semester.  The deliverables shall be a final project report, powerpoint presentation, and the individual source files used (e.g., MS Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, etc. files).

Written Report

Report Brief

To produce a report, looking at an organisation that you are familiar with, and reporting on the organisation – its background and how it manages the innovation process, it’s strategic approach, and how it enables staff to do this.

            Suggested Methodology

  • Identify Organisation

Select a business you can access readily for your investigation. Your task is to comment on how innovative and creative you consider this organisation to be, by applying what you have learnt in the workshops.

The business should preferably be a small to medium sized business. Avoid companies with less than 5 employees. Your organisation choice should be one that will allow you to demonstrate and apply your learning from the module. You can choose the organisation you work for, just remember you need to be able to take a step back and be objective, and carry out research on your colleagues.

To ensure co-operation will be forthcoming you should first contact the company and seek their permission for a fact finding trip – you will need to undertake PRIMARY research – this usually consists of an interview and follow up contact with management and staff eg a questionnaire / observation etc

  • Secondary Research

Research the company and the individual via secondary / desk research BEFORE the visit.  Try to find out:

  • The core area of business.
  • History of the business.

3       Primary Research

Prepare a series of questions to ask the interviewee, preferably a manager in the company, covering the module materials and the sections in the Report Marking Sheet (next section) – these should build on the information you have discovered in your desk research.  Leave enough time for this, and record the findings where possible, so that you can refer back to the information later and include in the report’s appendices. Please ensure your own personal safety/security throughout the primary research, especially if you are meeting the interviewee for the first time.

If possible it is good to try and get a management and a staff perspective, maybe via a questionnaire, or the use of Survey Monkey – these will be discussed in the workshop.

  1. Conduct Research

Leave enough time for this, and record the findings where possible, so that you can refer back to the questions.

Write up your findings in a report – include as much information about the organisation as possible eg leaflets, logos, etc.

Your report should include an introduction and finish with appropriate conclusions and recommendations. It is likely that it will be 3,500 words in length (excluding appendices etc) to adequately cover the criteria.

READING – LIST

There is no one text book that just covers the subject areas we are looking at.  The following texts are excellent regarding Innovation, but should not be viewed as essential.  For additional reading, the Managing Innovation book is probably the best, but please note, this is only an introductory module, so you do not require the level of detail given in this book for your Assessment.  For those who are not close to a campus, the Paul Trott book is available as an e-book, and covers the main areas we are covering on the module too.

Analytic Essay
Research Topic: Why have historians argued that the philosophes were a “party of humanity?” Why is it significant that the philosophes themselves lableled their own age an Age of Enlightenment?
Page Length: 5-6 pages, not including Works Cited page
Purpose:
In the Comparative Source Analysis you just completed, you were introduced to two scholars’ work on a common topic. You were asked to make observations about these two sources related to one another and to design a research question that both scholars may have answered in their work. In the third writing assignment, the Analytical Essay, you will craft a small independent research project on a topic of your own interest. This assignment will provide you with another opportunity to practice critical reading, summarization and paraphrasing skills, and research question design. Moreover, you will develop new skills to prepare you to write a full-length research paper next quarter in MMW 122. In this assignment you will:
 identify a research topic of your choice (but related to class themes and within period 1500 BCE- 1750 Ce) and that poses a conceptual problem that you have observed in your reading.
 design a Level-3 research question about that conceptual problem.  conduct independent research to find several sources that answer your question research question. You will learn research strategies by attending a mandatory UCSD Library Research Workshop during Week 7.
 practice evaluating sources by assessing which two sources provide different answers to your question.
 write an analytical essay that utilizes these two sources to develop an argument that supports the best answer to your question (your thesis). This essay should address all of the relevant components of argumentation required in MMW papers.
Finding appropriate sources
With your topic(s) and research question(s) in hand, attend a mandatory MMW 121 Library Research
Workshop during Week 7 (see flyer posted on MMW website or Keller-Lapp’s Ted site for
dates/times). This workshop is designed so that you will actively search for sources while in the
workshop; the goal is for you to leave with a number of appropriate sources for your paper. From
the sources you find, you are required to read and select two scholarly, peer-reviewed secondary
sources that provide different answers to your proposed research question and that you will analyze
and use to make your argument (for an explanation of “scholarly, peer-reviewed sources,” see the
Sources for MMW Research Papers posted to the MMW Website). While you may use class
materials as additional sources, the purpose of the assignment is for you to write an analytical essay
that evaluates the arguments made in two secondary sources (and only these two) as they relate to
your topic and research question and to advance your own position based on evidence in this
scholarship.
Write your analytical essay
In five-to-six pages, you will answer your posed question with a thesis that you will support with an
argument. You analysis should include (not necessarily in this order):
 a title that captures the reader’s attention and best reflects the content of your analytical
essay
 an introduction to the subject that provides the background information necessary to
situate the two sources in their historical context and to help the reader understand the
conceptual problem that you have identified in your reading. Briefly describe how the
conceptual problem that you have observed has led you to your research question. State
the research question explicitly.
 your thesis. This is your case for the best answer to your research question. You may
discuss which of your two selected sources provides the most convincing argument or you
may advance an original thesis based on your analysis of the two arguments you have
selected. As you make your case (your argument), you will articulate, with evidence from
the selected secondary sources, why the position that you advance is the best (most
convincing) answer to your research question and the best solution to the problem. In doing
so, you should also address, even rebut, relevant counter-evidence or opposing or
different points of view (counter-arguments). You may use course material as additional
evidence if you’d like, but the purpose of the assignment is for you to analyze the arguments
made in the two secondary sources you have selected.
 an explanation of the significance of this question and your answer to the question for
those of us studying the pre-modern world. A good paper addresses significance throughout
the paper, not just in a sentence in the conclusion.
Citations: You may use direct quotations in this assignment, but please use them intentionally and sparingly.
Cite paraphrased and quoted material appropriately.

