Risk Impact on Internationalization of Danish Start-ups

Introduction to the master thesis needs to be written.
The motivation for the study and some of the directions for the academic gap are the following, plase dwell on that:
In the world of high industrialization and development of new technologies there is an emerging industry which has made possible small companies to

scale rapidly in a competitive environment in short time and become leaders over entire industries. The term is relatively new, but there has been an

increasing attention to the so-called start-up industry. This research is motivated by the observation that despite the fact that Danish start-ups have

been heavily funded by the government and have been positioned in suitable business environment, they haven’t shown a remarkable internationalizations.

There are plenty of famous cases of start-ups which have emerged from an idea to a product and went through all stages of company’s development through

a Small Medium Enterprise (SME) up until Multinational Corporations (MNCs). In particular Denmark is one of the leading countries for starting a

company. Denmark is also one of the World’s best test markets, which makes developing and testing a new product very cheap (Ministry of Foreign Affairs

in Denmark, n.d.). It is also one of the most transparent and least corrupted countries in the world. (Haynie 2017) However in spite of all those local

advantages which Danish business environment offers, there have not been notable internationally successful Danish startups. The contemporary literature

offers plenty of reasons for why or why not a start-up will fail, but there is a theoretical gap for particularly Danish startups and their issues with

positioning on the global market. As of similar size, language, culture and close geographical distance to Denmark, Sweden for example has been having

remarkable international success within the start-up sector and innovation. This has led the country to the World’s second “most prolific tech hub in

the world on a per capita basis” (Davidson 2015). Notable examples can be pointed out as: Spotify, Mojang, Skype (Davidson 2015) and Daniel Wellington.

However the purpose of the thesis will not be to make an analytical comparison between Sweden and Denmark but to focus its research and empirically

conclude on the topic why Danish start-ups are underperforming internationally and whether risk is one of the reasons affecting it. Therefore the scope

of the thesis will be only focused on Danish ventures.
The draft of the thesis is uploaded. Please ask for clarification on the subchapters of the introduction. The structure for introduction is in the table

of contents.
