CRITICAL ANALYSIS

Critical Analysis Instructions

“You obviously have a solid understanding of the period after writing that first essay. If you’d like, you may use that as the foundation for a revised essay (based on the original assignment directions), this time focusing on a specific work of literature that defines certain characteristics of the period. You may email this revised essay by 7-15 for credit.”

In this literary analysis, you will write a 750–1,000-word essay in which you focus on features of style, topic, form, issue, or theme that distinguishes 1 work as either Neoclassical or Romantic.  Consider the specific ways that your chosen literary text reacts to or wrestles with 1 or more of these major social concerns. You may use the Bible, the primary text, and the introductory essays from your anthology: “The Restoration and the Eighteenth Century” (pp 931-960) or “The Romantic Period,” in your discussion. This essay must begin with an introduction that includes the subject of the work (title and author) as well as a thesis. The body of your essay must prove the value and logic of your thesis through examples from the text. This essay must present critical thinking and discovery, not simply known facts about a work. Do not give a plot summary; this is not a book report. The author(s) and work(s) must be selected from those we have read for this course. Important: Please do not conduct an author biography; assume that your reader(s) know about the author(s) of the work(s) you have selected for your literary analysis.

NOTE for this assignment:

  • Review the following information about thesis sentences: http://leo.stcloudstate.edu/acadwrite/thesistatement.html. A thesis statement must present an argument (proposition), not merely a statement of fact.
  • Adhere to academic writing standards, which include using 3rd person only, omitting contractions and jargon, and remaining in literary present tense.  For additional information on literary present tense, see http://vanderbilt.edu/writing/manage/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Literary%20present%20tense.pdf.
  • Include a targeted title that suggests the purpose stated in the thesis. The title should not be “Critical Analysis,” nor should it be simply the title of the primary text (the poem, play, essay, or fiction).
  • No outside research is allowed since the analysis must be your own work.  Including any source outside of the Bible, your anthology, or the primary text will result in a “0” for the assignment.
  • The essay must be double-spaced, written in Times New Roman 12-point font, and use 1” margins. In addition, format your paper using current MLA, APA, or Turabian format (whichever corresponds to your degree program).
  • You must document information from the literature through in-text citations and an end-text Works Cited/References/Bibliography page conforming to current MLA, APA, or Turabian format.
  • Do not use any material or words from sources without giving proper credit for that material or those words. To do otherwise is plagiarism and will result in a “0” on the paper or a possible “F” for the course. Your paper will be checked for plagiarism.
  • Review the Critical Analysis Grading Rubric to learn more about how the paper will be graded. Comply with all requirements.

Business Ethics – Paper Topics for Paper #1.

Business Ethics – Paper Topics for Paper #1.
1. Your paper should give an answer to ONE of the underlined group of questions.
2. The suggestions are just issues you might want to consider when answering the questions and points to help you consider the issues in the question.

You DO NOT need to address all of the “suggested issues to consider” in your paper.
3. The paper should present your understanding and opinions of arguments and materials covered in THIS class. First sources should be the material

assigned and are necessarily first sources. Second sources are not necessary and you will be graded not only on your understanding of the secondary

source, but also its relevance to the issue at hand. Second sources are not acceptable on their own.
4. Papers are to be 5 to 7 pages in length, typed or word processed, and double spaced. Number your pages!
5. All margins are to be 1 inch all around. All fonts used should be in 12-point type. Do not separate paragraphs with extra rows or returns. Microsoft

Word defaults to 1.5 spacing between paragraphs, or more. Please correct that in your paper. Do not repeat or retype the question at the beginning of

your paper. See the sample page attached for visual confirmation of the text format required.

1) Some have argued that the diversity of cultural values across different societies should tell us something about the nature of morality, namely that

the truth about moral principles and actions is “relative” in some sense. Is this view correct? Why?

2)What should Martin Field of RUN Inc. do? Why?
Suggested issues to consider: Which of the three theories we have studied best categorizes your approach to developing an answer to guide Martin’s

behavior? Why did you choose this approach? Anticipate and reply to any objections which you think are pertinent.

