Sentence Fragments English 101

Even if it is punctuated as a sentence, fragments are missing one of the necessary parts of a sentence: a subject or a predicate.

A subject is the noun and supporting clauses of a sentence.
A predicate is the verb and supporting clauses.
Each is dependent on the other to create a full sentence. When one or the other is missing, it is considered a sentence fragment (frag).

Examples:
Larry always working in his yard on Saturdays.
Because he enjoys the flowers and shrubs.
Which help to screen his house from the street.
For example, a tall hedge with a border of petunias.

There are three questions you can ask to determine if a sentence is a fragment:
1) Is there a verb? If not, supply one or attach it to another sentence.
2) Is there a subject? If not, supply one or attach it to another sentence.
3) Is there a coordinating conjunction (and, but, so, nor, yet, for, or)? If there is, remove it or combine it with another sentence.

How to revise phrases written as sentences:
Fragment: Revision:
1. Supply missing elements.

A subordinate clause can sometimes be mistaken as a sentence. These clauses are not considered necessary to a sentence, but they give more information and depth to the writing.

How to revise clauses written as sentences:

Revision: They understood the environmentalists’ concerns. It was sketchy and confusing.

2. Attach the fragment to a related sentence.
Fragment: After they understood the environmentalists’ concerns.

Fragment: Which was sketchy and confusing.
Revision: Carol and I tried to follow Michael’s map, which was sketchy and confusing.

3. Reduce the fragment to single-word modifiers and include in the related sentence.
Fragment: Which was sketchy and confusing.

Whereas the midterm asked you to be reactive to a problem or deficiency in communication as related to some aspect of organizational life, the final project asks you to be proactive and creative in redesigning communication with an aspect of the organization’s external environment.
This environment can include:
• Patients, clients, or other service recipients

• Citizens or other constituents
• Other stakeholders as appropriate
This redesigned communication plan should be based in the mission and functions of the organization, and should be realistic in terms of implementation.
This paper should briefly discuss the organization’s mission and function, considerations of appropriate communication with the focal aspect of the environment given that mission, an ideal set of communication practices with stakeholders (including attention to methods, frequency, and other concrete details), and possible difficulties with implementing this plan.
The final project will be graded based on analytical strength (clarity and depth of arguments), use of course material (how assigned readings are used to make key points and support your assertions), and stylistic considerations (quality of writing, grammar and spelling, adherence to APA Style guidelines, etc.)
This project should include a cover page, between 7-8 full pages of text (2200-2500 words), and a list of references.

Instructions for this order is to write Annotated Bibliography & Literature Review relating to it.

Part 1. Annotated Bibliography.

Identify at least eight (8) scholarly/academic readings/texts that will form part of the final review of the literature relating to it.For each text, write an 80-100 word paragraph that explains how the reading relates to your work. Identify a research problem different from the previous research problems that uses two sets of data that have absolute zero measurements (Ratio data). You may use recorded data or made up data. The n sample size should be at least 10 in each set, but not more than 29. Prepare a paper describing the research problem, research purpose and one research question. Include a definition of the variables you are measuring. List the data. List alpha, the null and alternative hypothesis, and give a brief back ground. Do MegaStat descriptive statistics on the data, graph the data with a runs plot, and do data analysis describing the data. Interpret the Goodness of Fit  p-value to decide if the data is parametric (normal) or nonparametric. Run MegaStat, Hypothesis Tests, Compare Two Independent Groups, T-Test (Pooled Variance), Hypothesized Difference: Zero, highlight both data sets with labels. State your results, conclusion and recommendations. Use the I4 sample as a guide. This paper should be between 900-1200 words. Post as an individual assignment. Title the document file “T-Test I4”.
