Synthesis Paper with the theme of Managing conflict in a team setting (developing teams)

Synthesis Paper (Key Assignment Critical Thinking 4.2) Pending
Students will compose a synthesis paper on their experiences of learning and implementing enabling conditions and overcoming dysfunctions as experienced in their teams. The paper should be 10-15 pages in length, double-spaced, include a title page, and conform to APA style and formatting.
Synthesis means putting ideas from many sources together in one essay. After reading the texts and participating in a variety of team activities, students will organize some of the information around a theme or a question regarding developing teams, make generalizations, and then present information (quotes, examples) in a logical way to support their arguments. Remember: a synthesis is NOT a summary, a comparison or a review; a synthesis is a result of an integration of what you heard/read and your ability to use this learning to develop and support a key thesis. Learning to write a synthesis paper is a critical skill, crucial to organizing and presenting information in academic and non-academic settings.
This paper is the Critical Thinking 4.2 Mid-level Assessment and must be submitted to Chalk and Wire. The paper will be graded according to the Critical Thinking Rubric attached at the end of this syllabus and available on the course eLearn site, which requires a student to examine the process of reflection, reasoning and imagining, through which the individual willingly, systematically, and habitually examines and explore statements, problems, issues, beliefs, and social constraints. The graduate demonstrates these competencies at each level: (1) an attitude of intellectual inquiry; (2) information literacy; and (3) critical, analytical, and reflective thinking skills [metacognition]. The minimum acceptable score for this assignment is a 3 on that rubric. If a student does not meet the minimum LLO score, they will fail the assignment and receive no credit for the LLO. These essays must be submitted to both turnitin and Chalk and Wire through eLearn to receive credit for them.
This paper will also be evaluated using the rubric below (as well as the general paper criteria in the BSOL Learning Guide):

COLONIAL AMERICA AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The purpose of these essays is not to improve your writing skills but to
stimulate thinking about issues, questions, and problems raised by your study of American history from colonial
times to the Civil War. The goal is for you to discover, develop, and clarify your own ideas. You should do the
appropriate reading and reflecting; then write in response to the question for 30-35 minutes. You will not be
judged on things like spelling, organization, and grammar. But we will be looking for evidence that you are
thinking seriously about history. Your essays should show that you are wrestling with concepts explained in the
reading, in lectures and films shown in class, and that you have done your reading and reflection before
attempting your essays. For the most part, you will be rewarded for the process of thinking rather than the act of
composing
Assume that you have the heavy if unhappy responsibility to be King George III’s political advisor. The colonists
have sent along documents including the Resolution for Independence, an excerpt from Paine’s Common Sense,
and a copy of the Declaration of Independence found posted in a PDF file on the course Blackboard site and sent to
you as an email attachment. Your responsibility is to draft a two-page rebuttal to the general points made in those
documents. King George will incorporate your arguments into a speech to Parliament in which he will declare his
thirteen colonies in revolt and call on the House of Commons and House of Lords to support a military effort to put
down the rebellion. If he fails because your rebuttal is not persuasive, you will find yourself chained up in the
Tower of London among the rats, waiting to be broken on the rack and trying in vain to make your peace with your
God.

Historical Essay #1: Confederation and Constitution

Historical Essay #1: Confederation and Constitution (due Week 4)

As depression struck the new nation in the mid-1780s, new questions arose about the nature of American democracy. Many conservatives believed that the answer lay in a stronger national government. Most radicals believed it was up to the states to relieve the financial burden of the people. These sentiments fostered a movement for a new constitution. Political differences soon stimulated the creation of political parties.

Compare and contrast the Articles of Confederation with the new Constitution of 1787. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the Articles vis-à-vis the Constitution? Give specific instances that demonstrate the weakness of the Articles (such as the Western problem).

Then analyze the drafting of the Constitution, using specific details to show how the various states (slave vs. free, east vs. west) compromised in order to effectively draft a constitution. Pay particular attention to Roger Sherman’s plan, the Great Compromise, which broke a stalemate that could have been fatal to the development of the new Constitution.

Finally, compare and contrast the debate over ratification between the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. Make sure you cite specific examples from the Federalist Papers to support the Federalist position and contrast it with leading proponents of the opposition (such as John Hancock). Analyze how the debate over a bill of rights illustrates the differences between the two parties. Evaluate the relative success of the Bill of Rights in achieving an effective balance between national and states’ interests.