3)What should Stan Stark of Anzen-Motorola do? Why?
Suggested issues to consider: What bearing does Motorola’s commitment to their multi-national corporate values of safety for all employees have on this

situation? Do the local Nambunese mores or customs, like those regarding harmony and duty, play any special roll in your decision procedure? Which of

the three theories we have studied best characterizes your analysis? Anticipate and reply to any objections which you think are pertinent.

4)What are the strengths and weaknesses of using the following kinds of moral theories for application in business:
i)Virtue Theory
ii)Utilitarianism
iii)Deontology
Suggested issues to consider: Which do you think is the strongest? Which is the best choice for application to moral problems in business? How would

you tailor the theory for your needs in business ethical applications? What sort of rules, considerations, or virtues would be needed to make

deontology, utilitarianism, or virtue theory applicable to business ethics?

The next page will demonstrate the format for your answers regarding type face, margins, spacing etc.

This is sufficient indentation to begin your first paragraph. Notice as well that I started this paper 1 return from the top of page. Go ahead

and put all the relevant name, title, etc on a title page that is separate from the body of your paper. Now suppose I am done with this very short

paragraph.
See how I just hit enter /return, indented ½ an inch, and started typing again? There is no additional space between paragraphs. When the

writer places extra spacing between paragraphs this is meant to signal a change in the topic under discussion, or a topical break. Again, make sure you

check out the software you are using. I don’t care much about the font, but I do want the paper typed in 12 point scale. This font is Times New Roman,

but most anything will be accepted. And for goodness sake, please staple your answers together! One and only one staple is necessary if done correctly.

Staplers are fairly easy to operate. Do not make an elaborate origami sculpture out of your paper in the upper left hand corner just because you didn’t

bring a stapler. I will probably be nice enough to bring my stapler along.
Let’s assume I want to give an extended quote or list the premises of an argument:
“Whether a quote or a list of premises, notice how the page is double indented and starts over at the same point on the soft return. Also notice that

the type face is reduced, and this part of the paper is single spaced.

And here we are again back to normal. The purpose of all the above formatting at the quotation section is to reduce the size of the quotation to leave

you more room to expound on the meaning of the quotation. Your words are more important than the quotations.
And for love of all that is reasonable, please number your pages! Top of the page, bottom of the page, right, left or middle, I don’t care

where, but please do it.
Good Luck!

Music

Lesson 1 Questions:

1. The roots of rock and roll are clearly African-American in origin. Much of the indigenous music from West African cultures features musical

characteristics that are prevalent in rock and roll. Listen for some of the following musical characteristics in the recording of Ba-Benjelle

Pygmies from Central Sub-Saharan Africa. The variety of timbres present in many sub-Saharan African singing voices range from rounded, to guttural,

without vibrato, raw, and grainy. Buzzing sounds (buzzing timbres) are prevalent in many of the instruments used in the countries and culture groups

of sub-Saharan Africa.

Open the Music Characteristics To Listen For page and list any of the musical characteristics you happen to hear in this incredible Pygmy selection.

Beyond a mere listing of the characteristics, describe what you are hearing.

2. Listen, compare, and contrast the following two spirituals below. How are they different? What do they seem to have in common? List and describe

any musical characteristics you notice in these recordings.

Shout All Over God’s Heaven – The Fisk Jubilee Singers

Roll, Jordan Roll – The Fairfield Four

3. Click on the NPR (National Public Radio) video below to view, to listen, and to provide a music observational response to these two famous gospel

quartets who are actually related to each other – The McCrary Sisters, and The Fairfield Four. Are there instruments accompanying these singers or

is this performance “a cappella?” What patterns (rhythmic or song form structure) do you notice in this performance?

Rock My Soul – a spiritual song performed in a Gospel manner by The McCrary Sisters and The Fairfield Four (Links to an external site.)

4. Listen to the W.C. Handy composition St. Louis Blues as performed by The Empress of the Blues, Bessie Smith. On this recording of the Classic

Blues style, Bessie is accompanied by Louis Armstrong on Cornet and Fred Longshaw on the Reed Organ. Describe this music–what mood is being

conveyed here? As you listen, please list and describe any musical characteristics you recognize.

