Essay 1: Narrative Argument about Your Education
The Importance of Arguments:
One skill set you will focus on in Writing 101 is how to persuade an audience for your purpose.
Understanding effective strategies of argument can come in handy when you want to persuade your boss
that you deserve a raise or persuade your coworkers that a specific way to do something is better. The
first essay assignment in Writing 101 requires you to practice persuasion by writing an argument using a
narrative — a story — to convince your readers your thesis (the point you are making) is valid, true.
The Importance of Narratives
In Essay 1, you will use a story about an educational experience you had as evidence to support your
argument about that experience. People judge the strength of an argument by the evidence you include
that supports your thesis. Readers need to make sense of an event or events within a context. The context
a story gives us the sense-making perspectives we need. Use your narrative or story to convince your
audience that your point – your thesis — is reasonable given the situation.
Assignment
Education refers to all of the ways we formally and informally learn. Formal education includes
everything learned in school. Informal education includes everything learned outside of a structured
setting, either from family, friends, coaches, mentors, etc., or that you have taught yourself.
Thinking about what you learned in the past can help you get the most out of new experiences. The more
you know about yourself, the more success you are likely to have.
For this essay, you will write a narrative argument about your education.
We will read and analyze published essays that are similar to this assignment. You will be
able to see how other writers have narrated their own educational experiences.
In your essay, you must develop an arguable claim using a personal narrative (a story).
For your narrative to be successful as an argument, your point must be clear.
What do you want your readers to “get” – to understand — from your story?

 

Write about a time when you learned something new, either inside or outside of a
school setting. How did you learn? Make an argument about your learning style based
on your experience learning something new.

 

Your readers are your classmates and instructor. You need to provide enough information in
your narrative for your audience to understand where, when, and, how the experience took place,
and also provide enough detail and analysis for us to care about your experience.
Provide Concrete, Vivid Detail
To write a successful narrative, include plenty of vivid, relevant detail. Your goal should be to
make your readers feel as if they were there with you during the experience. Everything you
include must support your argument.
Everything must count.
Include Figurative Language
One way to make a narrative effective is to include figurative language such as metaphors,
similes, personification, etc.
Here is an example of literal language: “The house had three floors and seven bedrooms.”
Here is an example of figurative language: “The seven-bedroom house loomed over Mulberry
Street like a dark god, casting judgment on its neighbors.”
Use Strong Verbs
Notice the difference in the previous example between the verbs “had” and “loomed.” “Loomed”
is much more specific and descriptive.
Use Dialogue (optional)
Including what people said can help readers better understand your experience and your point.
Make Sure Your Story Makes a Point
Have an answer to the reader’s question “So what?”
What central idea or thesis do you want to convince readers is reasonable, true, and insightful.

Your essay must be more than three pages long. Be sure your essay goes on to page four, typed

 Include a title that gets attention and identified the topic or hints at the thesis
 Explain the significance of your story (have a strong thesis)
 Tell a story with specific details and clear examples that support your thesis

 Be organized into a logical series of paragraphs

You will research a business process or business operations topic and prepare a report for an executive audience. Components of the process for

You attach one Word document containing a well-written formal report using the description under the Structure header, which matches the Formal

Structure

Cover Sheet: Provide a title, Prepared for… (Name the audience), Prepared by… (Name project team members), and Date.

Table of Contents & List of Figures (Use Table of Content feature in Word; if you don’t, five points will be deducted). Follow these directions

in Word: go to File and click on Help; click on “Getting Started” and a webpage will pop up; in the search area in the upper right corner, type

in “table of content”; the top title on this page reads, “Create a table of contents or update a table of contents”; click on the link and

scroll down to read a header in red print – “Create a table of contents automatically”. You need to use this feature or points will be

deducted.

Executive Summary – high-level overview of the report, including a brief summary statement and an ending one-sentence paragraph of your

recommendation.

First page of the report and remainder of the body of the report (6-7 pages for this section specifically, including two-three graphics [table,

chart, figure, etc.] of 1/3 to 1/4 page size). To keep the formatting of the report easy, use one-inch margins all around. When using direct

quotes, insert no more than two direct quotes per page. End with strong conclusion summary and recommendation (Make sure you start the

recommendation with “I recommend….”, as you will do in the presentation).