Essay Format
The paper should be written in proper essay format, including complete sentences and paragraphs, a clear introduction laying out the argument and thesis, a conclusion, and a carefully explained and organized argument. References should follow an accepted style, and be consistent. Essays should use proper grammar and should be carefully spell-checked. Include your TA’s name and tutorial number on the title page, and make sure to staple the essay (no binders or folders). Keep a backup of the essay, rough work and notes.
Late penalty: 2%/day (unless accompanied by appropriate documentation)

Sources
Essays should draw on the following: 1. two course readings; 2. one academic source from outside the course that you find through library research (either a scholarly book [NOT a textbook] or academic journal article); 3. and one or more credible non-academic sources (NOT Wikipedia). For research help, see the ‘Spark’ pages on the York Library website. This is the minimum number of sources required; you can use more sources when warranted.
The outside research will be especially useful in helping you develop the case study. The non-academic online source will generally be a text that you will analyze using the academic concepts from the course and your academic research. For example, if you are doing a study of ‘ideology’ (topic 1), you may choose to analyze the ideology(ies) of a newspaper article, movie, TV program, or other media text.

Note on case studies
Each of the topics below asks you to develop a ‘case study.’ What this means is that you should find a media example or case that illustrates and helps you explore a specific concept or approach. Frequently used case studies in lectures in this way. For example, in the first lecture you spent some time on the case study of Ferguson and the killing of Michael Brown to help explain communication studies approaches. What case study you select is up to you. It can be something that you’ve discovered in your research, or can come from ideas in the course readings.

Topics
Develop an essay that addresses one of the following topics. Make sure to address all of the issues being used. Make use of the ideas and approaches developed in the course, including any relevant ones from other weeks in the course. Theoretical approaches or concepts are especially useful in this respect.
(over)
1. Explain what is meant by the term ‘ideology’ and its significance for media and communication studies. Develop a specific case study showing an ideology at work in the media, and discuss the extent to which alternatives to this ideology exist. In selecting a case study, keep in mind the various ideologies we have looked at, in particular (but not only) deeply rooted ideologies of gender, race, nation/nationalism, capitalism, or religion.

2. Communication studies approaches to ‘popular culture’ tend to argue that audiences are active participants in using or consuming media. Develop a specific case study through which to explore the role of the audience in popular culture. To what extent does this case study confirm the view that the audience is ‘active’?

3. Feminist communication research argues that media is shaped in many different ways by gendered social relations and inequalities. Select a case study of the gendered nature of media through which to explore one or more feminist approaches to media studies. In developing your argument, address one or more of the following aspects of the media in relation to gender: as an industry; who works in media; media representations; the use of media (ie. audiences).

4. Advertising is crucial to the functioning of a market system, but many analysts also argue that it gives rise to problems, including a) the creation of ‘false needs,’ b) over consumption, and c) the propagation of dominant ideologies. Through the analysis of a specific case study, explore each of these critiques of advertising.

5. (alternate advertising question) Market segmentation is central to the way in which audiences are targeted as consumers. Through the exploration of one ad or advertising campaign, analyze how this market segmentation works in practice. The essay should include: a) a semiotic analysis of one advertisement; b) a discussion of the ideology or ideologies at work in the advertisement or campaign.

Grading criteria
Understanding of the course material and ability to explain and use the sources effectively; selection of relevant outside sources.
Clarity of presentation (see ‘essay format’ above). Especially important is a clear overall argument, supported by evidence, and taking into consideration the different and often competing arguments offered by the authors.
Effective application of relevant course concepts to your case study.
Originality of thinking.
