For your Final Principles of Success Plan, you will combine the goals and principles you wrote
for Milestone 1 and Milestone 2 (Assignments 1 and 2 in this course), and then you will add the
three additional principles based on concepts presented in chapters 8, 9, and 10 in your webtext –
mindset, grit, and self-regulation.
To complete your final paper, first make any necessary edits to Milestone 1 and Milestone 2
based on feedback from your instructor. Next, from the information presented on mindset, grit,
and self-regulation (in chapters 8-10), summarize each concept and determine one principle of
success for each concept related to meeting the goals you set in Milestone 1. In other words, how
would you advise a person to succeed in accomplishing goals based on what you’ve learned
about mindset, grit, and self-regulation? (Principles may be focused on pursuing goals or
overcoming obstacles or setbacks in meeting those goals.) In addition, explain how you have
experienced each of these principles working in your own life or how you plan to apply them to

See the example PSA flyer attached. The example PSA flyer is based on Jack London’s To Build a Fire that you read in Part 1 of the course. In

To Build a Fire, the themes present are man versus nature and the main character’s arrogance. The PSA illustrates these themes by noting the

life-threatening danger of hypothermia and how to educate ourselves (listening to the experts) and to plan ahead and prepare. When you analyze

your chosen story, remember that summary is not analysis. To create the PSA, you must focus on a theme(s) from the story’s analysis.

Guidance: The ‘demographic shift’ could be the ageing population, lifestyle factors increasing chronic illness and co-morbidity, or the

increased prevalence of mental health issues.
You may wish to select one of these areas to focus on, providing evidence this challenge exists. What are the key issues within these

How to write the final paper

The final paper is essentially a literature review that ends with an original research question and a testablehypothesis (i.e., the introduction section of a journal article). Note that this paper should not only be areport on past research, but should focus on describing a phenomenon you want to examine, explainingwhy a phenomenon is theoretically interesting, and providing a research question and a testablehypothesis. it is strongly recommended thatyou stay focused! Have a clear and concise research question; preferably compare two cultural groups,not more; examine one and at most two dependent/criterion variables.

These are the main sections of the paper:
1. Title page
2. Introduction or first opening paragraph
– First lines should be general in topic and can use an example if it’s helpful for engagingthe reader.
– Once you’ve introduced the topic, clearly describe the main problem your topicaddresses.
– Briefly explain the significance of the topic. For example, what is unknown that yourtopic addresses, and what is the theoretical or practical importance?
3. Literature review
– The goal in the literature review is to set up the rationale for your research question andhypotheses so that these do not come as a surprise when you state them explicitly in theoverview of your research question.
– Describe any conceptual variables in your paper, ideally by providing a definition frompast literature. You should also be sure to describe any technical terms.
– Be sure to include only the most relevant literature for your paper. For many topics, therewill be lots of articles to choose from, so you have to make good choices about whichreferences are most relevant to include. It is of course no problem to include more thanthe minimum of 10 peer-reviewed academic journal articles, but remember that your
references need to be worth citing.
– Report relevant research by topic (or points/arguments) rather than by paper/study. Notethat this should not be written in a “book report” style, which tends to just summarize onearticle or study per paragraph. Instead, your literature review should be similar to whatyou would see in the introduction of a journal article. The paragraphs should beorganized around arguments or points that you are trying to make in order to set up yourresearch idea, and you should use references to support your points. Read through theintroductions of different published articles to get a sense of the different ways you candiscuss relevant research by topic.
– Think carefully about how to organize your paragraphs across the whole body of thepaper. Each paragraph should make a clear argument or point that follows a logical orderfrom one paragraph to the next. It can help to make an outline of your paper first so thatyou can plan the order of your paragraphs.
– When describing relevant past research, focus on results of the articles, and set things upwith information from the methods only when necessary (i.e., if you can’t understand theresults without it). Do not summarize the entire article.
– As you review past research, be sure to interpret the findings. Explain what the findingsmean for your research question or hypothesis. Remember that throughout your literaturereview, you should be making a clear argument for why findings are relevant to orimportant for your hypothesis.
– Include articles for and against your hypothesis if there’s some debate in the literature.
– In your paper, do not use the heading “Literature Review.” You may choose to make useof subheadings in this section in order to organize your points more clearly (e.g.,“Emotion Suppression and Well-being”), but subheadings are optional. Again, you canrefer to other published articles to see some examples.
4. Research question and hypothesis
– At the end of your literature review, you should give a brief overview of your newresearch question and hypotheses. You can label this section “The Present Study” orsomething similar to this.
– State the purpose of your study or your research question.
– Address how your research question is different from what has been done before. How isit new compared to the literature you just reviewed?
– Explain how your research would contribute to the past literature (i.e., theoretical
implications).
– Explain the potential real-world impacts of your research (i.e., practical implications).
– State your hypothesis with specific predictions. From reading through your literaturereview, the reader should be able to guess what your hypothesis is at this point. That is, itshould not be a surprise what your research question is or what you predict because youshould have set up a clear argument for your research question and predictions
throughout the body of the paper.
– Your hypothesis should include independent and dependent variables (for an experiment)or predictor and criterion variables (if you instead envision that non-experimentalmethods are more appropriate); it is a statement about how your variables relate. Forexample, what is the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable for each
cultural group? Or what is the association between the predictor and criterion for eachcultural group?

