International Finance– BMW: Currency Hedging 2007

Topic: International Finance– BMW: Currency Hedging 2007
Paper instructions:
Case Analysis

The detailed analysis of the case should start with a one-half page executive summary with the issue and the major recommendations. It will then include an introduction, where the students illustrate the problem faced by the firm and its background, a main section that will provide the details and evaluate the alternatives, and a conclusion with the specific recommendations. For each case, I will provide a few questions to help with analysis. However the write up should not be limited to answering such questions. I expect the reports to be 8 pages (double-spaced, 12 point font) maximum, excluding the summary, tables and graphs. Supporting tables, spreadsheets and graphs (the exhibits) are limited to 10 pages. The exhibits should be referred to in the text of the paper as they are needed to support the argument being made. Exhibits that are not needed should not be included and all exhibits should be referenced in the paper.
The case can be found here:
http://educompcentrallibrary.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/hrvd-bmw-currency-hedging-2007.pdf

Questions to be answered in the case
• How would you evaluate BMW’s transaction and economic exposure?
• What do you think of BMW’s hedging strategy?
• Would you consider a range of 1.15 to 1.17 USD/Euro to be an appropriate equilibrium rate? How would you forecast future exchange rate?
• According to BMW’s net exposure and its hedging strategy, how big do you think the impact of currency fluctuations is on profits and its stock market value? How would you quantify it?
• BMW likes to follow a natural hedging strategy for its operations. How can this strategy help the firm in minimizing its USD exposure?

Adam Smith and Rousseau

Topic: Adam Smith and Rousseau
Paper instructions:
one inch margins, 12 pt font, Times New Roman

Must cite in the text and when making citations cite the actual page and line number in the text.

Both Smith and Rousseau are concerned with economic domination, but their accounts of how it arises, and how to solve it, seem importantly different. Compare their accounts of domination, and argue for the superiority of one position.

MUST USE PRIMARY SOURCES ONLY AND USE TEXTUAL EVIDENCE!!!

REFER TO THESE TEXTS:

Rousseau: Discourse on Inequality

Rousseau: Social Contract Parts 1-2, Gracchus Babeuf /Sylvan Marechal: Manifesto of the Equals

Adam Smith: Theory of Moral Sentiments

Adam Smith: Wealth of Nations

Interpret the text yourself.

No personal preferences.

1) Does the paper take a position on the topic and provide an informed and thoughtful defense of that position? Are counterarguments addressed?

2) Does the paper provide an accurate interpretation of the relevant texts and demonstrate understanding of the ideas and arguments found therein?

3) Does the paper make effective use of textual references and provide analysis of the textual references employed?

4) Does the paper answer the question? Does it clearly articulate its reasoning? Is the writing graceful and free of error?

You’re expected to make an argument

This means a clear thesis statement in your introduction, a preview of what you will argue and the line of your argument (e.g. “I will argue that Aristotle’s claim that ‘man is a political animal’ is convincing for reasons x, y and z but that it fails to account for a and b. NOTE: “I will explore this text /question and hope to reach some conclusions” or such like is not a thesis).

Aspen Ski Company case study (50 points): This case study and the discussion of the accompanying readings are utilized to introduce the challenges and benefits associated with operating a hospitality business in a sustainable, environmentally responsible manner. (LO11)

Detailed instructions:

The purpose of this assignment is to allow students to consider how a company’s desire to operate in a environmentally responsible, sustainable, or “green” manner may impact a firm’s operations. To accomplish this, students will be required to read the Aspen Skiing Company case study, parts ‘A’ and ‘B’, by M. W. Toffel and S. Van Tice, and then respond to each of the following prompts:

1. Outline the scope of the Aspen Skiing Company’s operations. What are the various business operations in which Aspen Skiing Company is engaged?

2. Please explain the environmental impact that a ski resort has on the environment. Can a ski resort operate in a way that ensures that there is absolutely no negative impact as a result of the resort’s operation?

3. What steps has Aspen Skiing Company taken in order to minimize the negative impact of their operations? How do these steps impact the customer? How do they impact the resort’s cost structure?

4. In reference to the Aspen Skiing Company’s physical product, please outline how the company’s commitment to sustainable operations has and/or may impact the design of their physical product.

5. In reference to Aspen Skiing Company’s services, please outline how the company’s commitment to sustainable operations has and/or may impact service design.

5. Explain how Aspen Skiing Company’s commitment to sustainability has and/or may impact its supply chain.

6. Please respond to Aspen Skiing Company’s handling of the Kimberly-Clark boycott. Do you think that they made an appropriate decision? Do you feel as though they are ‘greenwashing’? Do you feel as though they compromised too much in their decision to end their boycott? Please explain your responses.

The two additional Harvard Business articles The Green Conversation (2008) by Hoffman et. al. and The Sustainable Economy (2011) by Chouinard et. al. may provide you with additional insight relative to your responses.

Please submit your responses to the seven (7) prompts above as a Word or PDF file attached to this assignment tool in Canvas utilizing a 12-point font, double-spacing with one-inch borders. You may utilize any standardized format for references. Refer to the grading rubric prior to completing the assignment to see how points for this assignment will be awarded.
