Preparation for the Final Exam
The Final Exam will be opened on the course website by 5 pm on August 27 through September 2 at 11:55 pm PST. Please do not enter the website until you are ready to complete the exam. You will not be able to re-enter the site once you click on the test link. You will have 1.5 hours (90 minutes) to complete the exam.
Remember, books and notes are not to be used during the exam. You have ample time to study your notes, develop your response and be ready for the exam without using any reading materials while you are taking the exam!
Any changes or modifications to the final exam will be e-mailed to you.
Study Guide for Final Exam
You are to select three (3) of the following eight questions to prepare your responses. Each question is worth 40 points.
1. Describe the four principles that are considered useful for creating an effective feedback system. (Clampitt text)
2. The Clampitt text outlines the challenges associated with organizational boundaries as well as the contributing factors that highlight the inherent problems with organizational boundaries. Describe the problems and contributing factors of organizational boundaries and complete your response by identifying one boundary spanning strategy.
3. Summarize the cycle of communication effectiveness.
4. Discuss the full range of cultivating the innovative spirit.

5. Many, if not most of the dedicated public service employees contend that we could utilize certain innovative techniques designed to impact the efficiency and effectiveness of public sector organizations. You are challenged to identify and discuss one innovation strategy described in the Power Points from the Cohen and Eimicke book. Also, if feasible, briefly identify how this innovation strategy could be applied within your organization.
6. One statement in the Cohen text titled “Mastering the Budgetary process, resonated with me. It states, ” Although lack of funding can prevent activities, the presence of funding is never a guarantee that activities will take place”. Oftentimes, public managers must rely on budget analysts and other budget professionals in the preparation of budgets. However, it is important for all public managers to have an understanding and reasonable knowledge about the budgetary process. Please write a response to the following questions:
1. How does a manager handle justifying budgetary requests?
2. What are the political factors that influence the budget process?
3. How does financial control systems impact and/or alter organizational behavior?
7. Just as private organizations continue to transform and undergo change, so are many public sector organizations. You are to write an essay about “surviving and thriving in the public service”. Please draw upon the various reading assignments when developing your response. Identify your source of information. You do not have to use formal citations, just the name of the author or a note that the source information was from a specific course Module.
8. The development of organizational goals and strategies is considered an important aspect of creating a more viable organization. Consequently, define organizational strategy. Also, what is involved in communicating the organizational strategy once it is formulated. Finally, does ethics play a role in organizational strategy?
