The Pullman Case

to Writing a Book Précis
A book précis is a short review or summary of a text. It should be informative and meaningful to someone who has not read the book in question. An effective review should contain an analysis of the author’s thesis or point of view, a discussion of the methods/sources that the author uses, and your critical evaluation of the work.

Format
• Must include your name, course number and section (single-spaced) in upper-left hand corner on the first page of your review
• 1-inch margins and the body of your review should be double-spaced, 12pt font
• 2-3 complete pages in length
• Bibliography in Chicago Manual of Style format:
Papke, David Ray. The Pullman Case (Lawrence: University of Kansas Press, 1999).

Content
• A short summary of the scope, content and argument/thesis of the book (generally done in one introductory paragraph)
• Your analysis of how well the author supports his/her thesis (the bulk of your essay)
• Is the book well-written and well-documented with sources?
• What are the strong points of the book? Its weak points?
• Conclusion – would you recommend the book to a reader interested in its subject matter? Why or Why not?

Grammar and Syntax
• This is a formal piece of writing that requires correct English, grammar and punctuation.
• Do not use profanity or slang and address authors and key figures by their full or last name.
• Try to avoid writing in the first person, e.g. “I feel,” “I think.”
• Quoted material must include page numbers, e.g. “[Quoted material]” (Papke, pg. #).
• Avoid quotes that are more than 6 lines long
• PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD!!!

Grading
“A” papers (27-30 pts): Adequately meet above requirements and with few grammatical errors.
“B/C” papers (21-26 pts): Meet most of the above requirements, but lack a complete analysis of the
book and miss some formatting requirements. Will have grammatical errors that detract from the paper. Paper may have been late.
“D” papers (18-20 pts): Paper did not fully address the assignment and above requirements. Paper includes numerous grammatical errors. Paper may have been late.

Racism & Lauer Fallacies

a 500-700 word essay that shows how and why people could use, hypothetically or in actuality, EACH of the nine (9) Lauer fallacies to explain RACISM.
After explicating the (il)logic of the fallacy, provide a supporting example by mimicking the language of someone expressing the fallacy; FOR EXAMPLE, “I had two Ivy-League educated bosses, and both were incompetent, and that’s why I don’t think graduates from elite colleges make good managers.

Entrepreneurship

Prepare a case study based report on the “ life experiences” of entrepreneur. The case report should be based around in depth interviews with 2 entrepreneurs and would ideally include people who have experienced failure as well as those who have experienced success, and also those who are new to entrepreneurship as well as people with considerable entrepreneurial experience. To get the greatest benefit from this exercise you need to build rapport with your entrepreneurs and get them to “open up” to you; talking about the things they have experienced and how it felt … you need to talk them, not administer a questionnaire!

Required 3500-4000 words
Due in by Thursday 21st September
In-depth interviews with 2 entrepreneurs
Ideally a range of entrepreneurial experience and success/failure.

Tasks
Identify and obtain appointments with suitable 2 entrepreneurs
Prepare a list of discussion questions and probing questions to structure your interviews
Conduct the interviews
Write each interview up as a case
study
Identify the key points and discuss them.
What did you learn from the exercise?
Some of the topics you should cover include:
What motivated them to become an entrepreneur?
What were their expectations?
How did they identify the business
opportunity?
How did they fund the venture?
What are the most important lessons they have learned?
What do they like most about being an entrepreneur?
What do they hate the most about being an entrepreneur?
What are the hard things they have had to do?
What are the most enjoyable things they have had to do?
How has being an entrepreneur affected their…
Health?
Enjoyment of life?
Finances?
Leisure? Family?

How have they changed, as a person, as a result of their entrepreneurial experiences?

How have their relationships changed?
What ethical dilemmas have they
encountered?
What do they regret about their entrepreneurial career and what would they do differently if they had their time over again?
How do they deal with significant failure and/or success?
What do they believe are the key determinants of success?
What critical points/cross roads have they encountered where their venture “could have gone either way”
What entrepreneurial training have they had and/or need?
How have they built their networks, and from where have they received valuable support (and what type of support)?
What are the most dramatic changes (industry, the market, technology, people, etc.) they have seen during their entrepreneurial career?
There is no particular required format for the case-study report, but the report should include a presentation of each case as well as a summary of the over all findings that emerged form the case studies. Rather than being simply a descriptive exercise, the report should show a level of insight and understanding about the life of entrepreneur, the highs and lows, the success factors and how the life/lifestyle has impacted on them and their family. The report should conclude with a discussion of the key points and lessons learned by the student from the study that will better prepare the student for life of entrepreneur.

deepening an idea: lens analysis

goal: You will read your primary text through the “lens” of an idea from an ancillary text, in order to deepen your representation of the primary text problem. Looking at one text “through” another may offer fresh insight into the problem, suggesting ways to think about ideas or arguments that connect or complicate the two essays.

how you’re going to do it: take the idea from the ancillary texts; represent it in a paragraph or two. Then using Key Terms from your primary text that pertain to your D1 representation, juxtapose the ancillary text idea with your primary text. Identify the facts this juxtaposition adds to the problem in the primary text. format according to MLA guidelines.

TOPIC:

The impact of nurse to patient ratios on patient safety and adverse outcomes

My goal is to improve or optimize the current process based upon data analysis using a different approach with continuous monitor of the process. The nurse to patient ratio have a tremendous impact on patient safety, satisfaction and outcomes. I truly believe that if the RN has more time to focus on clinical recovery of each one of his/her patients; he/she will have enough time to stay vigilant and prevent unexpected outcomes.
I truly believe that due to the nurse to patient ratio and not enough assistants (CNAs), nurses do not have the time to do their job placing patient’s safety and lives at risk.
THE TRIPLE AIM

Improving the patient experience of care and outcomes (including quality and satisfaction)