5. Compare and contrast St. Louis Blues from question #4 and Traveling Riverside Blues by Robert Johnson. How are they different? What do they seem

to have in common? List and describe characteristics you notice in the music. As you listen to Traveling Riverside Blues, performed by the great

Country or Delta Blues artist Robert Johnson, notice how Robert Johnson typifies the extremely personal approach of the Country/Delta Blues artist

as evidenced by his adding to (adding one extra beat), or deleting from (dropping one beat) the 4/4 time of each measure of music. He does not do

this to all the measures, but rather to just a selected few purely as a means of communicating his art. Maintaining strict 4/4 time coupled with the

twelve-bar harmonic progression of the blues is secondary to the personal expression of his voice and guitar. Additionally, because this music is

just Robert by himself on guitar and singing, he does not have to worry about keeping a stable 4/4 meter or a steady tempo as he would if he was

playing with other musicians in a band.

6. Urban Blues is a post World War II musical development. As African-Americans migrated north, the basic Country/Delta blues style mixed with the

jazz rhythm section of piano, bass, and drums. Additionally, the musicians “plugged in,” as amplification of the guitars, vocals, and the harmonica

became standard. Listen to the following examples of Urban Blues.

Describe the musical activity that you hear in each of the following Blues songs:

a) Baby How Long? – Howlin’ Wolf

b) I’m In The Mood – John Lee Hooker Notice how Hooker’s vocal timbre serves as a model for, and a direct influence on, Jimi Hendrix.

c) Hard Loser – Muddy Waters

d) When My Left Eye Jumps – Buddy Guy

e) Wake Up Old Lady – Lightnin’ Hopkins

f) Sweet Sixteen – B.B. King

7. List some of the characteristics of Blues music that have directly influenced and been co-opted into rock and roll.

8. What are the given name, brand name, and model of the specific electric guitar played by the late great urban blues artist B.B. King?

9. What instruments did Muddy Waters put together to form his Chicago-based Urban Blues band? What connection is there between this particular

instrumentation and rock and roll music?

10. Jimmie Rodgers (1897-1933) – composer, singer, and “white bluesman” performs three of his own compositions in this “short” for Columbia Pictures

Studio in 1929. Click below to view, listen, and describe:

“The Singing Brakeman” (1929) – a short film featuring Jimmie Rodgers singing “Waiting for a Train”, “Daddy and Home”, and “T for Texas” (Links to

an external site.)

Beginning in the 1920’s with Jimmie Rodgers’ mix of yodeling, folk, blues, and “hillbilly” country; on into the 1930’s with singer, songwriter,

fiddler, band leader, publisher and Grand Ole Opry icon Roy Acuff; Country Music started to shift from small ensembles of instruments (string bands)

and/or singers such as The Carter Family, to that of the “solo singer-with-band” set up. This resulted in the post-World War II “honky-tonk” style

featuring one of the greatest country performers and composers of all time-Hank Williams (1923-1953).

As Billie Holiday did so eloquently in Jazz, Hank also had the ability to communicate his art in a most personal manner. Both of these musical

giants transcended the norm by singing with just the right balance of emotion and intensity, delivering it, as if each song were being sung just for

you.

11. Describe the musical activity in each of the following selections recorded and composed by the great Hank Williams:

a) Why Don’t You Love Me

b) I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry

c) Your Cheatin’ Heart

d) Move It On Over

Hank Williams’ songs have been covered by numerous artists representing many styles of music. He is, therefore, another major influence in the

development of rock and roll.

12. Prior to labeling it Rhythm and Blues (R&B) in 1949 by Billboard, what was the categorical name used by the music industry for music recorded by

African-American (Black) artists?

13. The tremendous significance of rhythm and blues vocalist Big Joe Turner toward the development of rock and roll is indisputable. Listen to and

describe what you are hearing in his 1954 rhythm and blues recording of Shake, Rattle and Roll.

