Thesis Distinction of the Essential Differences between the Major Thought of Plato and Aristotle

As you work toward your first draft, please continue to review and revise your introduction. Pay particular attention to your thesis. Carefully review the thesis handout to assure that your thesis conforms to all requirements. Remember, your thesis must posit an arguable assertion.
When preparing your introduction, please keep in mind the following general requirements for an effective introduction:
–Do not write in first person. Like your essay, the introduction should be written in third person;
–Your thesis should be posited as the final sentence of your introduction;
–Your introduction should be brief and concise (no more than 4-5 sentences);
–You should avoid using quotes in your introduction.
–An effective introduction establishes your essays topic and posits a thesis.
–Avoid rhetorical questions.

This week you are required to submit a draft of your paper. A “draft” does not imply sloppy, half-baked work–not at all. A draft is the most complete and impeccable presentation you can execute at this point in time. Drafts should be 5-7 pages, use at least 3 of your 5 academic resources, and be impeccably cited and formatted. End references are required, and APA (except for the cover page–not required) should be followed.

Guidelines for the Draft (150 points): Your draft should be a largely finished product, impeccably formatted, and nearly complete. It should have all the APA citation and referencing fully in place. In length, it should be five-to-seven pages.
Guidelines for the Final Paper (200 points): The essay must be nine to ten double-spaced pages in length (not including the title or reference pages). The margins should be no more than one inch (right and left). The essay should be composed in 12-point Times New Roman font. Include a minimum of five scholarly sources. Other sources may also be used, but at least five sources must be academic and scholarly. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, websites ending with the .gov, .org, or .edu, newspapers or other media sources do not constitute scholarship. All of the sources must be documented and cited using APA format.
Rubric for 303 Draft/Final Paper Proposal 150 200 Earned Comments
Introduction/Thesis: There is a clear and focused introduction. The thesis is clear, original, and sophisticated. The ideas embedded in the thesis are appropriate to the length of the assignment (for the proposal 2-3; draft 1, 5-7; final, 9-10). Page count excludes title and reference pages). The content provides quality (not padded, dull writing, repetitive or margin/enlarged font-cheating). Effort and sensitivity to the study is evident. 20 35 45
Paragraphs: Paragraphs are composed around topics, which naturally and organically emerge from a complex, focused, and sophisticated thesis. Each paragraph explores one topic and one topic only. Topics directly relate TO the thesis and are not theses in and of themselves. The paragraph completely and fully develops and explains the topic and provides details, examples, illustrations, and quotations from research as well as from the primary texts. Topics and paragraphs rise above commonplace thinking and summary. Quoted material is used powerfully to support analytical points (and not as padding). There is a graceful transition to the next paragraph. The ideas explored are significant, substantive, and instructive. Ideas/topics support the overarching thesis so that the paper is a unified whole, and not a concatenation of appended mini-essays. 20 35 45
Grammar/Mechanics/Style: Grammar refers to the correct usage of Standard American English. Mechanics refers to idiomatic conventions (capitalization of proper nouns, spelling, and punctuation). Style refers to persuasiveness, sophistication, wit, and transcendant quality. Sentences should be varied in length and complexity without loss of clarity or precision of meaning. Style makes a paper a pleasure to read. 15 30 40
Format: APA format has been observed. Headers, margins (1” all around), alignment, double-spacing, Times New Roman font and 12 pt. font size are correct. Pagination is in the upper right of the page. Citations are scrupulously observed in-text and have a matching full reference on a reference page with hanging indents (also formatted correctly—double spaced in TNR 12 point font) Both in-text and full references are complete according to the APA style sheet. 10 25 35
Writing for the Humanities: Composing for the humanities is “technical” in its own way. Students are to read broadly in philosophy, art, literature, political science, and history; and are to show that they can bridge conceptually across humanistic inquiry, innovate meanings that are not apparent at the surface of texts, locate controversies and conflicts that are worthy of researched exploration, and show depth and focus of contemplative thought and character in conducting work of this kind. Progress throughout these assignments is also valued. 10 25 35

