Media writing

MIDTERM EXAM
You are a reporter who has been assigned to cover a major disaster. This morning, a
passenger jet exploded in midair above Irvine Valley College. No further information is
available as you arrive near the scene of catastrophe, the intersection of Irvine Center Drive
and Valley Oak Drive. A police command post has been establishedthere. An Orange County
Sheriff’s press officer hands you and other reporters an information sheet. Here is what it says:
At about 11: 27 AM today, an American Airlines flight from Chicago bound for John Wayne
Airport sent a distress call from the cockpit to the airport control tower advising there was an
unspecified security emergency aboard. The tower crew had detected the flight was
significantlyoff-courseandatlowaltitude.
Witnesses on theground near Irvine Valley College reported seeinga large plane flying very
low, an estimated altitude of 3,000 feet. At about the same time, 11:29, several eyewitnesses
reported hearinga very loud explosionand instantly seeingthe planeconsumed infire.
Large amounts of burning debris descended, striking and killing at least 30 persons. Many
more might have been killed, but we have not been able to confirm that as now. Those
injured totals more than 60 thus far. Emergency crews from Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego
and Riverside counties are responding to this major disaster, by far the worst in Orange
County’s history.
Theareaaffected isthecampusand approximately 20surroundingblocks. We are searching
for others who may have been killed or injured. The college and many nearby homes and
businesses have sustained extensive damage.
We understand the plane had a total of 234 people aboard, including passengers and crew.
At this point we have no known survivors, though search and rescue efforts continue and are
expected toextend for many morehours.
The Federal AviationAdministration, the TransportationSafety Administration and the FBI
will be conducting their respective investigations of this disaster. We at the Orange County
Sheriff’sDepartmentwillcontinuetocoordinatesearchandrescueandgroundsecurity.
While the cause of this mishap is not our area of responsibility, we are gravely concerned that a
distress call from the cockpit was shortly followed by an explosion, suggesting a mechanical
failure was not involved. We ask that everyone stay clear of the affected area pending
further notification.
A few minutes later you are able to interview the following people. Feel free to usetheir
quotes:
Rosa Torres, an IVC student, age 20: “I was on my way to the library, when I heard this
horrible boom. The sky got all lit up, and I could see that a big jet was falling apart. All the
pieces were coming down on fire. I just ran and kept on running. People were screaming.
What happened?”
Ben Lee, 53, the owner of a dry cleaner’s shop on Jeffrey Road, about five blocks from
campus: “When I heard the loud explosion, I ran outside. I thought my place was going tocrash down. It was pretty scary what I saw—the plane tumbling down with fire coming out.
I’m thinking this musthavebeensomethingaterroristdid.”
Frank Jones, 78, a retired postal worker: “I was driving on Barranca Parkway when I noticed
this passenger jet coming down like it might be ready to land. Then, it went, boom! Right
then there was the huge fireball. I almost crashed because Iwassostartled and scared.”
You are standing at the intersection of Irvine Center Drive and Valley Oak Drive, and all
around you there are rescue crews rushing about. Police have restricted the press to this area,
but you can see black smoke is rising from the campus, which is about one-quarter mile
away.
Some 20 minutes have elapsed since you arrived, and now you receive a text message thatan
Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman will take questions. He arrives at the command post.
Sheriff’s Lt. Jose Ramos tells you and other reporters that he has been designatedspokesman
for the time being. What follows are questions and answers, designated with Q’s and A’s.
Q: Can you give us an update on the situation?
A: I don’t have any new information on dead and injured, but in general we are dealingwith
an extreme emergency. Our sense is that the number of casualties on the ground will rise in
the next few hours as emergency crews report back. The debris from the plane covered an
area of maybe 20 blocks.
Q: It seems very usual that a plane would explode in flight. Do you have any idea ofthe
cause?
A: That’s something federal authorities will look into, obviously. The NationalTransportation
Safety Board, the Transportation Safety Administration and FBI are en routehere.
Q: Why is the FBI coming?
A: Well, given the circumstances, every aspect must be explored. That includes thepossibility
that this catastrophe might have been the result of a terrorist act. Given the rise of terrorism,
even here at home, this is an aspect that authorities will look at very carefully.
Q: Do you have concrete evidence to suggest some terrorist or terrorist group was behindthis?
Has the black box been found?
A: No, I have nothing. But if you look at the fact that there was communication fromthe
cockpit regarding a security emergency, then you have to consider that possibility. I’m no
expert by any means, but the call was immediately followed by what eyewitnesses describeasan explosion, so the terrorism possibility seems hard to ignore. The black box, or flightrecorder,
has not been found. In fact, I don’t believe it’s even the object of a search. We have our hands
full saving people.
Q: What can you tell us about the passengers and crew?
A: At this point, we have not found any survivors. We do hold out hope that we willfind
survivors, but we also fear the worst. The plane was blown apart; it would be very difficultto
survive that. I don’t want to send out the message than no one has survived, just that the
prospects of surviving are not good.
Q: But, just to be clear, you are not confirming they are all dead.
A: No, I am not in a position to confirm the fate of all the
passengers. I can only speak to those we know to have died and
others who have been injured
Q: What’s the situation at IVC?
A: Sadly, several of the dead and wounded appear to be students. I don’t know thenumbers
yet. The campus has sustained a good deal of damage. Obviously it will be closed for the time
being and I would expect for many weeks.
Q: Have any airports been affected?
A: Yes, John Wayne is closed. All incoming flights are being redirected to LAX and othershave
been canceled before they could depart for Orange County.
Q: Has American made a passenger list available?
A: They will have one fairly soon. In a bit I will have the 800 number where folks cancall.
Thank you. I have to wrap up now. I’ll let you know when we have anotherbriefing.
Write a news story of between 550 and 580 words based on the information here. Your
lead should be specific. People have been killed and injured on the ground as the result ofan
airline disaster. While the fate of those aboard the plane is not officially known, there are
indications that it is likely they were unable to survive. Your story should reflect that in the first
few paragraphs.
You cannot reliably assert that the crash was an act of terrorism. At the same time, you
should note what Ramos has to say in this regard.
Be sure to use proper attribution and make clear what information comes from the prepared
statement and the question and answer session. Make use of some of the eyewitness accounts,
as they add color and variety.
While this week’s lecture was on broadcast journalism, you are to write this as a
news story for immediate online publication.

