The origins of elements
The fusion of deuterium and tritium isotopes fuels the Sun. This reaction also explains the existence of helium in the Sun and other stars. But what

about the other elements? How did heavier elements, like oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, first form? Are they still forming today? If so, where and how?

To investigate these questions, you will journey into a star and carry out the two-part exploration outlined below. Click each tab to review the

Part 1: The Elements: Forged in Stars
Visit The Elements: Forged in Stars and use the background essay and 3-minute video to find the answers to the following questions:
How does a star glow?
What types of elements are found in stars?
What is a supernova?
Why does it take so much heat and pressure to create helium and other elements?

Part 2: Show What You Know
Perform a Web search using terms, such as “stellar nucleosynthesis,” “helium burning,” “carbon burning” and “neon burning,” to locate balanced equations

that show the fusion of lighter elements into heavier elements.
Write balanced nuclear equations for the formation of five elements whose atomic number is between helium (2) and iron (26).

Present your findings for your research for Part I and II in one of the following formats:
a web page that will be accessed by middle school students learning about stars
a slideshow presentation OR short video that will run at your local science museum in conjunction with an exhibition on the origins of the universe

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to help students understand strategic business terminology (vision, mission, goals, objectives, specific objectives, internal and external scanning), to recognize the components of a strategic plan and to be familiar with the core information and steps needed to create a strategic plan. Furthermore, this assignment allows students to recognize the difference between strategic planning and strategic management.

Assignment Steps

Write a 700-word analysis in which you complete the following:

Describe and define the primary components of the Strategic Management Process.
Describe and define internal and external analysis.
Describe and define the responsibilities and duties of the Strategic Manager.
Explain why companies need strategic management planning.
Cite 3 scholarly references, including at least two peer-reviewed references from the University Library.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

In the scenario listed below there are at least four alleged crimes and at least one possible civil action. Review the scenario and identify these crimes and civil action.

 In a 3 page paper (excluding title and reference pages), apply principles of criminal law to criminal justice practice.

 Show an understanding of the civil liabilities of criminal justice agencies and practitioners.

 Cite case law regarding the possible civil action that could be taken against the police officer, the department, and the city.

Scenario:

Police Officer Jones, in full uniform, was walking the midnight shift in a high-crime area at approximately 2:00 AM and is approached by a civilian who told Officer Jones she had been robbed and beaten by someone wearing a red shirt and white pants. The victim’s shirt was blood soaked from a severe laceration to her head and lip. She said the perpetrator was wearing a ski mask so she was unable to determine the gender/sex of the individual, as well as the race/ethnicity. However, she was able to inform Officer Jones that the perpetrator was approximately 5’8” tall and had a gun. The perpetrator stole her wallet and was holding it when he/she fled the scene, which was only a minute or two earlier. Officer Jones called for medical assistance and for backup as well.

While waiting with the victim for medical personnel to arrive, Officer Jones spotted an individual that partially fit the description about a block away from the scene. Though it was very dark, Officer Jones observed the white pants and dark shirt. Officer Jones walked toward the individual, leaving the victim unattended. Medical and backup had not arrived. When Officer Jones was approximately 20 feet away he identified himself as a police officer and told him in a loud, clear voice, “Stop, Police! However, the individual refused to comply with Officer Jones’s commands and continued to walk away from Officer Jones. Officer Jones again shouted. “Stop, Police,” and the individual stopped. As the individual stopped, he turned and faced Officer Jones, at which point saw a large bulge in the subject’s right front pocket. The subject, who was now approximately 7 feet from Officer Jones, refused to keep hands where Officer Jones could see them. The subject reached into his right front pocket and began to draw his hand out of his right front pocket. Officer Jones drew his weapon and fired at the individual, hitting him in the left shoulder.

The individual fell to the ground and Officer Jones approached him and called for additional medical personnel. Officer Jones located a baggie filled with smaller baggies each filled with what appeared to be Cocaine and a cell phone. The individual was taken to the hospital and was labeled as stable.

Detectives investigating the incident discovered that the person shot was not the perpetrator in the alleged strong-armed robbery. They also discovered that the victim lied and was actually involved in a domestic violence incident and did not want her husband to be arrested.

Examine 2 issues that confront public education today. In examining the issues, explain how you as a school administrator might respond

and how that response would connect to your vision of education, the ethical dimension of leadership and the broader social and political

context.

Write a four page paper (double-spaced) that makes a structured, multi-part critical argument which refers closely to one cyberpunk text.

In addition to four pages of writing, the paper should include a separate Works Cited page appended to the end of the document.
The paper should begin with a short introductory paragraph containing your thesis statement. That is, a statement of the argument you will

make in this paper. You should also indicate clearly in this first paragraph which question you are answering.
The paper should present evidence from the text in the form of quotations. Try to integrate these excerpts into the flow of your

discussion, rather than simply setting them on their own and then talking about them.
The paper should provide some analysis of what you think each quotation means, and explain how this reading supports your thesis argument.

