Assignment: Beethoven Symphony No. 5

Assignment: Beethoven Symphony No. 5

Beethoven began composing Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 in 1804, but set it aside until 1807 and completed work on it in 1808. Since its first performance in Vienna in 1808, at a marathon concert of all Beethoven works that lasted about 4 hours, the 5th Symphony has held a place of importance in the classical music repertoire. It is perhaps the most famous symphony ever written, and has entered into today’s popular culture through its use in rock and roll, advertising, movies, etc.

Beethoven was deaf when he wrote this symphony.  He had already been through a great crisis in his life because of the growing deafness (read Beethoven’s Heiligenstadt Testament URL- http://www.all-about-beethoven.com/heiligenstadt_test.html ). In spite of the challenges of going deaf as a musician and composer, Beethoven championed on, and the years from 1804-1808 were extremely productive.

The 5th Symphony begins with the famous four-note motif “short-short-short-long,” with a drop in pitch on “long.”  The rhythmic component of the motive is used as a building block for nearly every aspect of the movement.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 is in four movements:

Mvt 1: Allegro con brio

Mvt 2: Andante con moto

Mvt 3: Scherzo–Allegro

Mvt 4: Allegro

Listen to the entire Symphony and answer the following questions:

  • After listening to the first movement, write down your reaction. What kind of emotional impact do you think Beethoven was trying to convey with this movement?

  • The opening motive is used in nearly every measure of the first movement. Many claim that the rhythmic component of the motive (short-short-short-long) can be heard in all of the movements. Do you hear any evidence of the opening motive (especially the rhythm) in movements 2, 3 & 4? Which movements do you hear the motive?

  • Do you think Beethoven had a reason for using the rhythmic motive throughout the symphony? Explain.

  • In contrast to the Classical Era’s focus on “reason” and emotional reserve, the 5th Symphony of Beethoven exemplifies heightened expressiveness. It is interesting to note that nineteenth century critics would often try to explain the emotional and psychological meaning behind works of music, especially if the emotions could be linked to the psychological state of the composer at the time it was written. In light of this trend, there is a story that Beethoven declared that the opening motive (short-short-short-long) represented “Fate knocking at the door.” Music historians today are not sure of the validity of this story, but do you think that it makes sense? Consider what kind of struggles Beethoven must have been going through as a famous composer and pianist who was facing the effects of permanent deafness—be sure to read the Heiligenstadt Testament.

  • When you get to the last movement, describe the emotion you think the entire symphony ends with. Did Beethoven succumb to fate or triumph over it?

case study considers a fictitious university, the University of Uriarra

The class this week is concerned with Acquisition and implementation – application portfolio development and maintenance.

University of Uriarra (part 1) – applications portfolio

The tutorial questions for this week involve case study.  The case study considers a fictitious university, the University of Uriarra.  The focus for this week is on the application systems portfolio for the University of Uriarra – see the case study documents in attached file.

The case study identified 9 major applications (pages 4 and 5) and you need to consider these from an application portfolio management perspective and suggest a future trajectory for each of these applications.

The week 4 lecture material provides a number of ways of assessing current and future applications.  (I have attached).

In this tute we will focus mostly on the approach described in an article by Michel Van Aerle (http://www.cs.uu.nl/wiki/MethodEngineering/ProductPortfolioAssessment) The origins of this approach are a little unclear however the Meta Group (now absorbed into Gartner) used a “business value/technical condition” matrix similar to this, and Sward also described an IT Business Value approach in an Intel publications.  Some details of this approach are also included in the lecture notes for week 4.

Make an assessment of each of the 9 applications using as much of this approach as you can.  Note that you may need to make some assumptions about both the applications and the approach you use in order to make an assessment of the applications – don’t worry too much about this and do the best you can, as some of the value in this exercise is in having a discussion about the underpinning rationale for the application assessments.

You will need to draw a matrix of the application business value (BV) mapped against technical quality (TQ) and then position each application on the matrix.  For each system, you should provide a brief justification for its position in the matrix.

Using this information, you should then decide which systems (if any) are candidates for redevelopment (and their priority), which systems (if any) should be abandoned, and the priority between the remaining systems for maintenance activity.

Your submission should also provide some thoughts on the limitations in using such an approach.  Are there other factors you think might be helpful in deciding the fate of the systems, or their priority for re-development/maintenance?

Biomedical Engineering

Asindicated in the BME 417 course philosophy and conduct handout and re-iterated in our first, ‘in-house’, group capstone session, in order to realize the full potential ofBME capstone design as a ‘transforming experience’ from BME student to a budding professional biomedical engineer, you are expected to apply your utmost due diligence at all times toward meeting, if not exceeding, the objectives of BME capstone design. Initial steps recommended toward achieving this end goal is to read the required text materials and/or related reading materials called out for in the design tasks (DTs), as well as, reading the DT at hand (DT#2) in its entirety before embarking upon the design task. You areasked to confirm that these steps were taken in yourcompleted DT work product handed in. Note that DT#2 is an independent effort and the author should explicitly indicate that this was the case.If there are any questions regarding this expectation, please direct them directly to BME capstone upper management, i.e

RationaleAs aspiring bioengineering medical device product designers and developers, it is important to continue building upon your newly expanded knowledge base of the global medical device industry that you are beginning to obtain from selected resources utilized in DT#1.At this early stage of identifying BME capstone design projects, it is important to first understand the generic characteristics of successful product development that can then be extrapolated to specific attributes leading to the successful development of medical device products. For the former, you are asked to first read Chapter 1 of Ulrich and Eppinger’s(U&E) text on Product Design and Development. For the latter, this includesbeing well versed in identifying product opportunities and their translation to the various product segments of the Biomedical & Biotechnology Health Care Industries where we will initiate in this design task (DT#2).

