This is a reflective journal describing your experience in a science classroom and physical education classroom. Below are guides for your observation journal entries. The journal does not have to be an extensive document, but it will be useful to type your thoughts/observations, approximately two-four paragraphs per prompt.
Week 1– Observation Focus: Context: What is the context of the school: student body make-up, grades, general classroom demographics, the school environment, classroom setting, school morale, physical environment, social environment of the school and classroom you are observing, etc.? What is the science curriculum in the classroom?

Week 2– Observation Focus: Student Diversity: Who is a student least/most like me? How do I teach science for this student, and other students of linguistic, cultural, academic, and social diversity? How different are the students I am observing and will teach? How can you assess what students know and understand in science? What kinds of assessment practices are being used in their science classroom?
Week 3– Observation Focus: Science Instruction: Is science being taught? How is science being taught? How are students learning and understanding science? What teaching strategies is the teacher using? Do students really understand science? What are students learning in other areas that can be used for making science more relevant and easier to understand? Where could you see science integrated into the regular classroom curriculum?
Physical Education Instruction: How do these children understand physical education and health? Do they talk about any objectives included in the state standards?
Analyze your observation and your interviews in relation to the 3 health and physical education standards. Where does the school seem to meet or exceed the standards? Where does it seem to fall short of meeting the standards?

Week 4– Observation Focus: Science Communication: How well do students talk about science in the classroom? How well do students make connections between personal talk and language and the language of science? Record some specific examples of what students say in the science classroom where they are communicating their science understanding. How can you help students talk about science in ways that build their understanding of science?
Week 5– Reflection: Re-read your four journal entries. What did you learn about elementary science from observing and working in this classroom? What did you learn from the classroom teacher and the science teacher? What factors seem to be important in teaching and learning science?

As economic times change, management styles have changed accordingly. New concepts and issues of management styles have been analyzed, synthesized, and evaluated to meet the changing needs of the marketplace. The concept of change management has gained great acceptance and/or disapproval by all sectors, including civilian and military.

Katzenbach (1995) wrote that “Real change leaders are the linchpins connecting three critical forces for organizational change and performance: top leadership aspirations (what are we trying to become?); workforce energy and productivity (how will we climb the mountain?); and the marketplace reality (what do our target customers truly seek, and what can and will our potential competitors really do?) (pp. 8-9).

Analyze the changes in the field of Business Administration/Accounting to determine if there have been periods of time in which leaders in the field, as well as actual practitioners in the field, have had to address the issue of change management. Specifically, this analysis should be based on a synthesis of the current literature (and literature no older than 1995) to demonstrate how leaders in your field of study have addressed the issue of change management – as well as any changes in management style. Suggest Tylenol for mild pain.
A history of frequency and reason for using Ibuprofen is required from H.M. If this is a rare occasion, it may be benign to use this, but if he is using ibuprofen on a regular basis daily for mild pains, he should be advised to change to Tylenol due to the interactions between Ibuprofen, aspirin and Warfarin which will increase the risk of GI bleeding. Ibuprofen will also reduce the anti-platelet effect of aspirin (Drugs.com, n.d.a; Li, Fries, Li, Lawson, Propert, Diamond, Blair, Fitzgerald & Grosser, 2014).

Atrial Fibrillation and History TIA

Warfarin/Coumadin. H.M. is on low dose of aspirin which has a risk of increased bleeding when used with Coumadin, but the risk is lower than if he were on 325 mg doses. Given his history of ischemic heart disease and hypertension, TIA and atrial fibrillation, Coumadin and aspirin are both appropriate medications; under the assumption PT/INR are within correct therapeutic range.

Atenolol 100 mg po Daily: H.M. is on Atenolol which is a cardio-selective beta blocker. According to the American Heart Association (2014, p. e222) a class I choice for controlling the ventricular rate in atrial fibrillation is a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker. However, H.M.’s diabetes control may be affected by being on a beta blocker as the blocking of beta 1 masks the fight or flight response and symptoms of hypoglycemia, such as tachycardia, could be masked (Reese & Peterson, 2013). This is not the best blood pressure drug for H.M. because of his diabetes history and ischemic heart disease. I am assuming a controlled blood pressure @ 140/80 while on the beta-blocker, with the following recommendation:

A better course of action would be a baseline BUN and creatinine and then initiation of an Angiotensin-converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitor (Reese & Peterson, 2013; American Heart Association, 2012). The AHA 2012 guidelines for ischemic heart disease, a Class I recommendation in the presence of hypertension and diabetes is for an ACE inhibitor (p.3114). The JNC-8 recommendations for patients < 60, (Mr. H.M. is 55) are to use an ACE or ARB as the initial line of therapy. They do not recommend a beta-blocker as initial hypertensive treatment with diabetes (American Medical Association, 2013, Recommendation #6, p. e7)

Hyperlipidemia

That Mr. H.M. is not on a specific medication for hyperlipidemia in the context of his history of ischemic heart disease may mean that his physician wanted him to try to implement lifestyle modifications such as reduced cholesterol and diabetic diet along with exercise and smoking cessation (Barron, 2013). A trial of lifestyle modifications is foregone with diabetes (Barron, 2013) and a statin should be initiated for H.M. now.

The American Diabetic Association (2015) standards of care for diabetes indicate that Statin drugs should be implemented in diabetic patients based on risk factors alone regardless of LDL level. Therefore, although lifestyle modifications are indicated, this should not delay starting H.M on a Statin drug. He will need a baseline liver profile. Lipitor does not require a follow up lipid panel in 6 weeks (Barron, 2013). Lipitor is a started at 10mg and increased based on response. Absorption of Lipitor is the same regardless of when it is taken, morning or evening whereas some statins are best taken at night (Pfizer, 2015).

Type II Diabetes

Evaluation of H.M.’s baseline renal function and hemoglobin A1c is required in order to make any decisions about his diabetic medications. However, because his Metformin 1000 mg bid is the maximum daily dose (Drugs.com, 2015c) and has been combined with Glyburide 10 mg b.i.d., the indication is, that Mr. H.M.’s diabetes was not well controlled with one medication. Although there is no known changes in pharmacodynamics & pharmacokinetics between Metformin and Glyburide, the maximum recommended dose for Glyburide is 12 mg daily (Drugs.com, 2015c) and H.M. is taking 10 mg twice dialy. Glyburide also peaks at 4 hours and has a terminal half life of 10 hours (Drugs.com, n.d.b). If H.M. is truly needing a second drug twice daily, he may benefit from one with a shorter half life such as Glipizide. Starting dose is 2.5-5.0 mg once daily and titrated according to their response (Drugs.com, 2015b). The effects of Glipizide may be potentiated with the use of Lisinopril (ACE) inhibitor (Drugs.com, n.d.b)

Smoking history. H.M. should be strongly encouraged to stop smoking. A study in 2015, for which I could only access the abstract and conclusions, indicates that metformin appears to decrease the risk of mortality from cardiovascular events with smokers (Paul, Klein Majeed & Khunti, 2015).

Essay Two: The Comparative Analysis

 
During our discussion of the course goals on the first day of class, I told you that we’d explore a variety of thematically-linked texts and practice several different approaches to analyzing those texts. We employed one of those analytical strategies in Essay One when we conducted a close reading of a single text and reported our findings. One of the lessons that we took away from Essay One was the need to think carefully about what we can (or can’t) illustrate or prove when writing about literature. As you know, we were limited to making claims that could be proven by citing examples from a single text.

We won’t face the same constraints with Essay Two, because this time you’ll write about multiple (two or more) texts. Your assignment is to conduct a comparative analysis – a “lens comparison (https://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/pages/how-write-comparative-analysis),” in other words – of two of our textbooks which focuses on one of the following “core” themes:

1) free will
2) agency and power
3) the imagination

The claim should focus on a text from Unit Two – Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot or Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five – and present the second textbook as a comparative example. In essence, then, your thesis will answer the following question: What can be deduced about this theme as it appears in Text A (Waiting for Godot or Slaughterhouse-Five) when compared with the same theme in Text B (another text that we’ve read this semester)?

A preliminary thesis might look something like this:

While Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five might appear to refute the concept of free will, the same theme’s appearance in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot suggests differently; a comparison of the two reveals Vonnegut’s novel as a celebration of agency and self-empowerment.

To be clear, I’m not necessarily endorsing this idea – I’m just suggesting it as a hypothetical example. The explanation that follows, though, would include close readings and analyses of excerpts from each text. In order to prove this claim, the version of free will which appears in Beckett’s play would need to shed light on the same theme in Vonnegut’s novel – perhaps because Billy’s crisis can be considered “existential,” for example, or because Vladimir and Estragon’s plight can suggest a different reading about the nature of Billy’s paralysis.

Regardless of your claim, please also ensure that the essay is organized, concise, grammatically-correct and properly cited using the MLA Citation Style. This essay should be between four and six pages.