14. What early rock and roll musician stated, “I felt that if I could take, say, a dixieland tune and drop the first & third beats, and accentuate

the second and fourth, and add a beat that the listeners could clap to as well as dance, this could be what they were after”?

15. Bill Haley’s musical style featured watered down rhythm and blues lyrics, country and western instrumental playing, and a stage routine designed

to “grab” his audience. His “meteoric rise” to popularity, and hits like “Rock Around The Clock” all pointed toward a long career in rock and roll.

Yet, as fast as his ascendancy was, “there were no more American hits after 1956.” Provide reasons why this happened to Bill Haley. As you write

your response, listen to his recording of the song See You Later, Alligator.

Coming from the same musical lineage as Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Memphis Minnie before her, Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton (1926-1984) is yet

another example of how the Blues and the entire African-American experience is unquestionably fundamental to the art form we are studying in this

course.

Big Mama Thornton was the original artist to record (and claimed she was the composer of the song too) the classic tune called Hound Dog. A legal

battle began, and the court sided with composers Lieber and Stoller, thereby keeping Big Mama Thornton from ever receiving any of the sizable

royalties the song has accrued through numerous cover versions since her original version was recorded in 1952.

16. Listen, compare, and contrast these two versions of the song Hound Dog. Which version do you prefer and why?

a) Hound Dog – Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton

b) Hound Dog – Elvis Presley

17. Elvis Presley from “hillbilly ignorance to celebrity,” was a most complex human being. List some of the influences (musical and non-musical)

that directly shaped and contributed to his performance characteristics. For example: What effect did African-American gospel revival meetings have

on the music and performance style of Elvis Presley?

18. After writing about what influenced Elvis, now list and comment on the product of those influences–Elvis Presley’s own performance

characteristics which established the “Elvis sound.” Describe the musical activity you hear in each of the following selections by “The King” Elvis

Presley:

a) (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear

b) I Want You, I Need You, I Love You

c) Heartbreak Hotel

d) All Shook Up

19. What are the primary differences between Elvis Presley’s Sun Record Label Recordings, and his subsequent recordings for RCA?

20. Describe the political and social climate in the United States during the 1950’s. Additionally, list some of the prevailing social attitudes

among middle-class white adults during the 1950’s. How did these “attitudes” effect their response to the sudden presence of rock and roll music in

popular culture?

21. Name the “big three” Major Record companies who controlled the prevailing pop music industry in the early 1950’s.

22. What are/were “indies” “Independent Record Companies? List three of these Indie Record companies that were active in the late 1940’s through the

1950’s. What impact did these indies have on the recording industry and rock and roll music in general?

Paper #2: Comparative Analysis Essay

Write a paper in which you engage in a close textual analysis of two literary (or visual) texts, with the purpose of demonstrating how they address

a particular theme covered in our class readings and discussions about today’s society.

While you may employ comparison-and-contrast techniques, comparing the two texts should not be a goal in itself; therefore, your paper should not

become a simple list of similarities and differences between the two texts. Keep in mind that you are still required to write an argumentative

paper, with a clear thesis statement and supporting ideas. Your thesis statement should answer the following question: What messages or ideas about

individuals and their role in society do the texts convey and what specific means each text uses to convey those messages?

This paper is not asking for a review of your chosen texts (i.e. whether you like them or not). Instead, stay focused on the analysis in terms of

the messages they send about your topic. Beyond the introductory paragraph, do not spend time simply summarizing the literary (or visual) texts

you’ve chosen. Focus instead on making a clear set of points regarding the messages about individual and society being sent within your chosen

texts.

For your Comparative Essay, you may choose to compare one of the texts we analyzed in class to a new text on a similar issue, or two new texts

dealing with issues similar to those discussed in class. Here is the list of topics from which you need to choose ONE to develop into a Comparative

Paper:

1. How do Sophocles’ play “Antigone” and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” address the issue of civil disobedience? How does

the gender/race of the disobeying individual impact the meaning of the texts?

2. Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” alludes to the negative impact unquestioned or unchallenged dogma may have on an individual’s life

(and death) in a community. Read Salman Rushdie’s 1993 essay “Imagine There’s No Heaven” and compare this author’s view of organized religion and

its effect on society to that implied in Jackson’s text.

3. The two plays by Susan Glaspell and Lynn Nottage, “Trifles” and “POOF!” respectively, focus on the issue of gender inequality in marriage. How do

the two playwrights portray the female characters in relation to their male counterparts? Considering the plot similarities, could “POOF!” be

considered a revisionist version (or a rewriting) of the 1916 “Trifles” from a contemporary (African-American) perspective?

4. How does Angela Carter’s story “The Company of Wolves” address the subject of sexual awakening implied in the “Little Red Ridding Hood” fairy

tale? What are some of the subtle points in Charles Perrault and/or the Grimm Brothers’ version the contemporary author uses to expand on the theme

of sexuality? As an alternative, you may also discuss Bernard Capes’ 19th-century story “The Thing in the Forest” (and its emphasis on the religious

perspective) in connection to any or all other versions.

5. The 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, an adaptation of Charles Perrault’s fairly tale “The Beauty Sleeping in the Wood” (and the Brothers Grimm

later version titled “Little Briar Rose”), fleshes out the conventional antagonist in the original, the evil fairy, by creating the iconic “queen-

of-all-evil” image and aptly naming the character Maleficent. The 2014 live-action movie Maleficent provides a revisionist version of the fairy tale

by focusing on the backstory of the evil character. How does the 21st-century approach to the original story change your understanding of the

characters and their motives? Does the contemporary perception of gender roles influence the new version of the plot and character

interaction/relations?

Please note that all literary works listed above are available to read either in your textbook, Arguing about Literature, or online (just click on

the title to follow the link). Also, DVD copies of the two film titles are available at the Broward College Library.

Before beginning to work on this assignment, read the chapter titled “Strategies for Writing a Comparative Paper” in Arguing about Literature (pages

112-120) and all course lessons in Learning Unit #2. To help you get started in your analysis, look for details within the plot, the portrayal of

characters, dialogue, sound and visual cues, and/or even framing preferences that might send messages about gender.

For this assignment, YOU MAY NOT DO ANY ADDITIONAL RESEARCH beyond reading the assigned literary works (or watching the assigned movies) and

studying the theoretical chapters in Arguing about Literature. You must develop your paper based on your own ideas and observations (informed by the

readings and class discussions) and the assigned essays in this learning unit to support your comparative analysis. Therefore, you should choose

those texts about which you feel you can develop an intelligent ana

Discussion Question 4- pertains to language use

Discuss the characteristics of the language style you will use in the profession for which you are being educated. What are examples of the

jargon used by members of your future profession? Consider the registers you use in the groups with which you are affiliated. What are some of

the distinguishing characteristics of each of these registers?

Case Study: Measles in Texarkana

Case Study: Measles in Texarkana
Read the following case study and answer all questions below in a Word document. You must submit your paper in proper APA format (see attached example –

note – an abstract is not required).
The following case study was taken from the CDC-EIS.
On Tuesday, November 3, 1970, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta received the weekly telegram of surveillance data from the Texas State Health

Department. The telegram reported 319 cases of measles in the state during the previous week. In contrast, Texas had reported an average of 26 cases per

week during the previous four weeks. In follow-up telephone calls, CDC learned from State health officials that 295 cases of measles had been diagnosed in

the city of Texarkana, including 25 in children reported to have been previously immunized.
An invitation to investigate the situation was extended to the CDC on November 4, 1970. An EIS officer departed for Texarkana early on November 5.
Background
Texarkana is a city of roughly 50,000 that straddles the Texas-Arkansas state line. Texarkana, Texas (Bowie County), had a population of 29,393 in the 1960

census; the population had been stable during the 1960s. Texarkana, Arkansas (Miller County), had a 1960 population of 21,088.
Although Texarkana is divided by the state line, it is a single town economically and socially. Persons of all ages on both sides of town have frequent

contact. Churches, physicians, offices, movie theatres, and stores draw people from both the Arkansas and Texas sides of town. People cross the state line

to attend social functions such as football games and school dances. Many families have friends and relatives who visit back and forth on both sides of

town. Private nurseries and kindergartens receive children from both sides of town. The two sides of Texarkana, however, do have separate public school

systems and separate public health departments.
The Investigation
The investigators obtained names of cases from the health departments, physicians, school and nursery records. They conducted a door-to-door survey. They

also asked families of cases for names of other cases. They used the same methods of case-finding and epidemiologic investigation on both the Arkansas and