At minimum, you should be expecting to present at least three pieces of evidence from the text.
This paper should conclude with a short paragraph that recaps the argument you have made in support of your thesis statement. A conclusion

might include observations that emerged in the course of your argument.
The paper should be submitted in 11 point Calibri or similar font, and formatted accorded to MLA guidelines, using MLA citation style and

with a Works Cited list on a separate page at the end of the document.

 

Assignments: (choose one)
” How is cyberpunk’s central tension around questions of the body reflected in either Neuromancer or Snow Crash? Make a critical argument,

using evidence from the text, that addresses the embodiment of two specific characters, in each case arguing for why the embodiment of that

character is of particular critical interest.

” How is narrative exposition handled in either Neuromancer or Snow Crash? Present at least three quotations showing exposition and provide

analysis that connects them to a critical argument about how the book delivers background information to the reader.

” How are representations of masculinity and femininity constructed in cyberpunk works? – Focus on one character from either Neuromancer or

Snow Crash. Form a strong and specific thesis about how that character’s gender is constructed in the novel, then give evidence and

argument to support your thesis. Although your argument should be centered on one specific character, you may also wish to discuss other

characters in the course of your paper, in terms of how the representation of their gender relates to that of the character you are focused

on.

” Make a critical argument about the representation of one of the following themes in Neuromancer or Snow Crash. Your argument should

include evidence and analysis, and argue for a specific critical reading of how the book explores this theme. Note: You must tie your

discussion to how the theme is explored in this particular text. You can discuss other relevant texts in relation to this theme if you wish

but keep it brief.

Mind, Body and Identity – what does it mean to be a person?
High Technology / Low Society – how has technological change affected people of different social groups? How does tech contribute to

alienation and marginalization, or to liberation?
Utopia and Dystopia – what might perfect worlds or perfectly awful worlds look like?
The Nature of Heroism – what makes a character a hero, or not?
Language and Memory – why is memory important? What is language’s role in memory?

” Hybridity – Focus on one character from either Neuromancer or Snow Crash. Form a strong and specific thesis about how that character is

constructed as a hybrid, then give evidence and argument to support it. You may wish to consider different kinds of hybridity in this

context but the main focus of your discussion should be on how this hybridity is constructed as the character’s social identity. That is,

how it impacts their relations with other characters.

” Power – Focus on one character from either Neuromancer or Snow Crash. Form a strong and specific thesis about this character’s relation

to issues of social and political power, then give evidence and argument to support it. You may wish to consider different kinds of social

and political power in this context and your evidence and argument should focus on analyzing instances where the character interacts with

the these structures of power in their world.

Research a major earthquake or volcanic eruption from recent history. Give a scientific explanation for the causes of the earthquake or eruption, and explain the impact it had on the surrounding environment and populations.

 

Application 1: Identifying a Doctoral Study for Evaluation

 

Throughout the 8 weeks of this course (in separate but interrelated assignments), you will describe and evaluate the data collection methods to ensure quality used in a selected qualitative doctoral study. To facilitate this evaluation, this week you will search for an appropriate doctoral study from the Walden online library or ProQuest. Follow the guidelines below to choose a study:

Use the ProQuest online database to search for a study.
Please be sure to choose a doctoral study that is focused on a business-related topic. The search terms “qualitative” and “business” find many options to explore, or search for sample study that is directly related to your emerging doctoral study research topic.
Do not choose a master’s thesis or an undergraduate study.
Choose a qualitative doctoral study, or a mixed-methods doctoral study with a substantial qualitative component that has data collections and data analysis sections. This study should be done within five years. If you are uncertain if your selected doctoral study meets these requirements, please discuss this with your Instructor. If you choose a mixed-method doctoral study, focus only on the qualitative components in the paper for this course.
Also, keep in mind that this doctoral study will be used as a basis for subsequent assignments in the next few weeks which you will describe and evaluate different sections of the sample study you choose.

The Crochetiere doctoral study listed in this week’s Learning Resources is an example of a qualitative research document similar to that required for you to find this week. If you are performing research specifically related to sustainability, you may petition the Instructor to potentially allow you to use this doctoral study for analysis purposes in this course.

Important note: During application assignments in Weeks 2, 3, 5, and 6, you will be reviewing and analyzing the doctoral study you identify this week.

For this Application:

Identify a study or ProQuest in the Walden library, and submit a full citation using correct APA style (6th ed.) for your chosen doctoral study, along with the study abstract in one word document.
Please save your chosen doctoral study as a pdf file and keep it for your own use.

Your paper should be at least 3-5 pages (not including cover page and reference list) and should clearly demonstrate the main ideas regarding emergency

planning that we have covered in the Comprehensive Planning Guide and Fundamentals of Emergency Management.

External research will generally be required in addition to the assigned readings. Please create your response in a Microsoft word document, following

APA guidelines, and upload as an attachment for submission. Pages are to be double-spaced utilizing Verdana 12 point font text. The page requirements

are exclusive of your reference list and cover page.
