Addressing Ethical and Cultural Competency Issues

Order instructions

As with any professional field, ethical and cultural competency issues can arise in human services. Sometimes ethical and cultural competence issues are not obvious and can be difficult to identify. Once human services administrators are aware of an issue, they must confront it immediately. Addressing these issues takes strategy, skill, and leadership. It is important for human services administrators to use the tools at their disposal, such as codes of ethics or supervision, to identify and address ethical and cultural competency issues. How a human services administrator addresses these issues might be influenced by his or her leadership style.

Post at least two examples of ethical or cultural issues that may occur in your area of human services. Then explain the tools you might use to identify and address ethical issues and issues related to cultural competence. Finally, explain how your leadership style might influence the tools you select to use.

cultural diversity in the US

Students will also be required to submit two short response papers (three pages long, double spaced, 12 font size) addressing readings assigned during one of the weeks.

The assignment must include a cover page.

The cover pages should have the following:

Your full name
Date
Full citation (ASA style)
About the author (discipline, department, specialization, contact information)
Research question(s) or thesis of the article, chapter.
Theory used in the article or chapter. What theory is the author building on?
Two or three quotes that you liked from the reading. No analysis needed.

In the three page response paper you are expected to do the following:

Briefly summarize/discuss the readings and describe your reactions/opinions toward the readings and topic. Papers should show evidence that you did all the readings (you should not just write about your own opinion based on your general knowledge of the topic or respond to only one or two specific things that the readings happen to mention). At the same time, good response papers should do more than merely summarize the readings.

During the first two weeks of class, please sign up online to write response papers for one class. It is your responsibility to sign up. Each response paper should be submitted through Safe Assignment on Blackboard before the class meets (for which you signed-up to write the response paper). Instructions on how to submit your assignment will be posted on Blackboard during week 2 under announcements.

Your response paper grade will be worth 15% of your grade, based on the total of the following four scores:

Cover Page (10 points)
Content: Is the student using and/or referencing material from the readings? (25 points).
Reaction: Is the student expressing a thoughtful response/opinion about the reading/topic? (20 points).
Organization and writing: Is the paper well-organized and written? (5 points).

Once response papers are graded, the grades will be posted on Grade Center (“My Grades”) on Blackboard.

Check Blackboard for the rubric we will use to grade your paper

Tour Operator Agency Database

Order instructions

Oracle Server may be used to test and compile the SQL Queries developed for this assignment.

A multinational tour operator agency has gained new business growth in the North American market through the use of social media. Its operation has expanded by 50% within six months and the agency requires an enhanced data management strategy to sustain their business operations. Their existing data repository for its reservation processing system is limited in business intelligence and reporting functionalities. The tour operator seeks a database management specialist to assist them in leveraging their data sources to enable them to forecast and project tour sales appropriately.

Imagine that you have been hired to fulfill their need of enhancing the data repository for their current reservation processing system. Upon reviewing the system, you find that the data structure holds redundant data and that this structure lacks normalization. The database has the following characteristics:

  • A table that stores all the salespersons. The table holds their employee id, first name, last name and “Tours sold” field. The “Tours sold” field is updated manually.
  • A table that stores tour customer data and tours sold. The table holds customer name, address, city, state, zip code, tour(s) selected, number of persons in tour, and total amount paid. The current structure will show the customer more than once, if the customer books multiple tours.
  • A tour table that is used as a tour rate sheet which holds the tours offered and the cost per person. Tour rates vary every three (3) months depending on the tourist season.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you propose an enhanced database management strategy. Your proposal should include the following:

  1. Design a data model that will conform to the following criteria:
  2. Propose an efficient data structure that may hold the tour operator’s data using a normalization process. Describe each step of the process that will enable you to have a 2nd Normal Form data structure.
  3. Create naming conventions for each entity and attributes.
  4. Conclude your data model design with an Entity Relationship Model (ERM) that will visually represent the relationships between the tables. You may make use of graphical tools with which you are familiar. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length.
  5. Construct a query that can be used on a report for determining how many days the customer’s invoice will require payment if total amount due is within 45 days. Provide a copy of your working code as part of the paper.
  6. Using the salesperson table described in the summary above, complete the following:

  • Construct a trigger that will increase the field that holds the total number of tours sold per salesperson by an increment of one (1).
  • Create a query that can produce results that show the quantity of customers each salesperson has sold tours to.
  1. Support the reasoning behind using stored procedures within the database as an optimization process for the database transactions.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
  • Include charts or diagrams created in any chart or drawing tool with which you are familiar. The completed diagrams / charts must be imported into the Word document before the paper is submitted.