Texas sides of town.
Clinical Picture
The illness was clinically compatible with measles. Typically, the patients had a 4- to 5-day prodrome with high fever, coryza (runny nose), cough, and

conjunctivitis (red, irritated eyes) followed by the appearance of a bright maculopapular (red spots and areas) rash. The temperature usually returned to

normal 2 to 3 days after appearance of the rash, while the rash persisted for 5 to 7 days.
The Outbreak
Between June 1970 and January 1971, 633 cases of measles were reported from Texarkana. Dates of onset were accurately determined for 535 cases. Though

infants, adolescents, and adults were involved in the epidemic, the majority of cases occurred in children 1 to 9 years of age. Measles cases were not

evenly distributed within the two counties.
Measles in Previously Vaccinated Children
Before this outbreak, the proportion of children vaccinated against measles on the Arkansas side was substantially higher than the proportion vaccinated on

the Texas side. The Texas side had never had a community or school vaccination campaign for measles. In contrast, the Arkansas side had held mass community

programs against measles for school and pre-school children in 1968 and 1969.
Based on health department and physician records, investigators estimated that over 99% of children aged 1-9 years in Miller County, Arkansas had received

measles vaccine prior to the outbreak. The overall vaccination level in Bowie County, Texas, was estimated to be 57%.
In this outbreak, 27 of the measles cases in Bowie County and all 25 of the measles cases in Miller County gave a history of prior vaccination with live

attenuated measles-virus vaccine. Parental history of vaccination was corroborated for all the cases by clinic or physician records. Local health

authorities in both counties were very concerned that children who had previously received measles vaccine got the disease.
In previously vaccinated children aged 1-9 years in Bowie County, the measles attack rate in this outbreak was 4.2 per 1000; the comparable rate in

unvaccinated children was 96.9 per 1000. From these data, a vaccine efficacy of 95.7 percent was calculated. This is a minimum figure since it has been

assumed that all 27 children were correctly vaccinated and that all of the cases therefore represent vaccine failure.
In actuality. some of these patients did not receive vaccine under ideal conditions. Eight of the 27 previously vaccinated patients had been vaccinated by

nurses from the Texarkana/Bowie County Health Unit at a day nursery. The vaccine for these eight children had been carried back and forth to the nursery

from the Health Unit in a cooler in a car on three separate days in June and July 1970. Although a lapse in technique which allowed warming of the vaccine

cannot be documented here, it is a possible explanation.
An additional seven patients had been vaccinated under the age of 1 year. These children were vaccinated in the years 1963-67 when it was recommended that

measles vaccine be given at age 9 months. It has since been learned that a vaccine failure rate as high as 15% may accompany vaccination at 9 months in the

United States.

Answer the following questions (use appropriate APA headings instead of repeating the questions):
1. What would be the initial steps of your investigation into this outbreak, i.e., the steps before trying to find additional cases?
2. How might you look for additional cases?
3. How would you define a case for this investigation? Is it a sensitive, specific, or both case definition? Why would you use this type of case

definition (i.e. sensitive, specific, both)?
4. What interventions would you propose to stop the spread of infection?
5. What is the current recommendation by the CDC for measles vaccination in children in the U.S.? What is the current WHO recommendation for children in

developing countries? Discuss why there are differences and how this is relevant to the case study.
Please ensure you cite your references in APA format with a minimum of 3 references (You may use your textbook as a reference and you should have a minimum

of 3 academic outside references). Assignment will be graded based on the following areas: Foundation and synthesis of knowledge, application of knowledge

critical thinking, writing skills, and organization of ideas and format.