Course Project Final Paper Rubric Total Points Possible Total Points Earned
Ideas/Content: Ideas are strong and relevant to a humanities paper. The thesis includes a clear statement of purpose and sensitively explores its subject matter. It is supported with effective, specific, and relevant details selected with a humanities audience in mind. The body of the paper is nine-to-ten pages of text (not including the title page and references). 50
Organization: The paper offers a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The writing is structured to enhance meaning. Transitions are used to move from point to point. Transitions provide logical sequence appropriate for the purpose. Each paragraph ends with an original statement that connects to the thesis. The paper is coherent, sensible, and flows satisfactorily. 50
Word Choice: The language is rich, effective, natural, precise, and vivid. Words used to convey images are appropriate to the audience and purpose. Vocabulary is varied, specific, and accurate. It is appropriate for college-level writing. The paper avoids passive voice, using active verbs and care is shown to both diction (word choice) and syntax (word order). 10
Sentence Fluency: Sentence structures vary and contain no major flaws such as run-on sentences, fragments, and verb errors. Sentences add interest and flow to text. There is strong control over simple and complex sentence structures. The writing exhibits “voice” and purpose. 15
Mechanics: The paper reflects correctness of expression and has been edited for spelling, style, grammar, and punctuation. 25
APA Formatting: The paper is double-spaced and is in a 12-point Times New Roman font. The references are presented as double-spaced with a “hanging” indent. The APA title page is not required or desired for the purposes of this course. Let’s be green. 20
References: There is a minimum of five academic sources. The references page includes full citations, and in-text citations are included when material is used from a source. Sources do not exceed 30% of the content and are cited correctly (in text and in a full reference page). 30

Merger & Acquisition Project Proposal  and Outcomes

The final project for this course is the creation of a merger proposal for two companies. This is an individual project. You will choose two companies and will have to analyze and then propose a merger. The purpose of this project is to simulate the aspects of a real world merger. This project is divided into three milestones, submitted in Module Three, Module Seven, and Module Ten.

To successfully complete this project, you will be expected to apply what you have learned in this course and should include several of the following course outcomes and learning objectives:

• Analyze the role of corporate restructurings in the corporate world by assessing the value added and synergy from mergers and acquisitions
• Compare and contrast mergers and acquisitions by examining each and evaluating the effect on corporations
• Analyze the financial and economic impact of mergers and acquisitions by applying the principles of capital structure, firm valuation, cost of capital, capital budgeting, and quantitative risk assessment
• Analyze the potential success and/or failure of a merger deal by reviewing the post-merger performance and valuation of the company
• Apply managerial decision-making strategies with mergers and acquisitions to companies, based on comprehensive research and analysis of recent, similar deals
• Present scholarly papers through research, preparation, and analysis of contemporary merger and acquisition issues

Main Elements
Part I: Introduction ( 3 to 4 Pages )
• Choose two companies in the United States.
• Describe the companies and their products and respective industries.
• Provide a brief analysis of their annual financial reports (last three years).
• Provide a trend analysis of financial ratios over the three years. In your trend analysis, analyze the company in terms of liquidity, profitability, market value, and capital structure.

Part II: Analysis ( 3 to 4 Pages )
• Describe why you see synergistic effects between the two companies.
• Describe the potential growth after a merger.
• Support your arguments based on financial information of Milestone One.
• Do you anticipate any anti-takeover measure from the target company? If yes, what would you advise the bidder?
• Are there any anti-takeover measures that apply to these companies? If yes, include them here.
• Could there be agency problems in a potential deal? From the bidder’s standpoint? From the target’s standpoint?

Part III: Proposal ( 3 to 4 Pages)
• Examine and describe the post-merger company (valuation, competitive advantage).
• Conclude by presenting a strong case to the executive management teams. Your goal is to sell the project as a successful merger for both bidder and target companies.
• You must have evidence based on research and using industry analysis and company valuation strategies. Be sure to include counterarguments as needed.
• Do you anticipate any issue on the post-merger company (corporate culture, management structures, etc.)?

