Assignment 1—Wicked Urban Problems in the News
Assignment Overview
Wicked urban problems are all around us. They also appear in the news…often surrounded by controversy.
Such wicked problems help illustrate the politically-charged nature of urban planning. This assignment
requires you to conduct an analysis of the news to identify an example of a “wicked” urban problem that is
making headlines.
Completing the Essay
Search the news for articles addressing urban issues that fit the four criteria for “wicked” problems discussed
in class. Your task for this assignment is to identify a real-life example that illustrates the political, and often
controversial, nature of the planning process. The example you find can be local or in another city, can relate
to any of the functional areas of planning (e.g. transportation, housing, economic development,
environmental planning, etc.), and may be project-specific or focused on larger comprehensive planning
activities. Pick a case study (NOT the South Mountain Freeway discussed in class) for which you can find
adequate details and information about the urban problem being addressed. You must find a minimum of
three sources of information about your case study. All sources must be properly cited and referenced.
Write an essay that clearly addresses the following for the wicked problem you identified:
–Explain the background of the urban planning problem being addressed
–Discuss why the problem is a “wicked” one:
–Why is the problem itself difficult to define?
–Why are the causes of the problem uncertain?
–Why is there no obvious solution?
–How is the problem linked to other problems?
–Discuss the public sector and private sector stakeholders involved, and how conflicting values contribute to
the “wicked” nature of the problem
Your written essay should be roughly 2-3 single-spaced pages in length, and should be written in essay format
(i.e. include an introductory and concluding paragraph, and content paragraphs consisting of well-structured
complete sentences).
Assignments are due Monday 1/29 by 4:50PM. Assignments should be submitted electronically as a Word or
PDF document under the “Assignments” tab on Blackboard before the due date and time. After that point,
the link will no longer be visible. NO late essays will be accepted.
All essays should reflect your own individual work. Direct quotes must be cited properly using a consistent
citation style throughout. Be sure to include a list of the 3 (minimum) sources used to complete the
assignment.
Your essay should be thoroughly proofread for spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors. Essays
containing excessive proofreading errors will not be accepted for credit.

Objective: A literary analysis interprets one or more aspects of a literary work. An analysis does not summarize the work; it takes a position on some aspect of the work and is supported with documented evidence from both the primary and secondary sources
The Assignment: After a careful examination of your reading, look for a perspective or position that reflects your understanding of some aspect of the work. Develop an original thesis regarding 1 or 2 theme(s) in “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost from book Backpack Literature, X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia (your primary source): Write a 3-page critical analysis of how the poet develops the theme that you think is in the poem. To do this, select one or more poetic techniques (symbolism, imagery, sound, point of view, speaker, figurative language, rhythm, meter, etc) and demonstrate how that technique is used to develop the theme you are analyzing. Before you begin writing, compose a detailed list of critical observations about the poem. Include significant details, descriptions, and relevant/important quotations that advance the poem’s theme. Then find at least one secondary source from the library’s databases and utilize pertinent information from it to support your analysis.
Writing Suggestions:

• Introduction: Include an attention statement to engage your reader. Include the poet’s name, title of poem, and relevant background information necessary to establish a meaningful context for the reader to understand your argument.
• Thesis Statement: In “title of work,” [name of author] uses such-and-such technique(s) to develop the themes of such-and-such.
o In “A Worn Path,” Eudora Welty employs symbolism and characterization to develop Phoenix Jackson’s immortality and love for her grandson.
• Argument: Analyze and explain HOW the technique(s) used by the poet develop(s) the theme in each body paragraph.
• DO NOT Summarize. Assume an intelligent audience. Summary should only be used to support claims in your argument.
• QUOTE the primary source often.
• Validate your argument with information/quotations from your secondary source.
• Support your thesis throughout your essay — Simultaneously employ analysis and explanation.
• Your essay must be documented correctly and carefully. Be sure that you handle all the mechanics of quoting and documenting material correctly.

Paper Formatting: MLA documentation style: 12 pt, Times New Roman font, 1” margins, typed, double-spaced, stapled, numbered pages, name as a header, original title, properly document sources (in-text and works cited page), works cited page

Consider and comment on each of the following: (1) The risks and benefits of outlawing “dangerous” breeds of dogs through Breed Specific Legislation (BSL)? (2) The seriousness of the problem from a public health perspective (accidental or intentional death or injury from various causes), (3) Social impact (that is how victims of dog-bite-related fatalities and the owners of innocent dogs are affected), (4) What factors have been shown to be associated with dog bite fatalities?
******For example, for the topic of Breed Specific Legislation, you are asked to consider whether or not dangerous breeds of dogs be outlawed through Breed Specific Legislation (BSL)? Consider the evidence, seriousness of the problem from a public health perspective, social impact, and rights of non-human organisms, and the effectiveness of BSL with respect to saving lives.. Review the current national drug policies in Canada, England, and the Netherlands. Compare and contrast the various policies and then provide an assessment of whether or not these policies would be viable to institute in the U.S.

The Early Republic and the American Civil War
Introduction:
The adoption of the Constitution in 1787 established a strong federal government for the United States and codified the principles of a country that balanced the interests of divergent political, social, religious, and economic groups. The logistical necessities of organizing these interests on a federal level contributed to the establishment of national political parties during George Washington’s first term in office. Though President Washington warned of the dangers of factionalism in his farewell address, the advantages these organizations possessed for achieving their policy goals made parties an integral part of the political system. During the first half of the nineteenth century, the United States experienced a period of tremendous territorial expansion. The challenges resulting from the spread of political and social institutions—most notably, slavery—across the continent deepened sectional divisions into a national crisis by the 1850s. The Civil War was the bloodiest conflict in American history, and the war and its aftermath profoundly altered the political, social, and economic characteristics of the United States.

In this assessment, you will explain the characteristics of the First Party System in the United States and its legislative consequences. You will also examine the growth of the sectional divisions in the United States during the nineteenth century leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War.

Requirements:
A. Explain (suggested length of 1–2 paragraphs) the reasons for the rise of partisan politics in the Early Republic (i.e., major conflicts and concerns, development of the First Party System).

What are the receptors for the hormone: Cytosolic , nuclear, membrane-bound? Dimer? Monomer? How are these regulated?
Note: Figures would be greatly aid in the presentation(e.g. metabolic pathways of the hormone)
What condition (e.g. progesterone in menstrual cycle, insulin in diabetes and obesity) involves the hormone?
D) A short paragraph of closing remarks.
Term Paper. The term paper should be 12 typed, double-spaced pages, reviewing the most current literature on an endocrine-related topic. You may use books, but not as primary sources, and only to clarify concepts in your mind. Possible topics might be, but are not limited to:
• The roles of leptin and ghrelin in satiety
• The molecular basis of insulin-stimulated glucose uptake
• The effects of (intense) regular exercise on the maintenance of diabetes
• The role of estrogen in calcium homeostasis
• The molecular reasons of estrogen (hormone) replacement therapy
• Anabolic effects of growth hormone
• Regulation of growth hormone
• Steroid hormone pharmacology (e.g., for inflammation)
• Melatonin and circadian rhythms
• Iodine regulation in the thyroid
• Insulin-like growth factor (be more specific)
• The roles of glucagon and insulin in blood glucose balance
• The effects of anabolic steroids on testosterone production
• Any hormone-based disease (e.g., diabetes mellitus, PCOS)
• Any hormone-based condition (e.g., what happens during aging, hirsutism)