Bibliography or references. Work with Dr. Blackburn on creating a strong list, ranging between 9-11 academic directed references. Using one or

two sources that only show a link can be used but if your reference list contains all secondary or tertiary sources, you will receive a point

deduction on the excessive use of non-academic sources. Also, if you use only search engine references, you will have a point reduction

depending on the extensiveness of the Internet only use that demonstrates no strong research articles and references. Have a strong list of

academically-oriented resources references.

 

Drawing Assignment: Picture Perfect Particles
All the observable changes you see when matter changes phase—the bubbles during boiling, the crystallization during freezing, and the “disappearing” of

matter during evaporation—can can be explained at the particle level. Use your understanding of kinetic molecular theory and phase changes to complete

the following drawing assignment.

In quantitative studies and quantitative studies, sampling refers to selecting a particular sample of individuals from a larger population. This process is often called participant selection. Qualitative research collects rich data from fewer sources, while quantitative research attempts to collect a larger, more representative sample from the population as a whole. Selection criteria for eligibility in a study is similar for both quantitative and qualitative studies, however, there are some differences with respect to the procedures used and the size of the samples.

State the factors you would consider in choosing participants for a study. In particular, how would you go about deciding how many participants to interview given a particular methodology? In addition, write about how you will select your participants for a possible study you are writing a proposal for in this course. How many participants do you think you need (support your answer)? Overview
The second part of the final project for this course is the creation of a memorandum.
Legal situations arise frequently in everyday business practice, but the assessment of the key issues is not always clear. A working understanding of essential business law concepts is critical for the successful navigation of complex and diverse business environments. Successfully addressing real-world situations will sharpen your skills in spotting issues, identifying vulnerabilities that you may face as a member of the corporate world, and becoming more sensitive to legal dilemmas that commonly arise in business.
For Final Project Part II, you will prepare a five-page professional memorandum for your supervisor in a hypothetical U.S. corporation that is considering doing business overseas. Your findings and critical assessment of the cases will help shape the approach of corporate stakeholders to the legal matters raised, including each company’s response to each situation.
Prompt
You will assume the role of an employee at a fictional company and prepare an executive memo pertaining to the legal and ethical implications of a company doing business internationally.
Scenario
You are working for a major U.S. corporation that wants to expand its reach globally and has narrowed the search to either Mexico or Japan. Your supervisor has asked you to prepare a memo that analyzes potential compliance issues with respect to aspects of law and ethics that are specific to one of the two countries.
You will choose to prepare your memo for either Mexico or Japan and address the critical elements below. This will help inform the final executive decision.
Memo Criteria
Because you have some fluency with domestic laws, and given your background and history with the corporation, you have been asked to assess the pros and cons of the decision, and to provide your insights with respect to the ethical and legal implications of the expansion.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. What pertinent aspects of U.S. law should the company be aware of in its goal to do business internationally?
II. Assess the legal implications of moving business abroad specific to your chosen country. What are the advantages and disadvantages?
III. What are the ethical implications involved in this business decision?
IV. Explain how other domestic companies have managed to comply with the U.S. laws related to this business decision in the past. How did thesecompanies address potential compliance issues?

Guidelines for Submission:
Your professional business memorandum should adhere to the following formatting requirements: 5 pages (not including title and reference pages), double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. You should use current APA style guidelines for your citations and reference list.
Generally speaking, the best memos include references to at least two cases for each point of law that is mentioned. Students also earn high marks when they cite cases that appear to support a different legal resolution than the one presented by the student, and then distinguishing that case from the scenario described in this assignment. Such distinctions demonstrate exemplary understanding of the course materials.

Read the entire file uploaded and write an essay about the mathematics, people, and historical context in it. Cite at least 2 more sources other than the uploaded file. Writer may use the citation from the references of the uploaded file.

 

Essay Question:
Imagine an undefeated high school football team on which the average lineman weighs 300 pounds. Also, imagine an 0–10 team on which the average lineman weighs 170 pounds. The undefeated team sets out to hit as hard as they can on every play and to run up the score as much as possible. Before the game is over, 11 players from the lesser team have been carried off the field with significant injuries. All injuries were the result of “clean hits”—none of the plays resulted in a penalty. Even late in the game, when the score is 70–0, the undefeated team continues to deliver devastating hits that are far beyond what would be required to tackle and block. The assumption of the risk doctrine exempts the undefeated team from liability. Is this reasonable?
