REFLECTIVE JOURNAL ENTRY #1: PERSONAL
COAT OF ARMS
OVERVIEW
Students will design and create a personal coat of arms. The coat of arms will represent the students’ values,
identities, and understanding of HRD and needs assessment at this point in the course. The personal coat of
arms will contain 6 images/symbols that address the following questions:
1. What do you regard as your greatest personal achievement?
2. How do you most want to use what you learn in this course?
3. How/why did you choose your major?
4. How would you illustrate the value of HRD in organizations to your best friend?
5. How would you illustrate the value of needs assessment in organizations to your best friend?
6. Which of your personality traits could contribute to your success as an HRD professional?
DELIVERABLES
A. Students will submit a short paper to Assignment Dropbox on Blackboard. The paper should be 2-3 pages
(12 pt. font, double-space) and contain the following elements:
• Description of each symbol in your coat of arms
• A rationale for each symbol and any background information that illustrates why you chose each of
the symbols
• Description of what, if anything, you learned about yourself through this activity
B. Students will also submit an electronic version of the personal coat of arms to the Assignment Dropbox on
Blackboard. If the personal coat of arms was not created electronically, students are permitted to
photograph their creation and upload the photograph to the Assignment Dropbox.
C. During the class meeting following the due date for the coat of arms assignments, students should bring a
hard copy of your coat of arms to the class and also be prepared to describe/explain your coat of arms to
your classmates.
