1. One of the key themes in this course has been the negative consequences of neoliberal state policies on poor populations. Elaborate on this point by (a) listing and describing at least four of the main tenets of neoliberalism as described Neoliberalism” and (b) selecting one country we have examined in depth and discussing how neoliberal policies, practices, or ideologies have affected a poor neighborhood or population. Make sure to discuss at least three effects of neoliberalism on the selected population.
2. Lynn Stephen’s concept of “transborder realities” can be helpful in understanding a range of challenges and opportunities encountered by transnational migrants. Please explain what does term means, and (briefly) list some of the borders that migrants to the US must negotiate. Then provide three examples from class readings of different borders that migrants must cross. At least one example should highlight the possibilities for agency or resistance in the act of “border crossing.”
3. Although we often think of “the indigenous” as a homogeneous group united by shared values, practices, and histories, many scholars suggest that this view is over-simplistic and inaccurate. By drawing from at least two readings (and/or the documentary), please provide three examples of how indigenous communities construct and deploy different identities for different purposes. Conclude by providing your own assessment of the potential benefits and disadvantages of using the concept of “the indigenous.”
