You work for The Meeting Place, a community program that offers after school activities to inner city youth ages 12-18. The purpose of the program is provide opportunities that help teens succeed in academics, obtain health and well-being, and develop leadership skills. The youth center where the teens meet is located in an urban business district and is either walking distance or on the bus line that is near the teens’ home, schools, and other community resources.

Frontline staff, who work directly with the teens, have shared some anecdotal information with management that there has been chatter among teens about their interest in increasing their physical activity – one of the goals of the agency. There have been a few suggestions such as yoga, crossfit, and running. Your supervisor has come to you and asked that you explore this possibility further to determine if there is in fact enough interest to warrant developing this idea more, and if so, for you to offer some suggestions about how this can be done with little or no cost to the agency. You are asked to explore the internal and community resources available.

Guidelines for Analyzing Cases

Problem and Issue Identification

1. What are the central facts of the case? What assumptions are you making about these facts?

2. What is the major overriding issue in the case? What major question or issues does this case address that merits study at this point in the

course?

3. What sub-issues or related issues are present in the case that merit consideration now?

Analysis and Evaluation

1. Who are the stakeholders in the case and what are their stakes? What challenges, threats or opportunities are posed by these stakeholders?

2. What economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities does the company have, and what is the nature and extent of these

responsibilities?

3. If the case involves company actions, evaluate what the company did or did not do in handling the issue affecting it.

Recommendations

What recommendations do you have for this case? If a company’s strategies or actions are involved, should the company have acted as it did? What

action should the company take now? Why? Be as specific as possible. List several options as well as the pros and cons of each alternative. Be

prepared to discuss why you eliminated those options you discarded and defend your chosen alternative. Mention and discuss any important implementation

considerations. This last step is crucial because recommendations that cannot be implemented are worthless.

Define the Problem:What type of case is this? Decision, Problem or Evaluation? What problem(s) or issue(s) should be the focus for your analysis.

List concepts that can be applied:Write down any principles, frameworks or theories that can be applied.

 

List relevant qualitative data:Evidence related to the quality or character of something or someone.

 

List relevant quantitative data:evidence related to the amount or number of something. Salient financial ratio analysis? Trends over time?

 

Describe the results of your analysis:What evidence have you accumulated that supports one interpretation over another.

 

Describe alternative actions:List and prioritize possible recommendations or actions that come out of your analysis. Remember, choices emerge from your

analysis of what’s going on.

 

Describe your preferred action plan:Write a clear statement of what you would recommend including short, medium and long-term steps to be carried out.

Purpose: To prove that some socio-cultural problem exists, and then to argue what the causes, consequences, and solutions might be. You all

have your topics.
Paper Outline (I’ve listed below the different parts of the paper to help you organize it)
1) Introduction: In the introduction, tell the reader why the issue you have chosen to write about an important one. You could use some facts

to shock the reader’s conscience so that he or she might continue reading. At the end of the introduction, you should tell the reader what

your thesis is: Your thesis should not be a set of factual claims, but should tell the reader what you will argue.
For example, the following is not a thesis: I will show that the cost of public, higher education in California has increased by 250% since

2000. Why? Because the latter is a factual statement that we can check.
On the other hand, here’s a workable thesis: As the cost of public higher education in California continue to rise, more and more and poor

students choose not to go to college, drop out, or go to unaccredited online schools that burden them with excessive debt. There are three

reasons why the cost of education continues to rise: A, B, and C.
2) Facts About the Problem: In this section, you should tell the reader what the facts are regarding the issue you are writing about. Please

feel free to use credible date but make sure to cite your sources.
3) Consequences: A problem becomes a problem because of the consequences. For this paper, please give evidence for TWO consequences and cite

sources. Also, show why the arguments of those who disagree with you are flawed or not based on evidence.
4) Causes of the problem: Give THREE causes of the problem, and make sure to connect the causes to the problem.
5) Solutions: Provide solutions that are workable. Avoid cliches that seem obvious.

For this written assignment, apply the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual on Mental Disorders 5 criteria to the case study of an Adolescent and an Adult

based upon the following information below.

1. Identify all the signs/symptoms each individual demonstrates, which diagnostic criteria he/she appears to meet, and what severity specifiers might

apply to each individual. Provide examples from the case studies to support your conclusions. (Remember, each individual is using multiple substances.)

Maria C. is a 16-year-old Latina female. She smokes marijuana once to twice per week, and drinks alcohol at least one to two weekends a month. She has

no current health problems. Recently she began dating a man several years older than her and they have been using cocaine together once or twice a

month. She plans to graduate from high school next year and attend a local community college; her goal is to work as an Administrative Assistant in an

Attorney’s office, and eventually become a Paralegal.

She lives with her parents and her younger brother, Roberto age 12. Although. Maria has always gotten along with her parents, they found marijuana in

her room twice which resulted in heated arguments. They are also beginning to suspect she has been using other drugs when she returns home late at

night from being with her boyfriend, whose age they are unaware of. When they confronted her with their suspicions, more arguments resulted. They have

threatened to send her to counseling if this continues, but haven’t followed through with their threats. She wishes they would mind their own business.

She has never been in trouble, does not believe her drug use causes problems as she goes to school and has sound academic performance. She does her

chores at home. She realizes her marijuana and alcohol use has increased from her initial use, but doesn’t really see this as a problem (and infrequent

cocaine use is not a concern) because it hasn’t interfered with her school performance.

Case Study #2: Terry M.

Terry M. is an unemployed 26-year-old Caucasian male. He is 5’8″ and weighs 230 lbs. He has been drinking heavily for the last three years. Recently he

began using cocaine a few times a week and has been doing so for 2 months; his drinking has escalated over the last 7 months. He states he doesn’t feel

the effects of alcohol until he has had at least 6 drinks. He has no withdrawal symptoms, however, he has experienced blackouts on a few occasions. He

has had some contact with AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), and has gone to three NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meetings with a friend but does not find them

helpful. He wonders if his cocaine use is a problem and if it is his alcohol use that causes him to have ex