Cruise Industry Management

You will prepare a research paper that critically engages any issue in the cruise industry that is of interest to you. It must be different from your group presentation topic, although it can be in the same broad topic area. Also, it should not replicate material covered in the lectures. During the first class (Week 1), an overview of the course lecture content will be provided so that you can begin thinking about your topic as soon as possible.

More specifically, the paper will
• describe the situation with regard to the designated issue,
• explain why this situation exists or existed, and
• prescribe strategies that could result or is resulting in optimal outcomes for relevant stakeholders. These strategies may be derived from the literature, and/or may consist of your own suggestions based on your critical analysis of the issue.
Information Sources

You will base your research on secondary material (e.g., academic journals, trade publications, Internet, books, travel guides, newspapers, social media, etc.). You are required to use at least 15 sources in your final written report, of which at least 5 must be ‘academic’ (e.g., journal articles, academic books). If you are unsure whether a particular source is academic or not, please check with your lecturer. All sources must be cited and sourced using proper APA formatting protocols.

For referencing support go to the Library webpage (http://www.griffith.edu.au/library/workshops-training/self-help-resources/referencing/). I have also included the OWL Online Writing Lab at Perdue (see Learning@Griffith – Assessment) as an additional resource since it explains in-text citations and how to cite Internet sources.
Due date

For proposal email: August 21, 2015.
For final research paper: October 9, 2015, 6 pm. Your paper must be submitted through Turnitin; hard copies will not be accepted.

Structure

The following report outline should be followed:

Title Page (include title, course name, student name, and word count)
Table of Contents
1.0 Introduction (include statement of purpose, method, outline)
2.0 Description of the topic (with sub-sections)
3.0 Explanation for the patterns (with sub-sections)
4.0 Prescription; suggested strategies for optimal outcomes (with
sub-sections)
5.0 Conclusions (summary of main findings)
Appendices (if required)
Reference List (APA)
Word length

The text will consist of about 2,000 words (+/- 200 words), not including the title page, table of contents, figures, tables, appendices and reference list. The text length must be noted on the title page, since Turnitin will count everything. All sources listed in the Reference List must be cited in the paper, and all citations must appear in the Reference List.

• Do you write in a direct, clear, non-verbose style?
• Is your paper free from spelling mistakes and typos (do not rely on spell check!)
• Are direct quotations used sparingly and only when absolutely necessary?
• Do your citations and References follow acceptable parameters of APA style?
• Do you use tables, figures and appendices to usefully augment your text, and are these of a high quality?
• Does your paper have a sharp, professional appearance?

How would the four frames frame motivation

Individual Essay
An essay requires the systematic investigation of a topic and the development of a written argument.
Essays assess cognitive and research skills. Essays are expected to develop coherent arguments, be
founded on thorough research, and provide insight into the topic area.
This unit is about how people and organisations behave. An important aspect of behaviour is
motivation. Each of Bolman and Deal’s four frames would tend to view employee motivation, and
particularly how it is achieved, differently.
Your Task…
Your task is to discuss how each of the four frames would suggest approaching motivating
employees. You must relate each frame’s views to theories of motivation that we have covered in
class or that you have come across in your independent literature reviews and searches. You may
focus your discussion on how motivation is conceptualised by each frame and how each frame
suggest it should be managed. You may highlight the blind spots of each frame. That is, what is the
frame missing in your view and why is it important? It is important to demonstrate understanding both
of the frames and of theories of motivation and the relationships between the two.
In establishing your views you are encouraged to discuss with your group and with class mates. You
are also encouraged to discuss the topic with your lecturer (and we will discuss it in class). In
particular you will have to read many sources (and refer to a number of them in your essay). Start
early as the assignment is a major part of the unit!
I strongly recommend getting a good understanding of the readings relating to motivation (see topics
and readings on iLearn). There are also a number of references below, some of which you are
expected to have read and referred to. In addition, searching for literature on the topic is an essential
part of this assignment. There are a number of ways of finding scholarly articles or books. The most
useful for you will be searching the library databases for books and articles