Customers with Mental Illness

You are the senior member of a two-man hostage negotiation team for a maximum security facility in the Northeast. You and partner are called to a cell block where an inmate, identified as Alfredo Albondigas, has taken two facilities maintenance personnel and a fellow corrections officer hostage. He is claiming that there are aliens from another planet living in his cell block and demanding that they leave immediately. He has given an ultimatum that if he does not see the flying saucer leaving the exercise yard area in 2 hours, he will kill the maintenance personnel that he has taken hostage because he knows that they are giving signals to the aliens about him and the other inmates.

Mr. Albondigas is armed with a handmade knife and has his head wrapped in aluminum foil. The corrections entry reaction team (CERT) is working with you has a green light to kill Mr. Albondigas, but there are no current opportunities presenting themselves. You have managed to get a throw phone into Mr. Albondigas and you have direct phone communication with him. Also, because of the phone’s design, when he hangs up, you can still hear what is going on in the room. He has not hurt the maintenance personnel so far, but he is using the corrections officer as a translator to speak to the maintenance personnel, as if the maintenance personnel were not speaking English, but some alien tongue.

This scenario may seem humorous because it is fictional, but if it were real, it would be very serious for both the hostages and Mr. Albondigas. You are tasked by the warden and incident commander to make an operations plan centered on dealing with this mentally ill offender.

Address the following questions in a 10–12 page position paper. Present this paper as if it were an operations plan to negotiate with Mr. Albondigas and end the hostage standoff. You do not need to plan the tactical response if the negotiations fail. The paper presented should confine itself to gathering the information that negotiator needs, and the approach to take when negotiating with Mr. Albondigas to end the standoff.

  • Explain the mental state of the offender and the 2 most likely mental illnesses that are affecting him.
  • Explain what type of medical personnel you would like to have at the scene, and why?
  • Relate why you think that, if the deadline is reached without a solution, whether Mr. Albondigas will hurt the maintenance personnel or not. Explain your answer.
  • Articulate the persons whom you would like to have brought to the scene for interviews to help with information that you can use to talk to Mr. Albondigas.
  • Explain your approach as the negotiator when speaking with Mr. Albondigas, and why you would take that approach.

It is critical that, when you make a statement of fact in your presentation, you cite the reference that you used to obtain the information from. Do this in the text of the paper, and then include the reference in your References page. As always, your paper will be submitted in the current edition of APA format. No abstract is required because this is a short position paper, but a title page, reference page, and appropriate running header with page numbers are necessary.

For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources, and all course materials.

Pearl Harbor and Manzanar Internment camp

1. Read the excerpt from “Survivors Relive December 7, 1941”:

Bill Speer had just stepped out of his morning shower on the light cruiser USS Honolulu when the attack began. “I saw a torpedo drop and our guns were firing before they’d even sounded general quarters. I ran to my battle station and went through the rest of that day without getting fully dressed.” Speer tells of the deep sorrow they felt during those first terrible hours. “We could clearly see the Arizona and all of battleship row from our post. At one point we were all just standing there with tears in our eyes watching the devastation and feeling helpless, with nothing to be done about it.”

For many survivors, “doing something about it” meant getting back to their posts as quickly as possible, even if they were injured. Of the hundreds of men wounded in the attack, only 10 percent stayed in their hospital beds more than a day. The rest went almost immediately back to their duties. “That gives you an idea of our patriotism,” Speer said with a note of pride.

Courtesy of the National Park Service

Drawing on this excerpt, and the information you learned in the lesson about the Manzanar internment camp, draw two connections between the ideas in this excerpt and the lessons. Explain each of these connections using evidence from the excerpt and what you’ve learned in the lessons. Your response should be 3–4 paragraphs in length