  1. Prepare a bill of materials for the table illustrated below (2.5 points)

  1. Solve the following problem and show all the steps of your calculation (2.5 points)

SAGCO produces glass containers that have target length of 100 cm with upper and lowers specification limits of 100.05 and 99.95cm respectively. Their existing process produces glass bottles with an average length of 99.97 cm and a standard deviation of 0.015cm. They are considering the purchase of a new machine that can hold a process output average exactly to target with standard deviation of 0.02. Which machine will provide a better capability index?

  • International Medical Center, Jeddah, is one of the busiest and most respected hospitals for the medical treatment of children and women in Jeddah

One of the tools the hospital uses consistently is the process flowchart. Omer Ali, who carries the “Clinical Practice Improvement Consultant,” charts scores of processes.

The flowcharts help study ways to improve the turnaround of a vacated room (especially important in a hospital that has operated at 130% of capacity for years), speed up the admission process, and deliver warm meals warm.

Lately, IMC has been examining the flow of maternity patients (and their paperwork) from the moment they enter the hospital until they are discharged, hopefully with their healthy baby a day or two later. The flow of maternity patients follows these steps (5 points):

  1. Enter IMC’s Labor & Delivery check-in desk entrance.

    2. If the baby is born en route or if birth is imminent, the mother and baby are taken by elevator and registered and admitted directly at bedside. They are then taken to a Labor & Delivery Triage room on the 8th floor for an exam. If there are no complications, the mother and baby go to step 6.

    3. If the baby is not yet born, the front desk asks if the mother is preregistered. (Most do preregister at the 28–30-week pregnancy mark). If she is not, she goes to the registration office on the first floor.

    4. The pregnant woman is taken to Labor & Delivery Triage on the 8th floor for assessment. If she is ready to deliver, she is taken to a Labor & Delivery (L&D) room on the 2nd floor until the baby is born. If she is not ready, she goes to step 5.

    5. Pregnant women not ready to deliver (i.e., no contractions or false alarm) are either sent home to return on a later date and reenter the system at that time, or if contractions are not yet close enough, they are sent to walk around the hospital grounds (to encourage progress) and then return to Labor & Delivery Triage at a prescribed time.

