Discussion: Integrating the Research Process

About 15 years ago, before evidence-based practice became a standard to which to aspire, a professor found an article describing a treatment

program for substance-abusing African-American women that incorporated their children and aimed to preserve their families. The program was

built around principles of African-centered theory. The professor thought the program appeared well designed and heartily urged students to

study the article and possibly find ways to imitate the program ideas, if not the program itself. A few years later, the professor, having

continued her education, especially in the area of research, searched for a follow-up on the program, perhaps reporting outcomes and evidence of

effectiveness. No research evidence on the program appears in the scholarly journals. In fact, no evidence that the program continues to exist

at this time has been found. The fact that what appeared to be a promising practice approach did not endure or have the opportunity to benefit

from evaluation is unfortunate.

Note: This week you will work as a class to create a plan for evaluating the rite of passage program described in the assigned article. Each

member of the class will be assigned one step of the research process:
1.Research problems and questions
2.Finding and using existing knowledge
3.Focused research questions and research hypothesis
4.Research methods
5.Sampling issues and options
6.Measurement
7.Data acquisition
8.Data collection instruments
9.Analyzing data
10.Disseminating research findings

To prepare for this Discussion, read the Poitier et al. study and then revisit what you have learned about your assigned step of the research

process. Consider what would be the most important information to share with your colleagues about that step. Together the class will create a

research plan for evaluating the rite of passage program described in the assigned article.

By Day 3

Post an explanation of your assigned step of the research process and how you would complete that step.

Nurse/Patient Empowerment

Nurse/Patient Empowerment
As a nurse, you are the individual who has the ability to empower patients in the decision-making process pertaining to their health care. In addition,

you are in a unique position to empower your nursing colleagues to improve job satisfaction and use performance indicator data from dashboards to effect

social change.

For this Discussion, you will analyze the use of quality improvement data and discuss how this data can help empower both patients and nurses.

Respond to the following:
•What are the best strategies the nurse can employ to empower patients and support patients’ rights to improve quality of care? (Some considerations to

keep in mind may include: providing information on effectiveness, risks, and benefits of alternative treatments.)
•In what ways can NDNQI data from dashboards or quality improvement data be used to support nurse empowerment in practice?
•How has your institution empowered the nursing staff through the use of quality improvement data?
•Provide an example of how you have personally empowered either a patient or a fellow nurse.

e-portfolio

e-portfolio
Length: Each e-portfolio should be around 500 words.

This is an individual assessment. In other words, the e-portfolio is to be maintained by every student individually.
The e-portfolio assignment aims to enhance your weekly learning and teaching as per the weekly topic and maximise your engagement with the course resources (please see weekly topics under Schedule in this course profile).

As a learning tool, e-portfolio will enable you to accumulate evidence of your learning during the term. In this assignment, you are required to research at least
three references (two academic and one general; and published within the last 3 years) that are relevant to the topics covered in each week from teaching Week-3 to Week-8. So the entries will be made in the portfolio on a weekly basis starting from Week-3 until the end of Week-8 (due date). You will briefly describe and relate the academic sources to the topics covered in that week. You will enrich your weekly e-portfolio with relevant illustrations, video clips, and other multimedia applications as well. As a total you need to have 6 e-portfolio documents, and each e-portfolio carries 5 marks. The length of each weekly e-portfolio should be approximately 500 words.

Marking Criteria for E-Portfolio:
• Knowledge and understanding of the topic
• Quality of academic source
• Relevance of the academic source
• Description of the source

Victims and the Police Victims and Prosecutors

Karmen, Andrew (2016) Crime Victims: An Introduction to Victimology 9th edition. (You need this edition). Wadsworth, Cengage Publishing

Chapters 6 and 7 in your textbook cover the topic of victims and their interactions with the criminal justice system (police, courts,

corrections). Select one aspect of the criminal justice system and write an essay that addresses the role of victims in that setting. In your

essay evaluate how victims are treated, what victims want, and what the criminal justice system can do to better serve them. Specific topics

might include:

Victims and the Police Victims and Prosecutors

Your paper must be at least 5-7 pages in length, word processed, with citations and references in the APA style format. This means you must

include in-text citations and a final reference page. At least two outside sources must be used. Do not simply tell me what is in the textbook.

Rather, develop a strong argument about victims in the role you are evaluating

Managed Care and HMO

The film, John Q, is a film that illuminates the legal concepts, relationships, and issues surrounding the private health insurance system,

social contract, and most importantly access to care. This film also teaches how health insurance and managed care arrangements affect

consumers and their families.
Below are three topics below addressed in the film, along with a question. Answer the question with a brief analysis of the situation.
1. Continuation of Coverage
In the scene in which John speaks with his Human Resources representative, he is told that he now has a $20, 000 lifetime limit on his health

insurance benefits because of the switch to a more restrictive HMO plan and his reduction to part-time status. If John had lost his factory job

instead of being reduces to part-time status, what options would he have for continuation of coverage under federal law, and on what terms? What

would you have done had it been you in the situation?

2. Public Health Care Programs
After John speaks with his human resources representative, his request for authorization for the transplant is denied, and he abandons his

appeal as futile. A succession of scenes shows John trying to secure coverage or funds elsewhere by: applying for Illinois’s Medicaid program,

inquiring at the public hospital, accepting donations from friends, and selling the family’s belongings, including the refrigerator, the car,

and his wife’s engagement ring. John’s applications for public and private coverage are denied, and he unable to raise the required $75, 000

down payment. The hospital insists on releasing Mikey to die at home.

Based on the limited facts provided by the film, do you thin Mikey would have been eligible for Medicare? Medicaid? Illinois’s CHIP program?

3. The Uninsured and Access to Care
In the film, the intern reports that even in the emergency room, “If you ain’t got no money, you get a band aid, a foot in the #$@, and you’re

out the door.” Is the intern correct? What limits, if any, exist with regard to emergency treatment?
Requirements: Assignment should be well written with proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and correct APA format (includes title page, in-text

citation, and references). Also, see grading rubric below
Continuation of Coverage 33pts
Public Health Care Programs 33pts
Uninsured and Access to Care 34pts

IT standards and regulations

The growth of the Internet has exploded over the last 20 years as the result of many innovations in Information Technology. It has changed

the way people interact, receive the news, entertain themselves, and many other things. However, every change that introduces a benefit also

introduces a concern. This is at the heart of the ethical dilemma facing every one that uses information technology today.

Write a multi-paragraph essay that examines how people share information through social networks and digital photography. Identify

technological innovations that make digital photographs and social networking easy to access and simple to do. Discuss the benefits and

concerns related to digital pictures and social networking.