In doing so, it should become apparent to you, from the industry metrics and demographicsthat you are asked to assemble, that there existsignificant diversity of expertise and medical device product areas in the Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry (MDDI). As such, this thenoffers significant product development opportunities within the aggregate Medical Device & Diagnostic Industriesin the US and Worldwide. Altogether, this information, if well researched and analyzed, should better assist you in the design of medical device productsstarting with your fledging BME capstone project. For example, such a resource can help you to more efficiently conduct external searches to help you identify product opportunities that can potentially meet unmet needs, as well as, ‘benchmark’ existing medical device products that are designed and manufactured to meet the needs of biomedical/biotechnological health care product market segments, i.e., clinical therapeutics, diagnostics, and related applications, amongst many other beneficial outcomes.  As such, this task can serve you well if it is done with ‘due diligence’. This will, however, require much effort … so please do not delay in getting this tasks started!

DT#2 ChargeIn order to help define this continuously evolving and expandingbioindustry ‘landscape’, your design task at hand is to prepare a technical report that succinctly provides both the breadth and depth, i.e., the ‘big picture’, of the medical device and diagnostic industry (MD&DI), as well as, an objective, fact-finding, assessment of the current state of product development affairs of the MD&DI. Note that the more recent and emerging MD&DI products and associated product segments may be so-called ‘combinations’ of drugs, biologics and devices. These so-called ‘combination products’ clearly fall within the scope of the MD&DI and, thus, under the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) regulatory purview. Thus, it is important to also include those MD&DI companies that produce combination products, but not biotechnology companies, per se that fall outside of the MD&DI (e.g., biotechnology companies producing genetic engineered foods).

More specifically, you are requested to utilize the appropriate information technology (IT)-based resource information that will help you construct a ‘profile’ of the MD&DI including its health-related Biotechnology Industries in the US and at least one other country in the world. For the US and other countries around the globe, a potentially more efficient way to accomplish this aim is to first construct a comprehensive list of relevant industry metrics that best summarize registered medical device companies. Examples of relevant industry-related metrics that are important to consider (but not limited to) include their size (no. of establishments), location (geographic locations/regional distribution), employment figures (number of people involved, salaries for various levels of BME professionals, e.g., entry level, ‘x’ years of experience, etc), employment trends (current and projected new job areas), medical device product types and market ‘value’ (e.g., value of shipments, distribution of sales, etc), international trade (imports and exports), how they are commercially classified (e.g., NAICS), other pertinent medical device product metrics (trends in marketing, trends in distribution, etc), and any other relevant information that would be useful in creating a comprehensive MD&DI profile. Once your profile is completed, please write a short brief’ on the state of the medical device industry in the US and the world, i.e., current and future economic health, impact on health care and its delivery, e.g., affordable care act, etc, career opportunities, growth in entrepreneurship (for profit and social benefit, i.e., social entrepreneurship), among other factors you deem relevant, Please defer to the file located on the BME 417 Capstone Design I blackboard website under Design Task #2 assignment entitled ‘Industry Resources’. This file contains a number of useful industry references that can assist you in creating the MD&DI profile requested.  Supplementary resources are the following articles: (i) Medical Devices and Disruptive technology: Boston Scientific; (ii) Entrepreneurship by Russell S. Sobel.

Please provide a summary table of the MDDI metrics requested above. In addition, you are requested to identify a specific entrepreneurial medical device company relevant to your BME area of emphasis and that is developing a disruptive technology either for profit or nonprofit, i.e., ‘socially entrepreneurial’. Once you have identified a medical device company (hopefully of interest to you) that is related to your area of emphasis and is working on a disruptive technology, you are then requested to create a succinct profile of that company. The company profile should what key enterprise/organizational factors that promotes theirunique innovative and entrepreneurial culture that promotes their development of disruptive technology, as well as, their size, location, product line(s), their relevant bioindustry segment(s), parent organization (if applicable), specific medical device design activities, potential career opportunities in this MDDI/biotechnology segment, and other pertinent information that you deem relevant based upon the results of your broad industry profile. In order to assist you in completing this part of the design task, please refer to the file entitled, ‘How to Research a Company’.  There are also articles published in various trade magazines among other sources, e.g. MMDI, of the top 50 or so Medical Device Companies to Watch’thatcan serve as a good resource that list ‘up and coming’, as well as, very well established and very successful companies of all sizes that represent very diverse health care technologies.

