Method Match assignment

This assignment is the next phase in imagining and designing a research project. Building on the Research Topic you have already proposed, your task now is to think about how to go about researching your question(s). More specifically, you need to choose a methodology: as we’ve discussed, a methodology includes both theories and practical methods.
There are three steps to the Method Match assignment.
1. Look for an MA thesis that is thematically similar to what you are interested in doing. Each MA thesis should include a chapter called “Methodology”; this will usually be the 2nd or 3rd chapter of the thesis. You will likely need to spend some time refining your search terms (as well as publication dates, university/institution, and so on) before you find theses similar to your topic. You will likely also need to download and read the introduction and methodology chapters of a few theses before you find something that is not only thematically similar to yours, but also makes sense to you methodologically. This is your “match”.
2. Begin to conceptualize how you would carry out your own research using the “matching” method you have found. To do this you will need to work on expanding or focusing your research question(s), and as well as brainstorming where, and to whom you might ask your research question(s).
3. Write up your findings. That means providing
• a short description of the topic of the thesis that you have chosen, and the methodology used in that thesis;
• your own brief analysis of why the particular methodology was used in the thesis you chose;
• and finally, some details of how you would use the “matching” methodology to carry out your own research.
Format:2—3 pages, double-spaced, Times new romans,Please provide bibliographic information for your “matching” thesis.

Your first research assignment is to write an argumentative research essay. To begin, you will select a topic
based on one of the six Contemporary Arguments chapters in Good Reasons: Sustainability; Education;
Globalization; Science and Ethics; Privacy; and Regulating Substances, Regulating Bodies. Each of these
chapters contains many subtopics, offering a rich array of topics.
Keeping in mind the characteristics of effective argument presented in class and in Good Reasons, you will first
develop a research question and, later, a focused and debatable claim about the subject that you choose. Your
goal will be to demonstrate the soundness of your viewpoint to skeptical readers, and to do this you will need to
offer a well-reasoned, well-supported, and effectively organized argument. You will also need to address and
refute counterarguments.
While there is not a particular organizational scheme that you must follow, you are encouraged to use one of the
structures presented in class or one of the structures presented in Good Reasons. Regardless of the structure you
use, your essay must be carefully organized and clearly presented with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a
conclusion.
Requirements:
• Your essay must be formatted according to MLA page guidelines (see Chapter 20) and will include intext
citations and a Works Cited page.
• You must cite a minimum of six sources of at least three different types (review notes from class), and at
least one of these sources must come from Good Reasons. Also, you will need to demonstrate your
ability to draw upon these sources in ways that effectively advance your argument.
• Your essay must demonstrate that you are able to quote, summarize, and paraphrase sources
appropriately and skillfully.
• Your essay will be 6 double-spaced pages minimum and submitted to turnitin.com for grading. (The
Works Cited page does not count toward the page requirement.)
• You must not reuse an essay from another class.
Your essay will earn a failing grade (D or F) if it:
• is less than 6 pages long (not including the Works Cited page).
• does not include a Works Cited page.
• has fewer than six sources, and does not include a source from Good Reasons.
• is plagiarized, whether intentional or not.
Before submitting your final draft to turnitin.com, please use the following checklist:
Checklist for Final Essay Draft:

Project Management Final

TAKE HOME FINAL
Each student must complete the Take Home Final. Students should include a cover page with
your name, cohort, and the name of the instructor. You may use material from class discussion,
your reading, or further research. Be sure to give proper credit to your sources of ideas as well
as direct quotes using in-text and full reference citations consistent with APA standards.
Plagiarism is considered a serious offense. It is defined as the copying of more than three
words in a row from any source or using ideas presented in a work without giving the proper
credit to the writer of those words. Any paper submitted with plagiarized material will be dealt
with according to the University catalog and will result minimally in an “F” on the Take Home
Final.
It is helpful to begin each week’s reading by reviewing the questions on the final and taking
notes that will be used in writing the answer. After each class session, continue to add more
notes to each answer. Your journal notes may also prove helpful in providing ideas for your
answers.
The take home final and all supporting information must be posted to Moodle no later than one
week from the last class.
Take Home Final:
Student take home final will be designed around a project of student’s choosing. The project
may be one related to something in the student’s personal life, work life or related to another
organization student wishes to perform a project for.
The subject of the final must involve the following items:
 Meet the definition of a project as outlined in the text and class.
 Student project team must include at least four different team members or resources
(outsourcing) that will be utilized to accomplish the objectives of the project.
 The project must be structured for a client; if personal, student can serve as the client.
 The project must have quantifiable measurements such as units of measure, costs, etc.
 The project must entail at least 20 work packages.
 The final along with all supporting graphs, charts and reports must be submitted in
electronic form and posted on Moodle by 6:00 pm on the due date (within one week of
the last class). The full report length will vary dependent on the number of figures and
appendixes. Each report must include a cover page, table of contents, narrative section
and either figures or appendixes for tables and supporting information. The narrative
section of the report should not exceed 1,500 words. The report is to be submitted using
APA 6th addition format.
Resources:
 Students must use MSFT Project for certain aspects of this final.
 Students may also utilize MSFT Excel or other software to prepare sections of the final.

Qualitative Assignment

Attempt ONE of the following:
“Value of sports”
1. Develop and explain a research design for an ethnographic study to find out about a particular sub-population group of your choice (for example, young people, Aboriginal people, women, the elderly, etc.).
2. Discuss how the purposes of this research and the design of this study might vary if a grounded theory approach had been used instead
OR
“Leadership”
1. Developandexplainaresearchdesignforaphenomenologicalstudytofindoutaboutan aspect of leadership.
2. Discuss how the purposes of this research and the design of this study might be varied if a narrative approach had been used instead.
Word length: 3,000
A sample information letter and consent form may be included in the appendix, in addition to this word allowance, if this is needed.
Advice
Please read this advice before you begin the task.
Learning outcomes:
The intended purposes of this assignment are to demonstrate you
a. Have gained an in depth understanding of two different approaches to qualitative research
b. Are familiar with the requirements and style of writing to produce a concise research proposal
and are able to use these effectively
c. Are able to produce a single research design that is concise, consistent, comprehensive, easy
to read and well justified
d. Can outline concisely how the focal research question and the research design for the same
topic would vary if an alternative qualitative approach were used
Structure: The assignment has two parts, part 1 and part 2.
Part 1: The first task is to produce and explain a research design. The design will include all the elements discussed in the text except the literature review, for example, epistemology, theoretical framework, methodology, methods, sampling, or ethics. For the first task, you will need to explain the rational for the design choices you have made and you will need to ensure that you have used the approach consistently
Part 2:
The second task is to discuss how the research design you have developed would be vary if you used the alternative approach identified in the question.

Focus: Remember, you are producing a single coherent research design to find out about the topic NOT a report on the topic.
a. The research design should provide all the information needed for someone else to conduct the research and analyse the results.
b. You are NOT expected to know anything about the topic of the research, or to research the subject matter for this.
c. Do NOT do a literature review for this task, Instead briefly outline what literature you think might be relevant (for example, provide search terms).
d. You are NOT expected to submit a second complete alternative research design, just discuss the similarities and most important differences.
4. Referencing: Use the text for the qualitative unit (Qualitative Research: Choosing amongst five approaches). It is not good practice to use multiple low quality references for methodology, especially if your only purpose is to increase your ‘reference count’. It is much better to use a small number of good quality references well. You are expected to consult other references to add depth of knowledge (at least five).
5. Presentation: Each of the two parts needs a different format Part 1
Research Design: present the research design (and explanation of the design) in the format of a research proposal.
Part 2
Comparison between two approaches: in this part use a short essay format
6. Length: Be as concise as you can be, whilst meeting the requirements of the task. It is recommended that Part 1 will be longest (about 2,000 -2500 words) and Part 2 will be much shorter (about 500 words). You may include one sample information letter and one sample consent form in an appendix, in addition to this word limit).