    6. When the baby is born, if there are no complications, after 2 hours the mother and baby are transferred to a “mother-baby care unit” room on floors 3, 4, or 5 for an average of 40–44 hours.

    7. If there are complications with the mother, she goes to an operating room and/or intensive care unit. From there, she goes back to a mother–baby care room upon stabilization — or is discharged at another time if not stabilized. Complications for the baby may result in a stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) before transfer to the baby nursery near the mother’s room. If the baby cannot be stabilized for discharge with the mother, the baby is discharged later.

    8. Mother and/or baby, when ready, are discharged and taken by wheelchair to the discharge exit for pickup to travel home.

Questions

  1. As Ali’s new assistant, you need to flowchart this process. Explain how the process might be improved once you have completed the chart.

    2. If a mother is scheduled for a Caesarean-section birth (i.e., the baby is removed from the womb surgically), how would this flowchart change?

    3. If all mothers were electronically (or manually) preregistered, how would the flowchart change? Redraw the chart to show your changes.

    4. Describe in detail a process that the hospital could analyze, besides the ones mentioned in this case.

(Note: You will get zero if you copy and past from any website).

Traffic at my university

Traffic

How many person face a traffic every day when their come to their classes? The traffic in the parking make the person nervous. Today I would like to tell you about the traffic in csun like staying for a while to park, because being late is a huge problem, student and professors are late for their classes and the people how live close from csun.
Staying for hours to find a place to park is a big problem in our society, especially searching in csun. Today the student who have a car staying for 45 minutes before the first class because there are 5000 student in csun including freshman that is not for who have car also who come by bike he did not have a place to park, also if they have a place mabee they will fined a place far from his class so they will walk for 15 minutes. That effect the student the will be late and the will have a low grade because they are missing the nots and they will not understand the subject, for example I was with may roommate going to our class and we stayed for one hour and also he buy a ticket for the all semester and that is not fair .
Then, the doctors are very important to be on time in class because the student need to learn from them. The doctors face a traffic when they are coming to class because their are new professors. I know that there are a parking just for doctors but it is less than the doctors
then doctors they will be late for their class that will effect the student because he will learn them fast because there is not enough time, student will not have enough information and learn good and they will misunderstanding the subject and they will not do good in the test.
For example that I have final test and the doctor was late 30 minutes. and the class just hour

and a half and the test was take hour and half and it was the last to days in the school.
third, there are some people are living close from csun and most of them are not student they have a job in a far places every day the have a problem when he want to go to there work because of the traffic in csun and there is no place to park the people are parking in close houses from csun, so they get annoying from this people who park in their parking and the will get late to go to there work for example my friend live close from csun and every day he nervous from the people who park in his house, in one day his roommate cut his finger well he was cooking and his finger was bloodying and my friend must take it now to the hospital put when he want to took hem by his car he sow tow cars were parking behind he’s car then he traded to called the umpulanc when they were coming the late for 15 minutes because its very crowded in the university area .
Fourth, the government and the companies and the public places they do not know what to do for the people the put a lot of places like a building with three or five floors and also a out parking to park and the people are coming more than more in the first two years the parking can fit all the cars but when the place are being fanous the people will increase and come because the people who were coming tell the other people to come.
Finally, I will talk about myself I tried to go by car on time with my roommate and we stayed 20 minutes waiting to fined a place to park. Everyday I come to my classes walking and my apartment is not far just walk 30 minutes and I get out before 40 minutes to be there befor the class of 10 minutes
In conclusion, student, teachers and the people who lived close from the camps have effect from the traffic by coming and goes from the camps late. Traffic is a serious problem in the school live .so we need to work hard to get ride from that problem by doing all the possible things like make more places to park, make a special parking for the students or if scun have another solution we hope to see this solution s soon as possible.

I did two papers essay in my english class and I want you to edit and revise and paraphrase it and also complete my ideas to be four pages, but please I want it simple words because I am international and no plagiarism.

Consulting- Question in the requirements section

‘Consulting should be what happens when someone with a problem or difficulty seeks help to solve that problem or difficulty from someone who has special

skill’ (Peter Cockman, Bill Evans, Peter Reynolds (1999). Consulting for Real People, London: McGraw-Hill, p. 4)

Discuss the nature of the client-consultant relationship in light of the above statement