General Instructions: in the research essay, you must demonstrate the ability to evaluate the literary merits of fiction and back up your analysis with details and quotations from the fiction, as well as quotation from literary critics. You must use at least five sources BESIDES YOUR TEXT.Although you are free to quote dictionaries, they do not count as part of your five sources. You must have at least four indirect quotes(paraphrases), three direct short quotes, and one direct long quote�all from your required five sources. Moreover, your essay must not be a mere summary of criticism in your research sources. Instead, you must take a thesis position that offers your own interpretation of the fiction and then support that interpretation with your own analysis aided by quotations from the author�s short fiction and from literary critics. Your essay should have an approximate length of 1800 words and must scrupulously adhere to MLA citation style for the documentation of all quotations, both direct and indirect; however, your works cited page does not count as part of your 1800 words. Additionally, you must write an abstract of 150-200 wordssummarizing your essay. Your essay must address the following specific topic:

Evaluation of a Story within an Author’s Overall Works

You must analyze whether a story from our text is typical of the author’s short stories as a whole in style, theme, technique or subject matter; or whether this story marks a departure or new direction for the author. Furthermore, you must evaluate whether this typical or atypical story marks a decline or improvement for the author when compared to his/her other works. Your five research sources should combine quotations from some of the author’s most representative works (primary sources) and criticism about the author by literary experts (secondary sources). The following is an example of a good thesis statement for this assignment:

Ex. In one of her most highly acclaimed stories, “The Storm,” Mrs. Chopin employs a much more provocative and liberal narrative voice than her other writings to illustrate her views on woman’s true sexual nature.

An annotated bibliography is a self-evaluation of possible research sources. Its purpose is help a scholar determine whether his or her research is of sufficient scope and quality to begin the writing stage of a research project.

Your annotated bibliography should follow the example in your e-text Little Brown Compact Handbook, eighth edition, pages 365-367. You should have at least six entries on your bibliography. Put your entries in alphabetical order as you would a Works Cited page. Each entry should have at least a 150 word paragraph describing the source and its appropriateness for your research topic. Three of your entries should describe short stories by your author that you will draw upon to compare to that author�s short story in our textbook. Three of your entries should evaluate critical articles by scholars about your chosen author�s short fiction. At least two of your critical articles should come from peer-reviewed scholarly sources. You may use Wikipedia, Smoop.com, Sparknotes or similar non-peer reviewed website for your third source but make sure to rely primarily upon your peer-reviewed sources for most of your critical support.

Put the normal heading as you would for an essay at the top of the first page. Then center the words Annotated Bibliography followed by a colon and then the title of your chosen short story from our text book as the title of your bibliography.
