Nutrition Label Homework Assignment

Where is our energy coming from?

Data Collection and Selection
1. Select a food item from your kitchen that has a Nutrition Label. It must have at least 2 non-zero values for the categories of fat, carbohydrates, and protein! You will need to include a picture of the label with this handout and your other drawings/charts.The writer can get or choose any nutrition label.
2. Write down the total grams for each of the biomolecules in the table below. Multiply by the given multiplier to calculate the amount of energy for each category. Add up the total calories. Calories is used as a unit for energy.
Biomolecule Amount (grams) Multiplier Total Energy from each Biomolecule (Calories)
Total Fat X 9
Total Carbohydrate X 4
Total Protein X 4
Total Mass Total Calories

Analysis

3. Calculate the percent contribution to the total mass for each biomolecule and make a pie chart of
this information (you may draw it or use Excel, etc.) Color code the chart with carbohydrates in
blue, protein in green, and fat in red. Create a key or legend and a title.