In order to assist you, our longstanding Noble Science and Engineering Librarians Linda Shackle and Sheila Young) along with business librarian colleagues at Hayden Library, have over the years put together a rich compilation of information resources to assist you on researching a specific company, as well as an entire industry, such as, the MDDI. In this regard, Linda and her library colleagues have created an Assignment Help page with a sub-page for ‘BME 417 Researching Company and Industry Profiles’. Here you can follow the link to the ‘Bioengineering LibGuide’ [http://libguides.asu.edu/content.php?pid=11750&sid=78788] that contains number of resources relevant to this design task, including a direct link to a so-called ‘Company and Industry Profiles’ research page.

When you access this site, you will see that it has two flow charts with links to lists of resources used at a specific stage in the research process. In the third box, there is a list of resources by type – these are the same as what is linked in the flow chart but just grouped by type (such as company financial data or industry market studies) rather than order of use. The path is to click on LibGuides from the home page and the search Bioengineering, then the tab “Assignment help” and then BME 417 Company and Industry Profiles.

When you have completed your research and have created your technical report that provides the salient MDDI profile features requested, you are also asked to create a one page summary sheet, e.g., a table that succinctly summarizes the metric requested that should be placed at the front of the report just after your LoT. Please include the effort expended, i.e., how many hours, to complete DT#2.

Note also to use the MLA Format for referencing (see guideline posted on class website). Also, provide a record of your effort expended for this design task. Please refer to the DT#2 assessment criteria provided herein to help guide you to MDDI information pertinent to this design tasks.

In summary, DT#2 is comprised of essentiallythree main subtasks for this assignment, i.e., (a)US MDDI Industry Profile, (b) US MDDI Industry Profile Summary Table, and (c) Specific MDDI Industry Profile. Please provide headers for each of these subtasks.  Then, undereachsection header, delineate the various components that were called out in the DT.

hypothetical data

For this assignment, you should be interviewing a person who has expertise about a topic
you are interested in. Please note that you should be conducting the actual interview; you
should not be summarizing an interview conducted by someone else.
Part #1: Choose a Research Topic and an Interviewee
You do not need to submit this portion in writing, but you do need to accomplish this in
preparation for your research assignment.
In preparation for your research proposal letter in the next topic, you will need to choose a
topic for your proposal. This research proposal letter will be directed to an audience who can
create change (Congressperson, business administrator, or other similar audience.) In the
proposal, you need to suggest a change or a solution to a current problem. Examples of
strong proposal topics would be things like funding ideas for an animal shelter, starting a
recycling program in a community, suggesting a better plan for public transport, or another
idea that interests you. You will be proposing solutions for these issues. Choose a topic that
you are passionate about and for which you will be able to develop at least one solution.
While this information should be enough for you to choose a topic, please consult the
assignment sheet within Topic 7 if you have more questions about this assignment.
Once you choose a topic, it’s time to choose a credible expert to interview on that subject. In
other words, you should avoid choosing an interviewee who is a close friend or family
member unless that person truly is an expert in the field. This credible expert should have
10+ years of experience in his or her discipline. Choose an interviewee who not only could
offer some specific details about the problem but one who may also be able to offer
suggestions of a plausible solution. Use the information contained in the lesson presentation
to secure and conduct a successful interview.
Part #2: Summarize and Synthesize Your Interview
When you summarize and synthesize, you take the smaller pieces (the sections of the
interview) and develop them into one cohesive piece. Doing this exercise will help you
prepare for the research proposal letter, where you will need to incorporate at least a few
ideas from the interview.
To successfully summarize and synthesize, you might find it helpful to follow this sequence
for your essay:
Provide Background Information:
In your introductory paragraph, introduce your audience to your interviewee. What is his/her
name? What is his/her experience? If relevant, where is the interviewee employed?
Summarize the Interview:
While you want to avoid the all-too-predictable question and answer format, you should
provide information about what you learned from the interview. Take a look at your original
questions, group them into categories, and use those categories to build your body
paragraph(s). Also, you may note the interviewee’s reactions in your summary as well. Was
the interviewee nervous about answering a question? Did he/she seem knowledgeable in the
subject matter? Make this summary work for you by including whatever details and
responses you feel are important and will help you when you write the research proposal.
Synthesize the Interview:
In the conclusion, synthesize the interview. To synthesize just means you should consider all of
the information you gathered from this interview and draw conclusions. What did you learn from
the interview? How did the interviewee and/or the interview help you gain a deeper
understanding of your topic? Other findings?
No source citations are required for this assignment, but please review the rubric to get a
better idea of you you’ll be assessed.
The guidelines for this assignment are as follows:
Length: This assignment should be a minimum of 350 words.
Header: Include a header in the upper left-hand corner of your writing assignment with the
following information:
 Your first and last name
 Course Title (Composition II)
 Assignment name (Interview Summary)
 Current Date
Format:
 MLA-style source documentation and Works Cited1
 Your last name and page number in the upper-right corner of each page
 Double-spacing throughout
 Standard font (TimesNewRoman, Calibri)
 Title, centered after heading

1 This resource may be helpful as you are making MLA formatting decisions:
