Issues in Global Political Economy:

Marking criteria:

The work is assessed against four main criteria: content; critical analysis; presentation and exhaustiveness of research. The final mark is awarded for the work as a whole.

1. Content. You must deal with your topic in a well-rounded manner, touching upon all major issues and possible (or extant) analyses thereof.
2. Critical analysis. Once you have demonstrated your understanding of the various issues at stake, you are strongly encouraged to manifest a capacity for independent thinking, i.e., to come up with your own creative solution. Simple approval of current actions is to be avoided, in the absence of any arguments stating that no other solution would have been as optimal.
3. Presentation. Your argument should be coherent, well-ordered and full of examples. If a statement is made, the example used to substantiate it should be the appropriate one.
4. Literature review. References are welcome not only to theorists whom we will have studied in class but also to evidence of your own independent reading.

Marks

70 + Identification of almost all the main issues logically linked and accompanied by the relevant critique. Evidence of substantial research and external reading well applied to the question. Confident exposition and discussion of relevant theory and appropriate examples
60+ Identification of most of the main issues logically linked together with some critique. Good coverage of related theory. Very good evidence of knowledge, understanding & analysis. Perhaps limited evidence of external reading and research or limited linkage to “real” examples.
50+ Identification of some of the key issues, with fair evaluation of theory and practice. Good evidence of understanding, knowledge and analysis. Liable to be more descriptive than above.

40+ Identification of at least a few of the important issues, although linkages may not be shown. Poor use of models and concepts. Possibly partial answers that cover some aspects reasonably well but omit other significant areas. Little or no “real life” examples.

Fail
30 – 39 EITHER applies analysis wrongly (in more than one element) OR does not reflect an understanding of the purpose of the concepts. Poor explanations and misses key points. Descriptive. Does not really answer the question.

<30 BOTH Applies theory wrongly in more than one element or wrong analysis applied and applied poorly AND does not understand the purpose of the concepts. Poor explanations, entirely descriptive without key points. Does not answer the question.

20 – 30 Lists key points which would be developed in a longer answer. ALSO outlines a sound approach to question. Demonstrates understanding of the facts and models/concepts relevant to the question.

10 – 20 Lists some of the key points ALSO sound approach to the question; however, some ambiguity evident.

<10 Does not demonstrate a sound approach to the question and reflects poor knowledge of the subject area.

The research essay is limited to a maximum of 2000 words, excluding appendices and the bibliography. Reports are to demonstrate clear evidence of the author’s ability to collect relevant and meaningful information that has been cited correctly and to mount a thoughtful, coherent argument based upon the findings.

Finished assignments must be well structured and demonstrate clear evidence that the student has conducted substantive research on the topic and reflected thoughtfully upon the findings. Sources of ideas appearing in the text other than one’s own must be cited, and bibliographies must be attached. Failure to do so will result in a grade zero.
The project is due by 11.59 pm on Friday 27th November 2015.
It should be submitted via Blackboard.

In terms of judging your academic performance on this essay, we are looking for a number of key elements to be present:

• a clear introduction followed by an argument that offers:
• description of events;
• relevant historical factors;
• suitably appropriate academic sources (see below);
• ability to articulate ideas and concepts;
• a set of pertinent conclusions;
• writing style and expression;

At this stage, markers will be aware that some students may find academic referencing new and possibly a little difficult. To a degree this will be taken into consideration when the marking is undertaken. Assignment 2: Terry V.Ohio 392 U.S. 1, 88 S. Ct. 1868, 20 L. ED.2d 889, 1968 U.S.

The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution limits the power of the police to make arrests, search people and their property, and seize objects and contraband, such as illegal drugs or weapons. These limits are the bedrock of search and seizure law and are ultimately at the root of your right to privacy.

Analyze the following case in preparation for a systematic approach to your synthesis of law and fact:
Write an eight to ten (8-10) page legal Memorandum paper in which you:

1.Summarize five (5) key aspects of Terry v. Ohio.
2.Posit whether or not you believe law enforcement violated Terry and the other men’s right to privacy which the Fourth Amendment guarantees. Justify your position.
3.Examine the dissenting opinion of Justice Douglas, as discussed in the case. Discuss the origins and importance of probable cause as it relates to law enforcement’s discretion to search Terry’s car in this case.
4.Examine the two part test provided by the Court in Terry that first asks whether the officer’s action is justified at its inception; and second, asks whether it is reasonably related in scope to the circumstances which justified the interference in the first place.Discuss whether or not this test leaves officers with too much discretion when making a determination to stop an individual. Provide a rationale for your response.
5.Examine the Court’s holding in Terry that provides that probable cause is based upon the totality of the circumstances. Review the factors that help shape the totality of circumstances, such as specialized knowledge of the officers, investigative inferences, personal observations of suspicious behavior, and information from other sources. Question whether these factors in question are too subjective to establish probable cause. Provide a rationale for your response.
6.Debate the validity of the Court’s holding that “whenever a police officer accosts an individual and restrains his freedom to walk away, he has “seized” that person with the meaning of the Fourth Amendment. Justify your response.
7.Use at least two (2) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Assessment 2

Assessment task:Proposal

Word count or equivalent: 500 words
Assessment briefing:
The proposal is a critical part of the assessment that must be submitted in order for you to pass the module. In the proposal, you will declare the area of interest you intend to explore in the final dissertation, and outline how you intend to go about it. Research questions, methodologies, and time management should feature in the proposal, as well as any other considerations that you feel are relevant.We will think about issues relating to your proposal throughout our time together in semester 1, giving you time to reflect upon and refine your ideas before assessment 2 is submitted. The module leader will read and mark your proposal on the basis of the technical assessment criteria outlined below. Once you have submitted the proposal, you will be expected to stick to the broad title and the general topic when you come to write the dissertation itself.

The proposal is particularly important, because it is the basis upon which your dissertation supervisor will be assigned. Your supervisor, chosen for having in-depth insight relevant to your chosen subject, may advise you to finesse or modify your ideas somewhat, even if the module leader has already approved them. This may be because your supervisor has a more developed understanding of the issues that you wish to explore. Your supervisor may guide you through a number of documented discussions to arrive at a submission that satisfies your interests and our need for academic rigour. Despite any possible tweaks and changes, however, it is expected that you will not deviate radically or entirely from the topic suggested in your proposal.

The proposal must be approximately one side of A4 paper and should include the following:

1. The proposed title of your dissertation;

2. A brief outline of the areas that you intend to cover in the dissertation, including the key research questions you wish to address;

3. A note on your proposed methodology and its suitability for your project;

4. An indication (where relevant) of the primary sources (magazines, television programmes, films, CDs etc) that you intend to use

5. A schedule of work – what you propose to do and the date by which you will have completed it

Assessment criteria:
The proposal will be marked on:
• Evidence of independent preparatory research;
• Ability to articulate an appropriate research question or set of research questions;
• Knowledge and understanding of which methodological approachesmay be appropriate for the chosen topic;
• The clear presentation of your work, together with evidence of careful editing and proofing (including accurate and consistent referencing).
