Examine all of the assigned chapters and documents, as well as the Power Point(s) in the folder. It may be helpful to consider the following:
For this week, FORGET for a moment what you think you already know about the “Bill of Rights.”
- Instead, read the document while considering only the history we have studied the last couple of weeks. Why did James Madison want to protect these specific rights? What events was he responding to?
- For example, Amendment #1, among other things, protects the right to protest (“peacably to assemble”). Given what you know about the role of protests in the Revolution, what do you think Madison meant by “peaceably” (peacefully)? Did he mean it had to be quiet? That protesters could not disrupt traffic? That they needed a permit from the government? Or did he mean they just couldn’t hurt anyone?
- How does Ramsay believe that the formation of the American government is different from other nations?
- What were some of the concerns over the new government?
- How does Tecumseh’s speech illustrate differences between indigenous and American views of land?
- What do the sources “Voice of freedom” reveal about the period we are studying? What insight does each document provide? In other words, how does it relate to the textbook readings “Give me liberty”? The Power Points? Try to place the different sources “in conversation” with each other to understand a time period
- You need to rely less on summary and demonstrate more of your own analysis.You don’t have to use the “one paragraph per source” structure. You might try to look for common themes and connections (or contradictions) between the readings. Synthesize this evidence to support your argument.
