READ THE LONGMAN ANTHOLOGY OF DETECTIVE FICTION BY DEANE MANSFIELD-KELLEY AND LOIS A. MERCHINO.
1. Read “The Private Investigator” (p. 205-207), Chandler, “The Simple Art of Murder,” (p. 208-219), and Kaufman and Kay, From “Grafton’s Place in the Development of the Detective Novel” (p. 219-228).
2. Read Hammett, “The Gutting of Couffignal” (229-253), Chandler, “Trouble is My Business” (253-294), Paretsky, “Skin Deep” (308-319), and Haywood, “And Pray Nobody Sees You” (319-331).
3. What expectations and standards changed about the detective genre 1 and 2 with the rise of “hardboiled” authors such as Hammett and Chandler? Do you think that these changes allowed for the possibility of different voices, goals, and perspectives? How are these different voices, goals, and perspectives reflected in the stories from this week?
